History of a woman's bag

The first bags were designed for carrying and transporting goods. Miniature soft handbags in the form of a pouch made of leather for coins appeared in the Middle Ages - they were worn by both men and women attached to the belt.

Money bags as an element of women's costume were common both in the Renaissance and in the Baroque period. In the 18th century, during the Rococo period, small soft bags in the form of pouches appeared, called pampadours and reticules.

Women's bags of rigid design appeared much later - only at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries.

I don’t like purses and small handbags; I put everything in my pockets: my phone on the left, and my keys on the right. Sometimes I take with me an old Zara tote bag made of disgusting leatherette. There are a lot of stickers on it from different airports, but I don't peel them off, otherwise they come off along with the skin. The bag contains a power bank, wires, headache pills and other useful things.

Types of bags

  is a small everyday bag that is worn on the shoulder. Suitable for women who prefer to carry a minimum of things with them.
• Messenger bag
  – a model of a bag with a business style flap; made of plain material, has virtually no decor, worn on a belt over the shoulder.

  is a bag model with a flap, designed for students.
• Handheld bag
  – a small bag with two handles.

  is a soft bag with a hard bottom and a fastening clasp.

Materials used and decor of bags

Various materials are used to make bags, the choice of which depends on the purpose of the product. The bulk of bags are made from synthetic leather and fabrics that are highly durable and wear-resistant.

Bags made of genuine leather are considered high-status products: they are expensive! For their production, leather is used, made from the skins of cattle with different textured surfaces, as well as from the skins of exotic animals: crocodile, monitor lizard, python, ostrich, etc.

Natural and synthetic leathers can be embossed, piled, with a varnished surface, with metallization and mother-of-pearl effects, and with a print. Reptile, geometric or fantasy embossing is widely practiced.

In the folklore style, bags woven from wicker or straw, as well as knitted items made from various threads, are popular.

Fur is one of the popular materials for autumn-winter bags: soft and fluffy, such bags are beautiful and incredibly pleasant to the touch!

Transparent plastics are a fashionable material for hard clutches that look like precious crystals in your hands.

Various types of trims and embellishments are used to decorate bags. Embroidery, embossing, applique, inlay with stones and rhinestones, fringe, braids and edging, accessories, even feathers are widely used.

Of course, the leading position will belong to the skin. Among the significant advantages of this texture, it is worth noting its solid appearance, ease of care, resistance to moisture and lack of deformation. But all the advantages are countered by the cost of such a product.

Embossed leather - like a snake or like a crocodile - will look noble and expensive.

If you don’t expect your bag to serve faithfully for many years, you can opt for leatherette. This texture pleases with its variety of shapes and colors, but at the same time it has a reputation as a short-lived material.

It is worth thinking several times whether a model made of velor, suede, fabric or denim is suitable for the role of an everyday bag. Of course, we will not dispute the effectiveness and originality of such accessories, but their practicality is questionable - the noted textures are not subject to weather changes throughout the year. They can simply get wet and lose their stylish appearance.

Styling solutions for bags

Bags are created in the same styles as clothing. The most popular styles are: classic, romantic, sports, minimalism, military, folk.

Classic style bags are traditional in shape, laconic in decor, restrained in color scheme, and maximally functional. These include the famous Birkin and Kelly bags.

Models of romantic style bags have any shape, a variety of colors and decorations in the form of flowers, flounces, embroidery, etc.

In minimalist style bags there is no decor, and the main attention is paid to the sophistication of the silhouette.

Sports style bags are characterized by the use of contrasting color combinations, functional fittings of simple geometric shapes, and prints in the form of inscriptions.

Military style bags are often made in the form of tablets with a long strap.

Folklore style bags are incredibly diverse in terms of artistic and constructive design: bags of various sizes, wicker and knitted models, etc. The color scheme of products of this style is associated with the peculiarities of the culture of the country that designers turn to when creating bag models. For example, in bags with Indian motifs, the design is dominated by blue, orange and purple tones and their combinations, and when referring to African culture, black with white and shades of beige are used.
