What you remember about the fashion of the 2010s: part two

The return of John Galliano

A video leaked online in 2011 in which John Galliano sits in a cafe, quarrels with neighbors and shows sympathy for Hitler, cost the designer his position as creative director of Christian Dior. The French House terminated the contract.

For several years, Galliano almost completely disappeared from the radar, nothing remained of his former glory, but in 2014 he returned to the world of fashion. Moreover, as the new creative director of Maison Margiela, and his candidacy was personally approved by Martin Margiela.

Let someone say that today the designer is out of place, he seems to be feeling quite well, and his last show with the final appearance of the model Leon Dame became one of the most striking phenomena of the spring-summer 2020 season.

The main fashion trends of spring-summer 2011

The main fashion trends of spring-summer 2011 When we want to find out what will be fashionable in the new season, we read articles, online blogs, watch TV programs and fashion shows. But the abundance of information often causes a mess in the head, when all possible colors and shapes seem fashionable. That is why I asked the Italian stylist Paola, who works for me as a personal shopper and image consultant in Milan, to describe as clearly as possible what trends will be relevant this spring-summer in Europe and the world. Two clarifications: Firstly, a fashion trend usually lasts 3-4 seasons. It has a beginning, a peak and an end. A trend sets a specific theme in clothing, shoes, and accessories for women and men. That is why it sometimes seems strange that the same things remain fashionable as last season. The most advanced designers (like Prada, for example) at their shows focus on 2-3 seasons ahead and in their collections you can often see the beginning of trends. Secondly, the main trends of the season are used in both clothing, shoes and accessories for both men and women. Main trends of spring 2011 Bright colors This trend is at the peak of popularity. The brighter the colors, the better. In collections, designers combine incompatible combinations: green and blue, orange and red, purple and blue, red and pink. Orange is at the peak of popularity. In everyday life, if you are not ready for such extreme combinations in clothing, use bright colors in accessories (bags, bracelets, headbands) 70s Clothes from the seventies are hippie clothes. Wide trousers, bell-bottoms, colored shirts, overalls, big glasses and maxi dresses. The main rule is that there are no rules. Loose hair, fringe on jeans and bags, scarves on the head and neck, wide-brimmed hats Prints: flora, fauna, fruit Clothes are decorated with prints of floral and fruit themes. It is better if these are medium or large flowers. Animal prints remain popular - leopard, tiger, snake. Prints mix with each other. Pure white If your style is romantic, this trend will be relevant for you. Romantic girl in white theme. White color is one of the main trends of the season. Lace This trend continues to be at the peak of popularity. The collections of almost all designers use lace in clothes and accessories. White lace will be especially relevant. Oriental theme Chinese and Japanese motifs appear in ornaments, in kimono shirts, in shirts with a Japanese neck, in the use of red and black Biker punk One of the trends of the 70s, when rock bands became popular, came from previous seasons. Leather trousers, leggings, jackets, skirts, vests, metal accessories, black color. In Italy, in general, leather leggings have now become a basic part of any girl’s wardrobe. Stripes Stripes in clothes should be horizontal, they can be of different sizes. Colored ones are best. A new trend that has just appeared is masculinity in a female form. It will be very, very popular this fall-winter. The suits and shirts, tie and trousers seem to have been borrowed from a boyfriend. Ekaterina Kulakova

Alessandro Michele in Gucci

There have been a lot of rumors about who will replace Frida Giannini as creative director of Gucci. Both Riccardo Tisci and Christopher Kane were named. As a result, in 2020, Alessandro Michele showed his first collection (which allegedly took only a few days to create).

The designer worked with Tom Ford when he was the creative director of the Italian House. During the era of Giannini, Michele was the design director for leather accessories, and since 2011 he was considered Frida’s right hand. However, for most people he was a little-known person, and it is even more curious how quickly Michele changed the fashion world’s ideas about Gucci.

Even the Costume Institute Ball, whose theme this year was camp, actually turned into a Gucci parade, and Michele himself became the co-chair of the evening.

Agender

She strengthened her position in fashion largely thanks to Michele. Even at his first shows at Gucci, both male and female models appeared on the catwalk, but it was often not so easy to distinguish a boy from a girl. The Gucci man himself turned into a romantic, often compared to an artist of the Parisian Left Bank.

