DIY natural cosmetics recipes

A healthy lifestyle is gaining popularity today, both among older people and young people. By the way, the usual store-bought products that we use every day can be successfully replaced with homemade cosmetics. The proposed recipes are not only safe for health, but also significantly save your budget.

DIY healing cosmetics

Making homemade cosmetics with your own hands does not require much effort, but the effect is worthy. It takes a little time and natural ingredients to make medicinal formulations. If homemade natural cosmetics contain dairy products, fruits, vegetables or medicinal herbs, then it is best that they are homemade.

Why you should use homemade cosmetics:

  • independent production guarantees a high quality organic product;
  • You can make cosmetics without preservatives and harmful chemical compounds that can at least cause an allergic reaction;
  • self-cooking guarantees lower cost;
  • different components will allow you to experiment during manufacturing.

You can make cosmetics all year round, both in winter and summer, when there is a large amount of fruits, vegetables and medicinal herbs.

Disadvantages of homemade cosmetics:

  • Short shelf life. Cosmetics can be stored from one day to one week.
  • Natural ingredients may be allergenic.
  • Special storage conditions must be observed.

Despite the existing disadvantages, natural formulations have more advantages.

You have decided, after browsing numerous sites for preparing natural cosmetics and reading the wonderful results from using them, to finally try making these products for yourself. Where to start? What will you need for this?

First, there are the ingredients.

Secondly, start with simple recipes.

Third, be willing to experiment. Start by preparing simple single-phase products (based on oils or water). Let's start with an oil or balm for facial skin care. Choose fatty oils that suit your skin type. It is important to consider what season you are preparing the product for: cold or warm. For the winter season, it is better to choose heavier oils - cedar, olive, peach, wheat germ, sesame, and also add a higher percentage of solid oils to the mixture - cocoa, shea, mango. For summer, accordingly, lighter ones - jojoba, hazel, grape seeds, coconut, sasanqua, hemp, etc., you can also use flower waxes for thickening, lighter than bee wax, carnauba and candelilla.

To prepare a facial oil, simply select liquid oils that suit your skin type and add one or more essential oils to the mixture, again, depending on the skin type and the problem you want to solve.

Before you start making the mixture, remember that a higher percentage of solid oils (shea, cocoa, coconut, mango, babassu) in the mixture improves absorption, but makes the balm heavier. Experiment with the proportions, find out which one suits you best: more liquid, or harder, melting on your fingers, with or without wax.

Beeswax is a classic thickener in balms; it also has a slight emulsifying and preservative effect. There are persistent rumors about beeswax that it clogs pores. This is not the case if you select the correct concentration in the product. Ideal - 2-8%. If it is more - up to 20%, then this is more suitable for preparing medicinal ointments, rather than face creams.

You should also remember that natural face balms based on vegetable oils will be softer at room temperature and harden in the refrigerator.

Here are small “cheat sheets” on proportions:

Delicate, translucent consistency of a night face balm.

  1. cocoa butter – 2ml
  2. coconut oil - 4 ml
  3. liquid oils - 20 ml
  4. beeswax - 2 ml

Pleasant, not thick consistency without wax.

  1. cocoa butter - 15%
  2. coconut oil - 40%
  3. liquid oil - 45%

Typical night regenerating mixture.

  1. wax - 1g
  2. cocoa butter - 2 g
  3. shea butter – 4g
  4. liquid oils – 20ml

A mixture without wax and cocoa.

  1. shea butter – 10g
  2. coconut oil - 10g
  3. liquid oil - 8-10ml

The production technology is simple: heat solid oils with wax in a water bath (you can grate the wax to melt it faster), remove from heat, add liquid oils, stir with a wooden stick. Never use metal or enamel utensils when handling oils. It is best to use glass and ceramic containers and a wooden stick, or a silver or gold spoon.

It is also undesirable to use a microwave when making cosmetics; it is believed that microwaves negatively affect the structure of substances.

The base of the product is ready. Cocoa and shea butter have the unfortunate property of settling in the form of granules in balms when they cool. If you see this, it does not mean that the product has deteriorated, it means that you just need to beat it thoroughly. To do this, you can use a mini mixer, or simply stir vigorously until the product thickens. You need to start after it has cooled to room temperature, but has not yet thickened.

