The cradle is a miracle from time immemorial, created with love for the sweetest dreams of a baby.

And a hundred years, and many centuries ago, a mother sat by the crib and sang to her beloved baby.

The centuries-old history of children's cradles contains a colossal layer of folk culture and beliefs.

It can be said without exaggeration that all of Russia emerged from cradles, ripples, pegs, rocking chairs, cradles, wicker or hollowed out, suspended or “vanek-stands”.

All of them, so different in execution and appearance, had a common purpose - nurturing the growing little man.

Many nationalities had an ancient belief: it was forbidden to break, burn or lengthen the cradle, as this could shorten the baby’s life.

Each family had its own lucky cradle, and if it didn’t already exist, it was made with prayers and love. And then it was passed on from generation to generation: as soon as it gave way to the newborn.

The shaky frame, made of durable wood, could last 200 years. The year of birth of the child was written on it; such inscriptions can be found on up to six or more museum exhibits. If funds allowed, the shaky stuff was ordered from a good craftsman with a kind heart. He created the cradle with skill and blessing.

Poorer people made cradles themselves. If the family wanted to have many children, then the husband went into the forest and looked for a tree there that was worthy of becoming a cradle for the successors of his family.

The material for the future shaky was chosen responsibly:

it shouldn't have been aspen. It was believed that this tree attracted evil spirits and that a child in such a cradle would die. They used reeds and splints. Bast ripples from the 11th century were found in Novgorod, which indicates the durability of this material. They also used pine shingles and linden bark.

Only in flight does a person grow

The main advantage of cradles and wobbly cradles was the ability to hang them not only in the house, but also in the field and forest. In Siberia, the expression “raising children on a birch tree”

There was a shaky thing hanging behind the flood, in the back of the hut. A ring was firmly driven into the matrix (a log that serves as a support for the ceiling boards), to which a pitcher was attached - a turn of strong thick wire. An unsteady thing was suspended from a coil: ropes extended from its corners, converging at a certain height into a loop, which was put on the lower hook of the spring.

Such a simple system ensured that the cradle rocked when a special strap was pulled down by hand or foot.

Controlling the shaky boat, or “steering,” as people said, was a whole art: with sudden movements of the new guy, the shaky thing would jump sharply, and the child could fly out. The jock, who nursed several generations of children, ensured smooth and calm movements.

Wealthy families hired nannies from poor peasants to rock (rock) their children. These were usually girls of seven or eight years old, among whom there were “glorious nannies” - talented nannies who could quickly calm down a playful or capricious child.

Among some peoples, the cradle was hung on an ochep - a rather long wooden pole. Most often, well-bending and springy birch was used for ochepa.

Hanging the cradle from the ceiling was not accidental:

The warmest air accumulated near the ceiling, which provided warmth for the baby.

In addition, many peoples believed that heavenly forces protect a child raised above the floor, so he grows better and accumulates vital energy.

The floor was perceived as the border between the human world and the world where evil spirits live: the souls of the dead, ghosts, brownies.

To protect the child from them, various sharp objects were placed under the cradle: knives, scissors or a comb.

It was strictly forbidden to rock an empty shaky boat; it was believed that a child would not be able to ride in it. This sign has survived to this day in relation to a crib or stroller.

A spell was written on the cradle: “Budikha, don’t wake up the boy Mikha.” Budikha was the name of an evil spirit that did not allow the baby to sleep. So that Budikha would not disturb the baby, treats were left for him, and the cradle was hung near the icons, under the protection of the saints.

The Russian people had the belief that a laughing baby was a heavenly fragrant and magical garden. Therefore, they tried to decorate the cradles with royal birds, fancy flowers and trees. A radiant red sun was painted at the head, and a clear moon and stars at the feet.

A cross was carved into the legs. This meant that all people walk under God. Children were not placed in a cradle until they were baptized in church.

If a child died, his cradle was left in the forest under a cedar, the tree of the dead, so that the deceased, tired on the road, could lie down in the cradle and rest.
