When I first went to look at the laboratory I was to develop, it was in the early stages of construction. Namely, there were bare walls, there was only a certain plan for how everything would be built, which included an approximate layout of the premises.

The marking, however, was made without taking into account the specific needs of the genetic laboratory, because initially it was planned to do other things at this place. Therefore, when I analyzed this plan, I realized that some adjustments would have to be made to it.

The most memorable moment for me personally happened in the room that was intended for electrophoresis. The phoresis room is usually one of the dirtiest and wettest rooms in any genetics laboratory.

In genetic laboratory practice, there is the concept of “wet lab”, which could be translated as “wet lab”. There are analyzes that are carried out using instruments; the process of reading and analyzing the results is all dry work. And there is sample preparation, which involves working with liquids. And the room in which this process is carried out is code-named by biologists as “wet lab” or sometimes also “wet pad”.

Well, there was no water in our wet lab room, so there was no way it was wet enough. Then we met with the engineer who was working on our project, and I told him that water must be installed in the future phoresis room. To which he replied: “I’ll give you some water. But think about how you will do the sewerage.”

And then I felt completely ill. I immediately imagined that now I would also have to understand the structure of sewers, find out what they are like, and most importantly, how sewage is installed in a room where it was not originally provided.

I was immediately loaded with a bunch of information about the angle of the floors and the pressure drop, and they told me how important and serious all of this was. At that moment, I abruptly moved from existing in the role of a laboratory medical geneticist who takes biomaterial, makes an analysis and gives a conclusion, to the role of a person who must decide what to do with the sewerage system.

Fortunately, I didn’t do all this alone. Both in the issue of sewerage and in solving many other problems, my senior comrades helped me a lot. To open a laboratory, it was necessary to resolve many issues at once, for example, obtain a state license. Which, in turn, required obtaining a huge amount of documents, developing standard operating procedures and preparing many other bureaucratic pieces of paper. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to cope with this alone, but fortunately, at our institute at that time there already existed several successfully operating laboratories, so I had someone to help.

In general, building a laboratory from scratch is a very exciting process, very inspiring. You sit and figure out what will happen in which room, where we need an area with high cleanliness, and where - with even higher cleanliness. What pressure drop should we have to prevent contamination? Specific local problems also appeared, for example, the choice of equipment was determined not only by its quality or the cost of consumables, but also by their availability in Russia (as well as delivery times and quality of service).

The work on organizing the laboratory specifically had little to do with genetics at first. At this stage, organizational competencies and common sense were in demand. And when the backbone gradually began to be overgrown with meat - interior decoration, laboratory furniture, instruments appeared, another very important stage began, work began on the selection of personnel. To find a single geneticist or molecular biologist, we had to sift through hundreds of resumes. But more on that next time.
