Interview Question #30: “How long do you plan to stay with us?”

Navalny poisoning: what is known at the moment

FBK founder Alexey Navalny was urgently hospitalized in Omsk - he was taken by ambulance from the Tomsk-Moscow plane. He now remains in serious condition. His associates are sure that Navalny was poisoned.

According to Navalny’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh, Alexey came to Tomsk on a working visit. It is known that local elections are coming up in the Siberian regions in September and the politician planned to continue the practice of “smart voting.”

Yarmysh said that in the morning she met Alexey at the hotel to go to the airport, and at that moment Alexey “was completely fine.” He did not have breakfast, but drank a cup of tea in a cafe at the Tomsk airport.

On the bus from the airport building, he took a selfie with fans: in the photo, the politician smiles and looks healthy:

On the plane, according to Kira Yarmysh, Navalny said that he was not feeling well and asked for a napkin; he began to perspire. “I asked to talk to him because he wants to concentrate on the sound of his voice. I talked to him, after which a cart with water drove up to us - I asked if water would help him; he said no. After which he went to the toilet, after which he lost consciousness,” Yarmysh told Ekho Moskvy.

The plane was urgently landed in Omsk, and Navalny was taken away by ambulance. The footage taken by eyewitnesses from the portholes shows that the politician is unconscious.

Yarmysh believes that Navalny was poisoned: “We assume that he was poisoned, and it is obvious that this happened through tea.” The police and investigators are conducting checks: they are now working in the hospital, and in addition, it is known that they have already interviewed the waitress of the Tomsk cafe who prepared tea for the politician. The airport and the cafe expressed their willingness to provide surveillance camera footage to law enforcement officers.

The chief medical officer of the Omsk emergency hospital, Anatoly Kalinichenko, told reporters that the politician was in a stable and serious condition. He promised to inform about the diagnosis later, but postponed the briefing several times. The last time he promised to speak to reporters at 15:00 local time. An operational headquarters has been set up for journalists in the hospital.

A FederalPress correspondent reported from the hospital that toxicologists are working with Navalny. TASS, citing its sources, reports that investigators are not yet considering the version of poisoning. The source said that the politician allegedly could “eat or drink something himself.” However, Yarmysh, commenting on the TASS report, once again emphasized that Navalny was fine in the morning and did not show any signs of ill health.

According to media correspondents, security forces from various structures are now constantly entering the hospital building: the FSB, the Russian Guard, the police, the Investigative Committee. There is a police squad on duty outside Navalny's chamber.

According to Yarmysh, Alexey’s condition has not yet changed: he has not regained consciousness, and even his relatives are not informed of the diagnosis.

The head of emergency hospital No. 1, Kalinichenko, told reporters at an afternoon briefing that intensive therapy was being carried out and Navalny’s condition was stable. “We have made progress in diagnosing the disease. Several dozen studies of parameters of the state of the blood, the functioning of the brain, and other organs and systems have been obtained. <…> The doctors are not doing everything possible, but they are now working to save his life. I probably can’t tell you anything more.” He said that he would not be able to tell reporters the diagnosis and test results “in any case.” At the same time, he said that traumatic injuries were ruled out.

Representative of the Ministry of Health of the Omsk Region Tatyana Shakirova clarified that Navalny has not yet come to his senses.

As a FederalPress correspondent reports, Kira Yarmysh is presumably being interrogated as a witness. FBK lawyers previously reported that they would seek to initiate a criminal case for an attempt on the life of a public figure.

At the same time, TV viewers report that Navalny’s poisoning is being covered on TV: the incident is not the main news, it is reported that the “blogger” allegedly poisoned himself yesterday and, probably, on his own. “Judging by the Kremlin garbage dumps, it took them 5 hours to develop a common breakthrough version: Navalny drank or ate something himself. This, of course, is complete nonsense,” Navalny’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh emphasized.

A source of the Podem publication in Omsk medical circles said that doctors, along with other versions, do not rule out that the cause of Navalny’s serious condition could be the use of drugs with alcohol. According to this source, upon admission to the hospital, 0.2 ppm of alcohol was found in the politician’s blood.

