Question for a cosmetologist: is it possible to use makeup on an airplane?

Is it possible to carry cosmetics in hand luggage?

Airlines allow cosmetics to be carried in hand luggage, with the exception of certain items classified as particularly dangerous.

Basic rules for transporting cosmetics in hand luggage:

  1. Solid makeup products can be taken in any quantity within the general norm for weight or dimensions approved by the carrier's rules for passenger hand luggage.
  2. Cosmetics with a liquid consistency are transported in containers with a volume of no more than 100 ml. One passenger can carry 1 liter of liquids in hand luggage.
  3. All cosmetics must be packaged in a thick plastic bag or a special cosmetic bag.
  4. Containers containing liquid products must indicate the nominal volume.
  5. Airlines do not allow containers with liquid cosmetic compositions in bottles and bottles larger than 100 ml to be transported in the aircraft cabin, even if they are only half or a quarter full. During inspection, the volume indicated on the product labeling will be taken into account.

The category of liquids includes perfumes, creams, tonics, lotions, lip balms, deodorants, sprays, shampoos, conditioners, hair gels, toothpaste, as well as mascara and liquid eyeliner. You can read more about how to carry liquids in hand luggage and airplane luggage here.

What is prohibited from taking on board an airplane?

In the passenger cabin, it is prohibited to carry potentially dangerous products as hand luggage, as well as cosmetics from the category of liquids in bottles and containers with a volume of over 100 ml.

What you cannot take in hand luggage:

  1. Manicure set (contains cutting and piercing objects).
  2. Deodorant sprays and hairsprays (the internal contents are under pressure).
  3. Acetone for nail polish remover (highly flammable).

The above items can be carried in general checked baggage. Hairspray, aerosols, deodorant sprays and other formulations contained in a bottle under pressure are transported tightly closed.

You can carry cosmetics in containers up to 0.5 liters in checked baggage (total 2 liters per person). We also suggest that you find out whether it is possible to take deodorant, spray, or aerosol on the plane.

What happens in case of violations

Before boarding, all passengers, without exception, undergo a pre-flight inspection, which will identify any violations regarding the carriage of certain items in hand luggage.

If containers with cosmetic products with a volume of more than 100 ml are found in a passenger’s travel bag, he is required to transfer these compositions to general baggage. If a passenger travels without a suitcase or his weight has already reached the maximum limit, he will have to throw the bag away or send it to the airport storage room for a fee.

Similar requirements will be imposed on passengers whose carry-on luggage is found to contain potentially dangerous cosmetics and accessories.

Let's sum it up

What rules apply when carrying cosmetics on an airplane:

  • Pressed substances and liquids (up to 1 liter, per package up to 100 ml) are placed in hand luggage.
  • For ease of inspection, it is recommended to transport cosmetics in a transparent bag.
  • Aerosols, cutting and piercing objects (manicure sets) must be checked in as checked baggage.
  • Please note: the cosmetics that you take with you on the flight should not be prohibited for export from or import into the country.
  • If you are not allowed to take cosmetics into the cabin during security checks, try to have time to check them in as luggage or send them by mail.
  • Securely pack cosmetics that you transport in the luggage compartment.

Cosmetics in luggage on a plane

Airlines do not have any special requirements for carrying cosmetics in checked baggage. The basic rule is compliance with the standards for the weight and dimensions of the suitcase in which all the traveler’s belongings are transported. If the travel accessory is large or its weight exceeds the permissible limits, the passenger will have to pay extra for excess weight or oversized luggage.

How to properly package cosmetic products

It is in the passenger’s interests to properly pack cosmetics carried in general baggage. Liquid formulations must be tightly closed, which will prevent them from leaking onto clothes and other things in the suitcase.

Check that powders and other dry powder cosmetics are sealed securely. If the package is opened, they may crumble and stain things.

