What is the best way to apply eye shadow?
Shadows are applied in various ways, which vary depending on the desired effect and the specific type of cosmetic product. So, to transfer the shade to the eyelids, you can resort to the following tools:
- applicator with a soft oval tip , which always comes with regular compact shadows. A standard tool from a set may not always be of high quality and convenient to use, so if necessary, you can purchase several pieces separately. This device is great for applying a base or painting large areas, but it is not suitable for thin and delicate lines;
- professional brushes (best with high-quality artificial bristles to minimize the risk of allergies). There are many varieties of such tools with different degrees of bristle hardness, different lengths and head shapes. There are separate brushes for base, for fine lines, for shading, for applying eyeliner, etc.;
- Eye shadow can be applied simply with your fingers , this method is especially convenient if they are cream. Using patting movements, you can achieve uniform distribution, but this method, of course, is not suitable for drawing details.
Some types of shadows are made in such a way that no additional devices, for example in the form of a pencil, are needed to apply them. Everyone chooses for themselves what is convenient for them to use, but the most opportunities are provided by the use of brushes.
Mistake #6: Watch out for shimmery shadows!
Shimmers or shimmering shadows perfectly highlight the eyes, but, unfortunately, draw attention to heavy eyelids and wrinkles. Therefore, it is better to leave them to twenty-year-old starlets. When using glitter eyeshadow, stick to the rule: less is more. Or the older, the less. In the sense that women are not recommended for experimenting with shiny shadows.
Apply shimmery shadow only to the inner corners of the eye, the center of the upper eyelid and under the outer edge of the eyebrow.
Apply a base so that the shadows do not roll off
The foundation (or base) for eye shadow has a very important purpose - thanks to its use, eye makeup lasts much longer, without creasing or changing its original appearance. In addition, the base allows you to make the colors of the shadows more saturated and helps hide imperfections on the skin of the eyelids. There are special cream, gel and liquid foundations offered by leading cosmetics manufacturers, and all you need to do is simply purchase the product and start using it in your practice. The scheme of action is as follows: you need to apply the composition to cleansed skin in a thin layer using a special brush or finger, and then carefully shade the boundaries. After a few minutes (a pause is needed for the base to dry), you can begin to apply shadows.
If you don’t have a purchased base on hand, you can try replacing it:
- foundation;
- to enhance the color intensity, you can apply a white pencil to the skin;
- the easiest way out is to apply the shadows wet;
- Some people risk using lip balm together with foundation, but this is a very extravagant solution that can lead to an allergic skin reaction.
Types of eye shadows and tips for applying them to the eyes
The entire variety of decorative eye cosmetics offered can be divided into groups based on consistency and texture. Each of the categories has its own significant advantages and some disadvantages, so the choice of shadows should be justified and conscious.
How to paint eyes with dry eyeshadow
Dry shadows are presented in two groups: loose and compact (pressed). They don’t have any special differences in application, but the latter ones are easier in terms of transportation. Application to the eyelid is possible in almost any way: with the applicator offered by the manufacturer, with a finger, or with brushes. The selected tool just needs to be placed in a box with shadows, take a small amount and can be transferred to the eyelid. The only caveat of the procedure is that when transferred, the particles may fall off onto the skin, usually on the cheek under the eye, so afterward it is important to carefully remove the residue with a soft brush. Some people pre-apply a little powder or foundation to this area to make it easier to erase everything later.
How to use liquid eyeshadow
This type of shadow in its consistency is more similar to a regular thin cream, and it is this property that provides them with increased stability - the resulting coating retains the brightness of the colors even after several hours.
These shadows can be applied both in hot weather and in cold weather - they do not spread, do not crack or roll down. Those who are used to using regular dry eye shadow will have to tinker with liquid ones - they are more difficult to apply, and this must be done extremely quickly. You can apply color to the eyelid with your finger, a sponge, the applicator included in the kit, or a brush (flat and not very thick). The created makeup will look more neat when applying just one layer, which should dry well so that the eyelids do not stick together and the picture does not deteriorate. Such shadows can successfully replace eyeliner.
How to apply mousse eyeshadow on your eyelids
Mousse and cream shadows are often sold in small jars and can be applied with a brush or applicator.
A similar composition must be applied to the eyelid quite quickly and skillfully, since they actively dry out and if the layers are layered for a long time, the previous ones can begin to roll off. There are usually no further difficulties with using the product. Simply take a small amount onto the brush and apply it onto the eyelid with smooth movements, distributing evenly. The main disadvantage is the tendency to roll in folds, so such shadows are often used not to create the main picture, but as a basis on which crumbly products fit well.