Navalny’s personal doctor, Anastasia Vasilyeva, said that she was still not allowed to talk to the attending doctors at the Omsk hospital. She ruled out the possibility of an allergic reaction: “Alexey has never been allergic to anything. But if there is a pupillary reaction, then this is already good, usually with butyrate poisoning there is mydriasis (dilation of the pupils), I am trying to find out bit by bit the details through Kira, but obviously no conclusions can be drawn on the basis of her.” Vasilyeva has already flown to Omsk.

An NGS55 source reported this morning that doctors suspect sodium hydroxybutyrate poisoning. This is a substance that is used for anesthesia. However, experts do not consider this version probable: narcologist Erken Imanbaev, in a commentary for Kommersant, stated that in small doses sodium hydroxybutyrate would not cause a coma, and a large amount cannot be added unnoticed: this substance tastes salty. “Moreover, if he began to have a vomiting reaction to this drug, then, most likely, the vast majority of sodium hydroxybutyrate came out with the vomit, and the remnants of the substance should be completely destroyed in the body within one and a half, maximum three hours, and the person should come to his senses , back to normal,” the expert explained.

Commenting on the version of psychodysleptic poisoning, Imanbaev noted that among them there are substances that doctors cannot determine through research. “All of these modern narcotic substances are produced clandestinely, and with a slight change in the formula of this drug it is almost impossible to determine it,” said the narcologist. He explained that specialists can only isolate substances that are already in the standard database. As a result, it is possible that doctors may throw up their hands and say: “We don’t know what he was poisoned with.”

The founder of Mediazona, Pyotr Verzilov, who survived poisoning with an unknown substance in 2020, told Dozhd that his story is very similar to the situation with Navalny. “Alexey became ill about 2-3 hours after he drank tea in a coffee shop, that he lost consciousness, that there was a very sharp deterioration in his condition, that he was in a ventilator, intensive care unit... I had all these things. The only difference is that I didn’t have any opportunities to scream, for example: we heard the sounds of Alexei from the plane. But there are some basic similarities that are similar, and there are nuances that may differ. In general, we can say that yes - it’s similar to the serious poisoning that I had.”

Member of the Human Rights Council, director of information and analytical Alexander Verkhovsky told Open Media that the Human Rights Council can appeal to federal officials with a demand to take control of the situation and “not blame everything on local authorities.” “It’s difficult to accidentally poison yourself to the point of coma, and if “This is no coincidence, this is a terrorist attack,” says Vehovsky. “This cannot be hushed up.” You may not notice the crime or not solve it. There were precedents. Another question is whether it is possible to influence this somehow.”

Navalny's press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, said police are demanding a search of Navalny's personal belongings, including his luggage. According to her, they promise to announce the politician’s diagnosis “towards the evening.” Yarmysh believes that doctors are deliberately delaying with this information. FBK lawyer Lyubov Sobol also thinks: “Tests have been done, but doctors deliberately do not provide any information on Navalny.”

Therapist Yaroslav Ashikhmin, who usually sees Navalny, told Meduza that he plans to transport the oppositionist to Hannover or Strasbourg hospitals. “Now it is very important that Omsk doctors give up the patient, because with all the greatest respect, you need to understand that toxicology is a very specific field and there are very few schools that can handle a patient who is probably poisoned by some kind of toxin,” Ashikhmin said . In his opinion, doctors from Europe have a better chance of isolating a specific toxin.

Omsk Rospotrebnadzor promised, together with the prosecutor's office, to conduct an inspection in the cafe where the poisoning could have occurred.

Kira Yarmysh, meanwhile, commented on the version that is being circulated in pro-Kremlin telegram channels: “Allegedly, Navalny drank a lot last night, and today he himself took a hangover pill, which provoked the poisoning. It is not true. “He didn’t drink yesterday and didn’t take any pills today,” the politician’s press secretary emphasized. Let us remind you that Navalny does not drink alcohol at all.

“Every time well-known PR people come to the aid of unknown criminals. That is, you don’t know who did it, but it’s important for you to get them off. This is actually a confession. Almost everyone knows that Navalny is a non-drinker. If we find out who asked Mash and others to write about moonshine, we will find the poisoner,” said journalist Oleg Kashin.

