Typical French breakfast-lunch-dinner

The food system in France is the exact opposite of the well-known rule: eat breakfast yourself, share lunch with a friend, and give dinner to your enemy.


French breakfast - always with a croissant

The French breakfast is very modest and is not without reason called the little breakfast (le petit déjeuner). Most often it is limited to a cup of coffee and a small bun, bagel or sandwich. It is interesting to note that at breakfast the French prefer sweet sandwiches - often bread with butter and jam.

Lunch (in French terminology, “breakfast”, le déjeuner) begins at 12 noon. It usually consists of appetizers, green salad, meat or fish dishes, cheese and coffee.

Evening food, at 6 - 7 pm, is called lunch (le dîner) and also includes several dishes: an aperitif, a green salad, a hot dish (meat with a side dish), a cheese plate (several types of cheese cut into small pieces and laid out on a specially designed for this plate) and coffee with sweets (often chocolates, cookies).

The culinary traditions of the French have been preserved not only in good restaurants, but also in ordinary families. At festive family dinners and especially at dinners with guests, you can clearly see the main features of French cuisine.

Before lunch, guests are offered an “aperitif” - alcoholic drinks with nuts, almonds or dry biscuits - to stimulate the appetite. The dinner itself, as in the 16th century, begins with an “introduction”: vegetable, meat or fish appetizers. Soup is now rarely eaten, more often in the villages. The basis of a festive city dinner is fish, meat or poultry with corresponding white or red wines.


Snail dish

Abroad, the French are considered lovers of frogs, and it is not at all accidental, because the French really willingly eat the tender white meat of the frog’s hind legs, which tastes like chicken meat. However, this is quite an expensive treat for a family dinner, so frog legs are not enjoyed every day.

In an ordinary French family, they most often eat steak with fried potatoes, stewed meat with vegetables, rabbit stew or rooster in wine. Along with beef steak, horse meat steaks are prepared, which are sold in special butcher shops.

Among the exotic dishes for Russians, the French love shells and snails. Some shells are eaten raw - they resemble oysters. Others are specially prepared - their meat is similar to the meat of crabs or crayfish. A very tasty dish is made from large escargot snails: they are baked in oil with parsley and garlic and served right in the shell.


Bûche de Noël

For the main family holiday - Christmas - in the old days they cooked roasted wild boar. Then it was replaced by a pig, and now more and more often by a turkey. The Christmas table is usually decorated with a dish of oysters and a special, oblong-shaped cake - a “Christmas log” (bûche de Noël). The final part of the holiday dinner consists of green lettuce, cheese, fruit, sweets and coffee. After coffee, guests are offered cognacs or liqueurs; they are collectively called “digestifs” - facilitating digestion. If the aperitif opens the festive dinner procedure, then the digestif completes it.

Last year I had the opportunity to visit the heart of France - Paris.:) One of the things that struck me about Parisians is their desire to sit/lay/sunbathe on all possible and impossible surfaces. People sit on the grass at the foot of the Eiffel Tower; sitting with their legs dangling towards the water, right on the stone embankments of the Seine; they organize joint yoga classes under the windows of the Louvre... Even roadsides and paved squares are not immune from those who want to relax a little. Probably, this is still the same l'art de vivre - the ability to enjoy every minute and turn the world around you into the ideal backdrop for your own story.

I often remember my trip fondly and miss this city. But, as Hemingway said, it is “a holiday that is always with you.” Therefore, today I invite you to plunge into the atmosphere of a picnic a la francaise - and get inspired for a memorable vacation in the last days of summer.

What to take with you: essentials for a French picnic

• Beautiful plaid and textiles for serving

In this case, “plaid” does not specifically mean a warm blanket (although you can also take it with you in case of cool weather). Bring a fairly large blanket, such as linen or tapestry. A beautiful pattern or a certain color scheme will create a mood and look interesting in the photo; you can also choose napkins and towels to match. And if you are going somewhere by car, you can take pillows with you in bright pillowcases - both beautiful and comfortable.

An interesting idea: immediately assemble individual sets of cutlery for each picnic participant. This can be done using textile pockets or simply by tying the devices with a napkin.

• Dishes: think about nature - take reusable ones

Yes, disposable plastic tableware is very convenient. But even if we conscientiously take it with us and take it to a recycling point (if there is one in the city), the damage from the amount of plastic used and the resources for its production and processing still remains incomparable. Therefore, I urge you to be more decisive: take reusable dishes to your picnic. You don’t have to take your grandmother’s set with you, although if it fits perfectly into the mood, then why not? But you can take that very nostalgic enamel mug, a couple of white plates for “Frenchness” and real cutlery, designed according to the idea from the previous point. It's not at all the same as thin plastic, right?

Another very cool solution is wicker trays and stands. And the option with a canopy from insects was invented by a genius, no less:

• Food: stereotypes are delicious

The minimum program includes: - crispy baguette;

- Brie cheese, Camembert, Roquefort, goat cheese or any other cheese you prefer;

— croissants: with sweet and savory fillings (you can buy them without filling at all and turn them into delicious sandwiches with your favorite filling);

• Drinks: unusual tastes and original presentation

Of course, the classic for a French picnic is still wine. But if you’re not a fan, it’s hot outside, or you just want something cool rather than alcoholic, then lemonade will be your option. Especially if it's homemade. But store-bought can also be served in an interesting way: decorated with berries, fruits and even flowers, and also poured into a more aesthetically pleasing container.

• An absolute must-have – wicker basket

Yes, a wicker basket is very necessary. It can be anything: open and with a lid, a special design for a picnic or the most ordinary one. Still, any wicker basket immediately adds a special charm. And you can also put everything listed in it - this is also calculated ;)

What to wear: putting together the look of a French woman on vacation

First of all, any French woman values ​​​​comfort. Therefore, wear what is comfortable for you.

But if we talk about some typical attributes or creating a stylized image, then give preference to a dress or sundress. Plain, striped or polka dot, just my favorite! If there is something “vintage” in your wardrobe, then this is immediately +100 to the femininity of the image. I’m imagining something in the spirit of Dior’s New Look or Audrey Hepburn’s outfits from “Roman Holiday” and “Pretty Face” :)

And accessories will help you set the right accents in a modern look: straw boater hats, scarves and berets of all stripes.

Distinguish between menu and map

The word "menu" in Russian and French means different things. What we call a “menu”, the French call “ La carte ” (la carte). But the word “ Menu ” means what we usually call “business lunch” or “set lunch”. Usually this is a set of 2-3 dishes that can be ordered on certain days and times. This set costs less than if you ordered all the dishes separately.

Formule du jour can have the same meaning . Be careful. If you ask the waiter to bring exactly the “menu,” he may misunderstand you, decide that you have already made your choice, and start bringing food (this is rare, but it happens).

La Carte de Vins is a wine list. The best thing to do is to ask the waiter to choose a wine that matches your food.

There is also such a point: “ Une dégustation ” is a tasting of several dishes or, for example, types of beer. They will bring you a little of everything.
