How to celebrate Halloween at home? October 21, 2010, 00:00 | Katya Kozhevnikova

All Saints' Eve, also known as Halloween, is celebrated in Russia relatively recently, but cheerfully and with pleasure. On the night of October 31 to November 1, theme parties will be held in nightclubs in all major cities, where witches, devils and other ghouls will gather. But, you must admit, sometimes you want to celebrate a holiday at home, with friends. I'll tell you how to prepare a home Halloween so that no one will regret missing the party at the club.
Merry Halloween in Russian
Although Halloween is not a Russian holiday, it is easy to imagine what kind of evil spirits would gather in our country. Our unclean forces are, first of all, witches and devils, as well as spirits of various elements - water spirits, goblins, swamp kikimoras. You can invite your friends to dress up as these creatures as they imagine them .
If we recall folk tales and Russian literature, it is clear that our domestic evil spirits and undead are not as terrible as they are made out to be. Devils and witches are not evil forces, but rather slobs, jokers and petty mischief-makers who love to have fun (although their idea of fun sometimes differs from that of humans).
But, one way or another, in the company of Russian evil spirits you need to have fun and play different games - funny, cheerful and a little stupid. If you have more than ten guests at your party, you can arrange a game “Murderers” , adding a little atmosphere of horror to the evening. The names of all guests are written on pieces of paper (their characters can be used if they are not repeated). Then all the pieces of paper are mixed, and each participant draws one for himself. If someone pulls out a piece of paper with their name on it, a draw takes place.
Each participant in the game is a “killer”, and the name written on a piece of paper is his victim. “Murder” occurs in this way - the killer must privately show the victim a piece of paper with his name on it. When this happens, the “victim” gives the killer a piece of paper with the name of his potential victim and all the others that he managed to collect. For those killed, the game ends, for the rest it continues. The one who collected the most pieces of paper won.
The beauty of this idea is that it is casual - you can eat, dance, play other games. Throughout the evening and creates a feeling of slight paranoia - no one trusts anyone and does not want to be left alone with anyone. In practice it's fun and quite creepy. If you have talented people visiting you, you can safely offer them creative games. For example, the game "Fairy Tales" . Guests are divided into two teams, each of which chooses a storyteller.
The storyteller tells a well-known fairy tale, participants from the opposing team must show it in real time - the narrator speaks, the actors show. After this, the teams change roles.
Naturally, the narrator can make fun of his actors. For example, he may say: “Then the sleeping beauty began to stretch voluptuously.” There's nothing you can do, you'll have to stretch and stretch voluptuously. In general, the more the storyteller deviates from the well-known plot, the funnier it turns out. And if we are talking about Halloween, then you can add a creepy ending to the tale.
For example, remember the fairy tale “Turnip”? At the end, the presenter can say: “And then the Turnip opened one eye, bared its teeth and ate Grandfather and Grandmother, Granddaughter and Bug, only the Cat and Mouse managed to escape. Moral: don’t grow genetically modified vegetables.” When the actors try to cope with hysteria by showing such a fairy tale ending, fun is guaranteed for everyone. The Alphabet game also requires creativity and acting skills from guests . The idea is that two people act out a dialogue on a given topic in such a way that each phrase begins with the next letter of the alphabet. For example: “Oh, is it you again?” - “Bah, who do I see!” To give a hint, you need to write all the letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper so that the participants in the game do not get lost.
Since it's Halloween, we need to give appropriate themes. For example: “The devil in a female form is trying to persuade a young man to sign an agreement”, “Solokha is trying to take away a month from the devil”, “A young girl is on a date with a vampire, the first has romantic feelings, the second is just very hungry”, “Baba Yaga is trying to cook Ivan the Fool, he resists.” This game is usually fun to both play and watch. In general, any games, such as association or twister, can be made on a Halloween theme. This only makes them funnier. Well, if you are really confident in the psychological stability of your guests and their willingness to play seriously, you can arrange a truly scary holiday called “Death Row” .
