Bases for shadows. Who are they and why are they needed?

Women's eyes fascinate and attract, so they should look perfect. This largely depends on correctly selected eye makeup, which can make them brighter and more expressive. This look can be created by applying decorative cosmetics, but in order for it to last well all day, you need a good eye shadow base.

What is an eye shadow base?

Eyeshadow base is a basic makeup component that must be applied to the skin of the eyelids before applying decorative cosmetics. It is usually a translucent substance with a liquid consistency.

The eyeshadow base is available in the following versions:

  • In liquid form;
  • In the form of a cream;
  • in the form of a gel.

It is this kind of makeup base that will add brightness to the shadows, will not allow them to roll off, the makeup will remain in its original form for the whole day, it will not have to be corrected or repainted.

Why do you need an eyeshadow base?

Eyeshadow foundation was invented not so long ago. Previously, many women calmly applied eye shadow directly to the skin of their eyelids, and they were quite happy with everything. Why is there suddenly a need to use such a basic framework? Maybe it's not needed at all?

Modern experts claim that ideal, beautiful and long-lasting makeup can only be achieved with a base eyelid coating.

Naturally, no one forbids applying decorative cosmetics to the eyelids without a base. If very high-quality shadows are used, the makeup will turn out bright, but not long-lasting. Especially in hot weather, even very high-quality expensive shadows will begin to roll, smudge or crumble.

If you use the basic framework, there will be no such problems. Moreover, the eyelid base makes it more convenient to apply shadows, since they will lie much smoother and look more expressive.

Eyelid foundations are not a skin care product, but they usually contain various moisturizers and nutrients that gently care for the delicate skin of the eyelid, protecting it from the pigments of decorative cosmetics.

Even using cheap shadows with an unknown composition will not harm the skin of the eyelids if a good base is first applied to it. Purchasing a high-quality eyeshadow foundation will allow you to save on the purchase of expensive decorative eye cosmetics, because even the most inexpensive shadows will look high-quality and bright thanks to the foundation.

What makes eyelid foundation unique?

Do not be mistaken that face makeup base and eye shadow base are the same product, just labeled differently. These are two completely different means. The skin on the eyelids is much thinner and more sensitive than on the face. It is much drier and subject to whiter aging faster, so eyelid foundation is made by manufacturers specifically taking into account these skin characteristics. Therefore, a high-quality, professional foundation for eyelids is responsible for solving the following tasks:

  1. Protect thin, sensitive eyelid skin;
  2. Smooth and nourish the skin;
  3. Simplify the application of decorative cosmetics;
  4. Ensure makeup lasts all day long;
  5. Remove excess shine.

For each skin type, you need to purchase the appropriate eyelid foundation. For dry skin, a cream base is most suitable. For those with oily skin, it is better to opt for a gel base with a water base. For other girls, a light liquid eyeshadow foundation is suitable.

Bases for shadows. Who are they and why are they needed?

“Brave eyes are a beauty to a young man”

As I learned relatively recently, I am notoriously known as a “basic maniac.”

That is, they say that I am very, very uneasy when it comes to makeup bases. Well, it’s stupid to deny - it’s true! Bases, or makeup foundations, are one of my favorite cosmetic products. Seeing a new base, I can’t resist the temptation to try it: what if this is a new love? I’ve already talked in some detail about what a makeup base is for, and there were a lot of reviews on the products I tested - but today I’ll talk about a very special “family” of bases, namely, eyeshadow bases.

These bases have quite specific tasks, and therefore differ significantly from bases for “full face” makeup. The main task of such bases is to ensure the durability of eye shadow.

What are our main problems with wearing eye shadow? If the skin of the eyelids is more or less oily, then the shadows fall on them unevenly, in spots, and are poorly distributed over the eyelid. And to top off the holiday, after a while they begin to “slip”, rolling into the folds of the eyelid.

If the skin is too dry, then it doesn’t get easier either: on dry skin, the shadows “give off” the pigment worse, that is, they lie too pale, plus they don’t want to adhere to the surface and fall off. And of course, they visually emphasize dry skin.

Eyeshadow bases solve both of these problems. They smooth out the surface of the eyelid, smoothing out flaking, absorbing excess sebum and creating an ideal “platform” for applying shadows. The shadows are applied with good brightness, blend without spots or unevenness of color, and generally apply comfortably and smoothly.

In addition, they significantly increase the durability of eye makeup: with a good base, the shadows do not crease at all. This way, even at the end of the day, you don’t have nasty streaks of pigment accumulation in your folds, and the color won’t “run away” from the main surface of the eyelid. In a word, an eyeshadow base is not a luxury, but a downright necessary element of makeup. These are one of those things that are almost impossible to give up once you start using them - the difference in results is very significant.