Over the past few years, this trend has only gained momentum, and brands increasingly began to combine women's and men's shows. The shows of brands like Berluti feature feminine looks, and the collections themselves include lace (Dior Men with Kim Jones), waist-emphasizing jackets (Haider Ackermann), and pleated skirts (Virgil Abloh's current collection for Louis Vuitton).

Buyers have also changed, they have become much bolder and more relaxed. And why should they be ashamed? The idols of modern youth - Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator and Travis Scott, Timothée Chalamet and Harry Styles - prove by personal example that ruffles, lace, pastel shades and silk can also be worn by guys who play kings in movies and rap. . “My glasses are from Dior, my trousers are from velor. Create, explore, open up, conquer,” declares and encourages silk scarf lover A$AP Rocky in the track Praise the Lord.

The main features of the prestigious trends of the 2010s

The fashion of the last 3 years has again made jackets popular. At the same time, if previously only ladies aged 35 and older were interested in them, now they are completely popular among young people. Short, fitted, with three-quarter sleeves - they all help to create a very exciting and elegant look that is suitable both for the office and for evening walks with friends and going to the cinema.

Another popular wardrobe item is the jacket. At the same time, fitted models with belts take first place. And specifically, thanks to the belts, you can play with the image. Devices play a particularly important role at the moment. In the wake of financial crises and problems, many do not have enough money to buy the latest clothes. And with the help of accessories you can completely update this or that image.

In addition, knitwear comes to the fore. This is due to the fact that this material has unique qualities: it cools in hot weather and warms in cold weather. At the same time, this fabric does not wrinkle, which means it is quite comfortable both to wear and to store.

The beginning of the 10s of the 21st century is characterized by the presence of military-style clothes in the wardrobes of fashionistas. These are the colors of dusty fabric, parkas, jackets, trousers and even skirts. They are all distinguished by a rather brutal cut and ordinary style.

As for the colors in clothes, virtually the entire palette is in fashion. You can choose absolutely any combination. At the same time, even if it seems that things don’t really mix together, you need to put aside prejudices and boldly try on such an image. Naturalness, lightness of fabrics, multi-layering - these are what distinguish the wardrobe of a modern lady. Increased attention should be paid to metallic fabrics. They are now more popular than ever. After all, such materials help to create a formal look even in everyday attire.

Dresses and skirts continue to be on the wave of popularity. And this is due to the fact that they attribute extraordinary emotionality, tenderness and romance to the lady. No matter what kind of lady in a dress becomes a beautiful and noticeable lady. The classics remain popular - pencil dresses, sheaths and models made in the style of the 60s of the twentieth century. Of the skirts, tulip skirts, flared, straight, etc. also hold the palm.

Also in the wardrobe of a modern lady there should be traditional chiffon blouses, ordinary linen shirts, and colored tops. They all go well with suits, pants and skirts depending on the situation.

Celebrity Designers

And again social networks (where would we be without them), which gave rise to and glorified certain heroes. Men's fashion also has its own influencers, and they are not only conventional street style stars, bloggers or aspiring actors, but the designers themselves. More precisely, they existed before, but now the path to national glory has become much shorter. Olivier Rousteing (5.7 million followers), Simon Porte Jacquemus (1.5 million) or Virgil Abloh (4.6 million) are interesting not only (and sometimes not so much) because of what they do in fashion, but including because of the lifestyle they lead and broadcast, and their names are known even to those who do not particularly follow the fashion agenda.

Thus, it seems that the entire Internet and even his dog, the bull terrier Neville, was of interest to his 210 thousand subscribers.

Logomania

The fashion for logos began in the middle of the decade. They were both nostalgic, like Calvin Klein or Versace, and ironic, like Vetements with their DHL T-shirts for a couple of hundred euros. The popularization of the trend was also influenced by social networks and street style heroes: after all, it is much easier to identify an item when the brand name is on display.

Despite the fact that everyone seems to have finally become bored with history, it is still not worth talking about the end of the era of such special effects. In an analytical report from the Lyst platform, for example, the Zucca logo of the Fendi brand became the most popular among buyers: users searched for items with it especially often. Other bestsellers of the past year include a belt with the Gucci logo, a Prada bucket hat, as well as the Louis Vuitton Multi Pochette and Gucci GG Supreme bags, decorated with monograms, of course.