According to the plot, all the people invited to you are criminals sentenced to death. Tell each of them in their ear what they are accused of. One, suppose, kidnapped people for ransom, another killed several people, the third committed high treason. Each player will have to come up with legends and crimes.
After this, you leave all the “death row” prisoners in one room and warn that every hour (or half an hour, more often), an executioner will come into the room and take one person to death. The room should have dim light, preferably from candles.
Death row inmates must decide among themselves who will be executed next. Only the last one has a chance to survive. Accordingly, in the intervals between executions they decide who will be next, try to prove their innocence, and weave intrigues. To make things more interesting, you can get an executioner’s hat so that your friends don’t think that this is all a joke.
If you get into the game seriously, it becomes truly scary. Imagine realizing that you are a murderer, being afraid of death, lying that you are innocent, and sending others to their deaths. It's all pretty creepy. Therefore, the “executed” whom you took out of the room must be soldered with hot mulled wine, told jokes, in general, brought to their senses.
In any case, your friends will not forget this holiday. In a good or bad way. How do you like to celebrate Halloween?

"The Video Dead" (1987)
Occult TV. That in itself sounds pretty funny. But once you turn on this black box, it becomes no laughing matter. Firstly, it shows one and only movie - "Bloody Zombie Nightmare". And secondly, at some point the real living dead begin to crawl out of it.
Fortunately, you can get rid of them. It is enough to pretend that you consider them normal people, and then wait for the right moment and go through the uninvited guests with a chainsaw. But before that, it’s worth watching how funny they move and, at a snail’s speed, tear apart victims who absolutely do not want to resist.
The Addams Family, 1991
A cult black comedy based on the 1964 cartoon of the same name about an odd family starring Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ritchie.
The head of the colorful family, Homer Addams (Raul Julia), had a fight with his own brother Fester many years ago. However, a quarter of a century later, Homer's older brother again crosses the threshold of the Gothic Addams House. The children of Homer and his wife Martisha Wednesday and Pugsley do not believe in the pious thoughts of their newly-made uncle and use all sorts of tricks to bring the inheritance hunter out into the open.
While The Addams Family received mixed reviews from film critics, it turned out to be a commercial success and recouped its production costs several times over. And two years later, the second part of the black comedy about the grave family, so beloved by the viewer, was released.
The Witches of Eastwick, 1987
A dark fantasy comedy directed by George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet) starring Cher, Susan Sarandon and Mechelle Pfeiffer as witches from a small town in New England.
Alexandra, Jane and Suki are dissatisfied with their lives, each of them has a failed personal life behind them. To somehow brighten up the gray days, on Thursdays women gather to drink martinis, dream and do a little magic. Soon their prayers for the perfect man will be answered. Charming Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson) appears in the small town of Eastwick. From this moment on, the friends' lives will never be the same.
The film "The Witches of Eastwick" received positive reviews from film critics. On the authoritative American film site Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an impressive rating of 74%.
Hocus Pocus, 1993
American comedy fantasy film about three witches who yearn to gain eternal youth. Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker.
This witch trio was executed for their evil deeds back in 1693, but according to legend, if a virgin lit a candle in their house on Halloween night, the witches Winifred, Mary and Sarah would rise from their graves and eat all the children in the city, to gain eternal youth. Three hundred years later, on October 31, 1993, the Dennison family moves to the city where witches once lived. Nothing has changed in their home since then, and the house itself has been turned into a museum. And exactly on Halloween night, the eldest son Dennison lights a candle. Now nothing can hold back the witch's power anymore
Although Hocus Pocus was not a huge commercial success, it became a cult classic and one of the most watched Halloween films.
The Witches, 1990
Another sinister story about witches who hate little children, based on the novel of the same name by Ronald Dahl, starring Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkins.
Grandmother's stories about witches carefully masquerading as old women always seemed to little Luke to be nothing more than scary fairy tales. If only the boy knew that one day he would accidentally find himself at a meeting of these inhuman creatures. The witches' agenda is to turn all the children of England into mice. The same fate awaits Luke, who ends up in their lair. But, even in the guise of a mouse, Luke is not going to give up and continues to fight for himself and the fate of the other children.