Experts recommend packing all cosmetics in a separate plastic bag or a special cosmetic bag (preferably transparent). You can only take one set of cosmetics into the salon in a tightly closed accessory. If you are transporting cosmetics in general luggage, pack fragile products (for example, bottles of expensive perfume) among soft items in the middle part of the suitcase.

Be sure to comply with all carrier requirements for carrying cosmetics in checked baggage and hand luggage. For convenience, we recommend taking disposable cosmetics on the plane, packaged in miniature containers (these are usually provided in hotels). Before packing your makeup bag for the trip, think again about what products you should definitely take with you, and what you can leave at home or buy upon arrival in another city or country.

Cosmetics on a plane: what to take on board?

Moisturizing sheet mask with pearl extract, Ampoule Essence Mask Sheet Pearl, Holika Holika

A rare Korean mask whose patterns do not make you feel uncomfortable: the slits for the eyes and lips are large, and the fabric lies comfortably. After the mask, the skin looks hydrated, and it is. After it, you don’t even need to apply additional cream. The concealer and foundation go on smoothly. The only negative is perhaps too much serum, which can be inconvenient on the plane. But the mask is worth getting used to!

Patches Gold Lift Expert, Eveline

We wrote about Eveline hydrogel patches with a fabric base - let us remind you that we were delighted. So we took these with confidence that everything would be fine. And besides, it’s beautiful, because we will try on pure gold. Expectations were not disappointed, the swelling is actually getting smaller. The only thing in which “precious” patches are inferior to their “comrades” is that they creep a little more. But you also have nowhere to run and hurry on the plane, right?

Softening lip cream Blistex

The cream is thick and spreads in a thick layer. Reminded us of Nivea in the blue washer. But it’s inconvenient to take a puck with you, but a small tube is fine. Lips become softer, it is quite capable of nourishing and eliminating small cracks, but if your lips are very chapped, we recommend pairing some other balm with the cream. Blistex is good because it lasts a long time. So much so that you are unlikely to return to it during the flight.

Antiseptic hand spray, Mixit

Agree, the thing is irreplaceable and practical. And wipe your hands, and it’s better not to ignore the folding table on the plane. It smells delicious, like wild berries. It does not dry out your hands, as often happens with antiseptics. Well, the format is simply fantastically convenient, no tubes from which excess always spills out. In general, our spray in the airplane cosmetic bag passed through passport control completely!

Moisturizing hand cream "O'Thermal", Uriage

The entire O'Thermal series is about hydration, and this hand cream is no exception. Attention, passengers: the cream is thick, and literally one pea will be enough for both hands. We see the cream as more compact than its counterparts, besides, it does not irritate with any fragrance and copes with what we use it for: the feeling of dryness does not return after it.

Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels Patches, Skyn Iceland

The ideal companion on a plane. The patches are absolutely dry, nothing drips from them. And if you think this is a sign that they are not working, just try them once. Even if you usually take the patches out of the refrigerator, you understand that this will not work on the plane. So, Skyn Iceland provides the required cooling, even if it was at room temperature before. The fabric fits tightly to the skin and does not run anywhere, which is also nice.

Moisturizing face mask Sesmedical, Sesderma

We like that the manufacturer advises leaving the mask on for about half an hour. As long as there are no deadlines and the kettle is boiling on the stove somewhere other than ours, we can afford it. The composition is simple and effective - hyaluronic acid and panthenol, which are necessary when the skin experiences stress such as a flight. I agree, the price for a mask is above average, but in our selection there is a budget analogue. You can try both products and compare!

Hand luggage size

Each carrier has its own rules regarding how much hand luggage you can take on board. The classic bag size that airlines usually use, 55x40x20 centimeters, is the gold standard. To fit in the overhead bin of an airplane.

Carry-on baggage sizes

In addition, airlines often allow you to take with you in excess of the norm: outerwear, a briefcase, a handbag, Duty Free goods, crutches and canes, a camera, a folding stroller, a suit, or a bouquet of flowers.