But that’s not all about the usefulness of shadow bases! Most of them also have masking properties. The upper eyelid often “pleases” us with visible blood vessels, and in case of lack of sleep, a reddish or even brown tint. You can cover it up with concealer, but that will bring more problems than joy. A dry concealer will unsightly wrinkle the skin and highlight all the imperfections in its texture, while on an oily concealer the shadows will roll off even faster than without it. You can, of course, powder a moisturizing concealer, but this method is far from universal: not all shadows will fit well on a powder base.

The base for the shadows, as a rule, is not completely transparent, and although it applies much more naturally than foundation, it still significantly reduces the visibility of blood vessels and evens out the skin tone. A light masking result that can’t help but delight.

The strangest thing is that eye shadow bases are not available in all brands and in general are products even more exotic than ordinary makeup bases. To find and compare them, I had to make a lot of effort - but I came out of this test with honor, and next time I will share with you the tests of the bases I tried.

Do you use such databases?

And if not, do you suffer from shadows that crease or shadows that lose their brightness after a few hours of wear?

How to apply eye shadow foundation correctly?

In order for the sweat shadow base to fulfill all its functional tasks, and for the makeup to be long-lasting and beautiful, it is necessary to follow some rules for its application.

Here are the main recommendations from the world's leading stylists:

  • Before applying the base foundation, the skin should be well cleaned with special care products for the skin of the face and eyelids;
  • You should not apply the foundation in several layers, otherwise you may end up with “untidy” makeup;
  • If you have eye cream in your makeup bag, you can use it before applying your base foundation. It is applied after a few minutes, when the cream is completely absorbed;
  • Do not apply the base with your fingers. Buy a special brush, this will help avoid unnecessary stretching of the delicate skin of the eyelids;
  • The base is applied very carefully, with soft, gentle movements;
  • Before applying shadows, you should wait a few minutes until the base is completely absorbed. Then it is slightly shaded and the excess is removed;
  • The basic eyelid foundation is available in different shades. Therefore, preference should be given to the shade that is closest to the color of your skin.

Following these simple rules will allow you to achieve an amazing effect, so your eye makeup will look impressive, and the skin of your eyelids will remain soft and well-groomed.

Primer selection

Like other makeup products, there are a lot of primers. They differ both in their composition and in their manufacturers.

Makeup base

It is worth giving preference to primers that were made on a gel basis. Such bases have the least impact on the skin, and they do not clog pores, but only mask them. Even when using this product on dry skin, it will not leave stains on the surface of the epidermis and is easily absorbed, creating an invisible layer on the skin.

Healthy. When interacting with the dermis, such a base allows the shadows to adhere well to it, preventing them from subsequently crumbling. The gel texture easily hides age spots, various discharges, redness and other noticeable skin imperfections.

Cream-based primers are considered a good option. They are a little heavier on the epidermis, but perform their functions no worse than gel ones. Cream foundations are ideal for dry skin.

Makeup using a base

Rarely, water-based primers are found. They have a liquid texture and can be applied quickly, but can be difficult to distribute evenly, so it takes some practice to quickly and accurately apply them to the skin. These foundations are best suited for combination skin types.

Healthy. When choosing a base for eye makeup, you should pay attention not only to its texture, but also to the color scheme - it should be discreet and have a flesh-beige tint or even transparent.

You should carefully study the ingredients. Good eyeshadow bases must include ingredients that moisturize the epidermis: extracts, oils, vitamins, beeswax or honey. On a good base, the shadows lie in an even and dense layer, are well shaded, without distortion, unevenness, and do not roll down or spread in the future.

Primer for oily dermis

Primer for oily skin

The base for shadows for oily eyelids is selected in such a way that it stimulates the sebaceous glands, mattifying the oily sheen. At the same time, the product should make the makeup flawless and also keep it in perfect condition for a long time.

Important! Typically, all eye makeup bases for oily dermis have an antibacterial effect, thanks to which you can hide (reduce) inflammatory processes in the epidermis.

Before creating makeup, it is best to apply mineral products directly to the eyelid with oily epidermis. They mattify the skin, remove redness, and even out the tone of the dermis. During the evening or day, if the skin begins to secrete an unhealthy amount of sebum, makeup can be touched up using a spray foundation. To apply them, you do not need to wash off your makeup; they are applied over them. To do this, you need to close your eyes, sprinkle the foundation over your eyelids, give it a few seconds to absorb, and start working. After this, you should touch up your makeup if necessary.