In June of this year, it became known that star director Robert Zemeckis (Gothika, Allies) is going to re-film the novel and very soon we will see a terrifying story in the light of modern special effects.

"The Frighteners" (1996)
Before taking on his opus magnum - the Lord of the Rings trilogy - Peter Jackson spent a long time working on horror and trash. One after another, the cult films “In Bad Taste”, “Living Dead”, “Heavenly Creatures” were released on the screens. The director ended this period of creativity with “The Scarecrows,” Jackson’s last declaration of love for B-movies.
A young adventurer played by Michael J. Fox can communicate with ghosts. He decided to use his gift for selfish purposes. Having made friends with the spirits, he opens an unusual business: ghosts move into houses, make noise, scare the residents, and then a savior appears who, at a reasonable price, “drives out” the unpleasant neighbors. This is how the main character would live in peace if all the ghosts were kind. But everything turns out far from rosy. Because otherwise it wouldn't be a horror film.
"Dark shadows", 2012
Tim Burton's gothic comedy starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green.
Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) is a wild womanizer, he is rich and successful, his life can only be envied. But the time has come to settle down, because he has fallen in love with a beautiful young girl, Josette Dupre, and plans to marry her.
However, Collins's witch maid Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) is not happy with this course of events, because she has long been in love with Barnabas unrequitedly.
Angelique is plotting an insidious plan, namely, to kill Josette, and turn Barnabas himself into a vampire and bury him alive in a crypt. And when he is found a few centuries later, she will be the only one who has been waiting for him all these years and Barnabas’s heart will melt. Two centuries later, the vampire is found. But will the witch's plans come true? You will find out by watching the movie “Dark Shadows”.
"My Name Is Bruce" (2007)
The horror boom that occurred in the 2000s revived interest in the golden era of horror and its heroes. One of them was Bruce Campbell, who became famous for his role as Ash in Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. Success as an actor became a curse for him - he was firmly assigned the role of a sarcastic fighter against the living dead, the producers simply did not see him in other roles.
But Campbell had enough self-irony to turn this curse to his advantage. In 2007, he himself directed the film “My Name is Bruce,” in which he played the main role – himself. In this comedy, he is the direct opposite of the heroic Ash. The real Bruce is a failed actor who lives in a trailer and suffers from alcoholism. His wife left for the producer, all his friends turned away, and Bruce can only look for solace at the bottom of a bottle or dog bowl (yes, he also feeds his faithful dog exclusively with alcohol).
Unexpectedly, Campbell gets a chance to prove that he, too, is worth something. The wrath of an ancient Chinese demon falls on a small town, and the locals are confident that only Ash will save them. At first, Bruce is excited - he thinks that he has finally been given a big role in a movie again. However, he soon begins to realize what kind of trouble he has gotten into.
Although the film did not live up to the distributors' expectations, it cannot be called a failure. The emphatically naive plot and abundance of gags paved the way for the full return of Evil Dead to the screens, which became the series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”
John Dies at the End (2012)
At the beginning of the 2000s, David Wong made his novel publicly available, the main intrigue of which was already revealed in the title itself. Over time, a kind of cult developed around the book, and the rights to the film adaptation were bought not by anyone, but by Don Coscarelli himself, who gave the world the Phantasm tetralogy.
Young slacker John, out of stupidity or curiosity, takes a mysterious drug “soy sauce”, under the influence of which people see disgusting monsters, use hot dogs instead of telephones and fall into portals leading to parallel worlds. The worst thing is that these are not hallucinations at all, the substance really opens the way to other dimensions.
The main character Dave accidentally injected himself on a syringe with “soy sauce”. Now, together with John, they have to fight monsters against their will and try to put everything in its place.
A witty and extremely intricate plot, full of satire and sarcasm, puts the film on a par with such a masterpiece as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. May fans of Douglas Adams forgive us for this comparison, but it belongs to Coscarelli himself. In general, if you haven’t yet seen this cocktail of horror, comedy and science fiction, then now is the time. (And don't worry, John won't die in the finale.)
