History of construction
The first thing that is associated with the “House of Martian” is a small, observatory-like house, stuffed with expensive electronics that support the operation of a full life support system in the harsh living conditions on the Red Planet. But the new abode of the Hollywood star is not officially called the “House of the Martian”, but with the light hand of American journalists, I owe its name to the rock band “Thirtysecondsto Mars” led by the artist, which translated from English means 30 seconds to Mars.
The house itself has nothing in common with the 4th planet of the solar system. The building was built in the forties of the 20th century, when there was no lunar program yet. It belonged to the American Air Force and was used as a secret film studio where training films for military personnel were shot, as well as photos and video materials from nuclear weapons tests were processed.
The real name of the "House of Martian" is Laurel Canyon Bunker. The building was first purchased from the state in 1994 by artist Mark Lipscomb and lawyer and former judge John Ladner. At that time, the house cost the buyers $750 thousand. Jared Leto had to pay as much as 5 million for the mansion.
In 2002, director Lisa Kholodenko made a film called Laurel Canyon. The plot of the film involves a mansion in the Laurel Canyon area, which has a studio where a rock band rehearses.

The lead singer of the world famous band Thirty Seconds to Mars, an Oscar-winning actor and just a very handsome man, Jared Leto boasts other outstanding abilities
In his free time from his main musical and acting activities, Jared Leto goes rock climbing, tries on designer outfits, takes photographs in the studio of his friend Terry Richardson, and, in addition, draws (he once even studied at the New York School of Fine Arts).
But the musician’s talents do not end there. It is known that he directs most of the videos for Thirty Seconds to Mars himself. Leto tries not to advertise this too much, and therefore usually signs himself as Bartholomew Cubbins, a character from one of the books by the children's writer Dr. Seuss and his creative pseudonym.
However, the actor also makes no big secret of his directorial activities. By his own admission, he strives to provide fans with a way to enjoy music videos “without bias or distraction.”
And, by the way, there really is something to enjoy. The works of Jared the director are distinguished by interesting plot ideas, beautiful and dynamic pictures, and many embedded allusions, meanings and symbols. We suggest watching them in order to at least pass the time until the next Thirty Seconds to Mars concert in Kyiv, which will take place on April 30.
The Kill
One of Jared Leto's early directorial works, made in the style of the 20s of the last century and is a tribute to Stanley Kubrick and his cult film The Shining. The video also takes place in an empty hotel, and some scenes are clearly borrowed from the film masterpiece.
Hurricane
Leto's infamous video work, which was banned from MTV and many other major television channels around the world. The reason for censorship was the excessive sexual explicitness of the content and scenes of violence. Later, another version of the clip appeared, from which the most controversial moments were cut out.
Kings and Queens
This video was shot in Los Angeles over just a couple of nights. The video includes many beautiful and recognizable places of the city, and at the center of the plot are its inhabitants - from street performers to participants in a small bike ride organized specifically for filming. “This is a lyrical, metaphorical and slightly surreal journey through the city of Angels,” Leto himself commented on the work.
From Yesterday
Another fairly early directorial effort by Jared, inspired by and, as a result, containing references to Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor. For some time there were rumors that $13 million was spent on filming the video, which made From Yesterday the most expensive video clip in the world, but in an interview, Thirty Seconds to Mars denied this information. However, the video still boasts the title of the first American video filmed in China.
A Beautiful Lie
Thirty Seconds to Mars' most "environmentally friendly" video was dedicated to the topic of global warming. Made in the style of a documentary film, the video contains many enchanting views of Greenland covered with snow and ice, as well as footage showing how much humanity is harming the environment. It is also curious that Leto signed this work with his alternative directorial pseudonym Angakok Panipak.
Closer to the Edge
Jared dedicated this video to the band's world tour, Into The Wild Tour, which took place in 2010. The clip contains a little statistical data, interviews with fans and, of course, a lot of concert footage.
Do or Die
In the video, now related to the penultimate album of the Mars, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013), Leto used the same directorial technique as in Closer To The Edge. The clip contains interviews with numerous fans, as well as clips from the band's European tour dedicated to the release of the mentioned album. “This is the story of the incredible adventure we all shared this summer. A summer that we will never forget,” Jared shared his impressions then.
Up in the Air
Jared Leto's next directorial exploration of the theme of passion and love turned out to be very bright and exciting, but this time, not so scandalous. The video contains a compilation of plot-wise disparate scenes that can be linked by the common idea of the diversity of art and beauty. Street performers, gymnasts McKayla Maroney and Jordyn Wieber, as well as famous dancer and model Dita Von Teese took part in the filming.
City of Angels
This clip became Leto's second video declaration of love for Los Angeles after Kings and Queens. The video starts and often returns to interviews with members of Thirty Seconds To Mars and many other famous musicians and actors who share their feelings about the “city of dreams.” It is also interesting that despite the traditional formal signature of Bartholomew Cubbins Film, this video became Jared's first official directorial project.
Walk on Water
The latest Thirty Seconds To Mars video, released in the fall of 2020 and related to the band’s latest album, was signed by Leto with his own name without false embarrassment. The video (in fact, like the song itself) is dedicated to modern America, and its filming took place in all 50 states of the country. The footage will also be part of the documentary A Day in the Life of America, which Jared plans to release this year.
If rumors are to be believed, Leto doesn't plan to limit himself to just releasing a documentary. According to American media reports, the musician will also soon begin filming the thriller “77,” which should become his full-fledged debut in the world of feature films.

"House of Martian" today
According to the prevailing opinion, the essential attributes of a bachelor's house are: scattered dirty clothes, a mountain of unwashed dishes, a bed made up around the clock and other elements of “decor” that indicate that there is no woman in the house. However, the same cannot be said about Jared Leto's new acquisition. “The House of the Martian” is a huge mansion, including 12 restrooms, 8 bedrooms, several kitchens and dining rooms, and most importantly, an art gallery and a personal cinema. It is interesting that Jared allocated a room with a stage, previously used as a recording studio, for the art gallery. Does this mean that Leto has decided to take up painting again?

In front of the mansion there is a hangar for an impressive fleet of vehicles, and in the backyard there is a lagoon-shaped swimming pool and stone terraces. The total area of the Hollywood star's new estate is about 50 thousand square meters. Since the mansion was originally planned as part of a military bunker, it is located not in the most prominent place in the city, but on a narrow street in the Laurel Canyon area, bordering Hollywood Hill.
Jared Leto is one of those people who are constantly in search of themselves and rethinking their creativity. So, previously the Hollywood actor was completely immersed in painting, and even thought about giving up his film career for the sake of drawing. Therefore, in his new abode there is no constancy visible. Each room is designed in its own style. Jared Leto travels a lot and has collected a considerable collection of strange things brought from different parts of the world. He used them to decorate his new mansion. So, there you can find a room made in Indian style, and there are also rooms in a strict classical design with antique furniture.
Looking into the “House of the Martian” you can immediately determine that a creative personality with his own author’s style lives there. It is also noticeable that the owner is a bachelor, because a woman would still redecorate the house in the same style.