Sneakers as new it-objects

If in the 2000s bags were an unspoken indicator of income, social status and taste, then in the 2010s they were replaced by sneakers. Today it’s hard to even believe that at the beginning of the decade, sneakers or sneakers in combination with a suit, dress or anything that went beyond sports fashion were worn only by out-and-out daredevils. But by the end of the decade, even the most conservative brands are releasing sneakers, and luxury is increasingly collaborating with sports and streetwear brands.

It's scary to remember: the strangest trends of the 2010s

The second decade of the 21st century initially included relics of the 2000s, namely skinny jeans, shiny fabrics, ballet flats, baby-dollar dresses. But closer to 2020, fashion took a rather sharp turn: high-waisted mom's jeans, sneakers with a dress, oversize. What trends from the 2010s now seem ridiculous to us and should be consigned to oblivion?

Passion for logos

In fact, the fashion of printing your logo on all elements of the wardrobe appeared a long time ago, back in the 80s, but in the 2010s it does not lose ground. Moreover, in the 90s, a stream of fakes came to our country, and many fashionistas chased logos all over their chests, not paying attention to the fact that these were not original products. Over the last decade, people have developed an attitude of conscious consumption, and when it comes to branded items, they prefer to buy originals, look for discounts, and also pay attention to quality. However, there are plenty of girls on the subway wrapped in a Louis Vuitton scarf or carrying a Furla handbag.

Bandage dress

More precisely, until 2017-2018, a tight-fitting dress that showed off all the features of the figure was at the peak of popularity. If a girl was going to a nightclub, on a date or a social event, she boldly put on this model and felt like a queen. Around 2018, there was a revolution: overt sexuality was no longer in fashion, and bandage dresses were replaced by straight cuts. However, stars such as the Kardashians continue to wear revealing styles that require shapewear.

Leggings

Remembering the 80s, leggings became fashionable again in the 2010s. In 2013-2017, many girls wore them. The models were different: both translucent for summer and thick for winter. But most often, unlike the 80s, they preferred black leggings. Now this wardrobe item can easily be considered outdated.

Platform or wedge shoes

If in the 2000s heels were still more in fashion, then in the 2010s women who like to visually lengthen their legs thought about comfort and began to wear more stable heels and a solid platform. Moreover, the platform was built into any model: sandals, boots, sneakers! Now those same wedge sneakers are the height of bad taste, and flat or slightly thickened soles have firmly entered into fashion.

UGG boots

Oh, how much some fashionistas adore them that even in 2020 they won’t part with them, although for the fourth year now these winter shoes have topped the anti-trend lists! Even the name of these felt boots is translated from English uggs (ugly boots) as “scary boots”.

Chokers instead of jewelry

A controversial piece of jewelry is a choker necklace. It suits a certain style (rock), top of clothing (open neck). If the neck is wide and short, then the choker emphasizes this even more. It is not surprising that this trend lasted for two years.

Neon

We can safely say that it’s time to remove neon-colored items from your wish list for this season. Acid shades of yellow, orange, light green, which shine in ultraviolet light and literally blind passers-by, are very compelling. Neon doesn’t go well with other colors, and a monochrome yellow outfit resembles a canary.

Hole jeans

We are not talking about a slight abrasion effect with small cuts, but about huge holes on the knees and near the buttocks. In general, such unfashionable jeans are very easy to distinguish: in them, a woman is more likely to be undressed than dressed.

Clearly drawn eyebrows

You can read about this in more detail here. It's time to finally forget about clear rectangles, which came into fashion closer to 2020, but continue to be popular in Russia. Nowadays, naturally disheveled eyebrows, only slightly corrected with pencil or shadow, are more popular.

Pleated skirt

We can say that this trend lasted for a whole decade. If in 2013-2016 all girls wore floor-length skirts, then in 2020 another version of the finely pleated skirt came into fashion - just below the knees. A significant drawback of such skirts was the constantly wrinkled and deformed folds, as well as too thin, completely transparent fabrics. And it’s quite difficult to find the top for them.

Basque

The peak of popularity occurred in the early 2010s. Every second girl wore jackets with a “skirt” or dresses with a peplum to the office or to a friend’s wedding. However, this model is perfect for those with narrow hips.

Down jacket with skirt

This model can still be found on women who purchased such a down jacket a couple of years ago and have not yet had time to change it. In general, this style looks strange, it blows away with the wind and does not warm at all.