After cooling, you can add dietary supplements. It is important that the product cools down; if you add it to a hot product, it will lose its properties. They are added like this: 1 drop at a time, intensively stirring the balm. This can be vitamin E, honey, propolis tincture (no more than 20k per 30 ml of mixture), as well as sea buckthorn and wheat germ oils, which can only be added in small quantities to the mixture, about 5%. You can add infused oils, such as vanilla bean, rose petal, chamomile, calendula, etc.

Now we add essential oils - these are both powerful active additives and flavors of our mixture. To begin, choose 2-3 essential oils, the simplest and most accessible: lavender, tea tree, lemon, orange, geranium, rosewood, ylang-ylang. Citrus oils have a wonderful effect on the skin, but they can cause allergies and are phototoxic - that is, you should not apply a product with them before going out in the sun, otherwise pigmentation may appear. So I usually add them in small quantities to the mixture.

For 30 ml of mixture, the maximum amount, in my opinion, is 20k essential oil. There is a lot of debate about the proportions, some suggest “elephant” proportions, others minimal, I have worked out for myself the optimal average concentration, which will not smell as strong as a very concentrated one, but will also give an effect, unlike a very weak one.

Essential oils dissolve well in fatty oils. First, mix them thoroughly in a small amount of warm base, then add the rest of the balm.

You can add the aqueous phase at the end of preparing the balm. For a simple balm with wax, the maximum concentration of the aqueous phase is 25%. It is better to administer it in the form of aloe gel, so the product will be less susceptible to delamination. Or hydrolates, then the balm will need to be stirred periodically so that it does not separate. It is also advisable to heat the aqueous phase a little before adding it to the balm. To do this, you can place the container with the aqueous phase in a pan of hot water for 5 minutes. Then, drop by drop mixing into the warm balm, add the aqueous phase.

Our product is ready, all that remains is to put it in a beautiful jar and put it in the refrigerator.

It should be remembered that our skin needs natural care products in small quantities, so it is worth applying them drop by drop. Single-phase oil mixtures are applied only to damp skin.

The main quality, in my opinion, for a beginner in making cosmetics is not to cling to exact recipes, dosages and recommendations. don’t be afraid to experiment, replace one oil with another in a recipe, add your own dietary supplements - maybe you have mumiyo or a solution of cedar resin (wonderful assets for natural cosmetics). And if something is missing, notice it or throw it out of the recipe. After all, if you follow basic safety precautions - use clean utensils, high-quality ingredients, read descriptions of essential and fatty oils and other components, then believe me - it will be very difficult for you to harm yourself and the mixture. This is the advantage of natural handmade cosmetics - it’s like cooking, master the basics and experiment!

Lip balm

It will be easier to store this type of cosmetics: most of its recipes contain components whose expiration date you don’t have to worry about.

It must be said right away that beeswax, contained in many lip balm formulations, should only be melted in a water bath, stirring with a wooden stick. You can experiment with the ingredients of this product, the main thing is to ensure that the wax makes up no more than 1/3 of the total mass.

The finished balm should be poured into jars as quickly as possible, before it has time to harden. If you feel that the product has become thick and is inconvenient to pour, place the container with the mixture in a water bath for a short time again and stir.

Peppermint balm

1 teaspoon beeswax

2 teaspoons almond oil

2 teaspoons honey

7 drops mint oil

Melt the wax in a water bath. Without removing the container with wax from the water, add almond oil and honey to it, mix well. Remove the container from the water and add mint oil. Mix everything thoroughly and quickly pour into balm jars before the wax hardens.

Orange balm

1 teaspoon beeswax

2 teaspoons orange oil

2 teaspoons calendula oil

Melt the wax in a water bath, add oil and mix thoroughly.

Coconut balm

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon cocoa butter

1 teaspoon beeswax

1.5 teaspoons castor oil

Melt the wax, cocoa and coconut oils in a water bath and mix with the remaining ingredients.

If you don't have ready-made coconut oil , it's easy to make at home. Grind the coconut pulp and pour boiling water over it (slightly cooled after boiling) so that the water covers the shavings by 3 cm. While the mixture cools, periodically stir the mass and beat with a pestle. Then place the container in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, carefully collect the frozen oil from the surface of the water.

To clean the oil from impurities, you need to melt it in a water bath and strain through a sieve.