How to use eyeshadow stick
Applying eyeshadow pencil is very simple - you just need to sketch the required area of the eyelid, and then, if necessary, carefully shade the edges with a brush.
When using the product, you can completely do without any additional tools, which is a huge plus and convenience of this type of shadow. There are varieties of pencils - stick shadows. Typically, such shadows are a composition pressed into a rod, which is placed in a plastic “box” with a twisting mechanism. This form is convenient for transportation; shadows can be applied without special tools.
Step-by-step instructions for applying eyeshadow with photos
Shadows must be applied to the eyelid in stages, without omitting a single element from the overall process - only in this case the result will meet expectations. So, the general algorithm of actions is as follows:
- the first step is to cleanse and moisturize the skin, this will allow the makeup to go on more evenly;
- at the second stage, the base is applied, and when it dries, you can begin applying flowers;
- Use the lightest shade to paint the inner corner and, if necessary, to widen the look, also the area under the eyebrow;
- the place of the darkest shade of the shadows is the outer corner. To achieve a smooth transition, you need to start adding color in the middle of the eyelid, gradually making it richer towards the corner;
- the optimal number of colors for eye makeup is three, shades are selected depending on the occasion and type of appearance;
- the darkest shade of eyeshadow is applied directly along the eyelash line;
- all borders must be carefully shaded;
- At the final stage, mascara is applied and the eye makeup is ready.
Shadow application areas
To make it easier to master the technique of applying shadows, the eye area is conventionally divided into several zones. Next we will tell you how to work with each of them.
Directly under the eyebrows
Usually the lightest shadows are applied here, which, by reflecting light, visually increase the distance between the eyebrow and the eye. You can use two or even three different shades at the same time:
- in the first case, a lighter tone from the inner corner of the eye to its middle part, and a darker tone from this place to the outer corner of the eye;
- in the second - one above the inner corner of the eye, the other above its middle part, the third above the outer corner. This creates an additional effect, a play of tones.
Upper eyelid
The brightest of all the shadows used is applied to this area, which should preferably be combined with the color of the clothing. Here you can also create combinations of two or three tones (the lightest on the part adjacent to the inner corner, the brightest on the middle part and the darkest on the outer third of the eyelid).
The options can be very different, giving completely different effects. But in any case, the shadows are applied from the eyelashes to the crease of the eyelid.
Circuit
Its role is to emphasize the size and shape of the eyes. This is the darkest shadow, applied using a pencil, thin applicator or pointed brush and follows the line of the upper eyelid crease. Usually it is shaded.
Lower eyelid
Shadows of the same shade as on the upper eyelid, or the tone of the contour, are applied here. They are applied towards the outer corner of the eye - barely noticeable, properly shaded: this gently emphasizes the line of the eye or visually slightly changes its shape.
How to properly apply eye shadow wet
As already mentioned, applying eyeshadow wet makes the color more expressive and brighter and helps enhance the durability of the makeup. The principle is to apply the product to the eyelid with a damp applicator, which has previously been soaked in water and excess moisture has been removed. Mineral-based shadows are best suited for applying this technique.
There is no need to pour water into the shadows themselves, just a little moisture on the brush or applicator is necessary. The resulting composition is applied as a regular store-bought product - on the base or simply cleansed skin of the eyelid. Also, do not neglect carefully shading the borders to obtain the best result.
Sequence of applying shadows
When starting to apply eye shadow, first of all, you need to thoroughly dust your eyelids with loose powder (to remove excess powder, first lightly rub the puff or sponge applicator on your hand).
Using a soft brush, lightly apply the lightest shade (or shades) to the upper eyelid, fading it completely in front of the eyebrows.
At the very tip of a narrow thin applicator or brush, take a little dark tone and apply it several points, following the curve line, from the outer corner of the eye at the edge of the movable part of the eyelid to the middle of its crease. Blend until a dark, arched line forms along the border of the eyeball.
Then, using a thin brush with slightly beveled edges or an applicator, apply the main shade (or tones), intensifying it towards the border of the lashes. Extend the shadow a little towards the temples and blend from the outer corner of the eye to the inner. This is, in general terms, everyday makeup for the upper eyelids.
For greater expressiveness, you can apply a small white spot at the most convex point of the eyelid - almost a dot, but be sure to shade it.
To set the shadows (and if they are oily, to prevent them from spreading), you can apply loose powder to them with a brush.