It is interesting that even before Navalny’s hospitalization, the TV presenter of the Rossiya 1 TV channel, propagandist Vladimir Solovyov, in his morning broadcast, recalled Navalny’s previous poisoning. “It turns out that Navalny was poisoned last year. And I kept wondering who this reminds me of. I remembered [former Ukrainian President Viktor] Yushchenko. These were also fairy tales. Navalny is doing poorly - he was poisoned, he was poisoned, he wasn’t poisoned. No one admitted the fact of poisoning, but when necessary, they will also write this down. Think of the only case in world history when the fact of poisoning was established without examination through the door and not by anyone, but by Navalny’s ophthalmologist.”

As reported by Tyge. info head of the local headquarters of the politician Sergei Boyko, in Novosibirsk Alexey Navalny noticed that he was being followed. In Siberia, Navalny filmed an investigation about city council deputies from United Russia and met with volunteers of the Novosibirsk 2020 coalition campaign. Director of the “We Need Help” Foundation Mitya Aleshkovsky believes that Navalny’s poisoning is connected with “Smart Voting”.

Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov compared Navalny's poisoning with the assassination attempt on journalist Anna Politkovskaya. “She flew from Moscow Vnukovo airport to Rostov, because there were no longer direct flights to Beslan. At the last moment, two people boarded and sat in the business class cabin, but then no one attached much importance to it. Politkovskaya always behaved very carefully and never ate the food offered to passengers during the flight. But during that flight, it is known that she took black tea and a wet wipe from the flight attendant,” Muratov told Znak.com. “At the Rostov airport she was vomiting, she was already losing consciousness, but she managed to make two short calls to me and my deputy Sergei Sokolov. We flew to Rostov with Sokolov. The doctors managed to do the impossible - they brought Politkovskaya out of the coma. She had very low blood pressure - 40 over 20. To normalize it, on the advice of doctors, we poured practically boiling water into empty Coca-Cola bottles and covered her with these bottles.”

According to sources of the Baza telegram channel, no alcohol was found in Alexei Navalny’s blood, but there are traces of alcohol in the urine, but their amount is negligible. Navalny’s condition, according to Baza, remains stable and serious: he experienced convulsions twice. According to the source, the available data suggests that Navalny was poisoned with psychoactive substances.

The representative of the Ministry of Health of the Omsk Region, Tatyana Shakirova, told FederalPress that Navalny was not connected to the ventilator because of respiratory failure. “Unconscious, but breathing. The doctors decided to play it safe and put him on a ventilator just to help him.”

According to the Baza telegram channel, an employee of the Vienna Coffee House establishment at the Tomsk airport, where Alexei Navalny drank a cup of tea in the morning, said that she did not remember the politician and did not remember who served him tea - she herself or the barista who prepared the drink. The channel notes that the girl barista has been working in the cafe for only a month and a half. Police are already reviewing CCTV footage. Meanwhile, the coffee shop is ostracized on social networks: users leave angry comments en masse.

The chief medical officer of the Omsk emergency hospital, Anatoly Kalinichenko, held another briefing for journalists. He believes that medical care for Navalny was provided correctly from the very beginning. Intensive resuscitation measures were urgently started, the patient was examined by all specialists who might be needed for “this condition,” including surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, toxicologists, resuscitators, therapists, endocrinologists, and so on. Several consultations were carried out, a large number of studies were carried out: blood tests, including routine, general, biochemical, as well as highly specialized ones. “All sorts of ultrasound examinations were performed, several electrocardiograms and so on,” the doctor said.

Regarding the diagnosis, the doctor spoke as vaguely as possible: “And based on the results we obtained during the treatment process, of course, we change the dynamics - both the treatments and diagnoses that we talked about: some disappear (those that we thought about from the very beginning) , some diagnoses may receive their temporary, perhaps, confirmation.”

According to him, telemedicine consultations were held with federal centers and leading experts, “whose profile allows them to advise this patient.” “We are now continuing his adequate treatment. Naturally, the treatment does not end, intensive therapy continues, round-the-clock monitoring continues. <…> All available, or rather, all the research and specialists we need - they are available. The institution has everything he needs. And here we do not need any external help - other than that. Perhaps I will allow myself some cautious statements - given the condition in which he was brought to us, given the complete uncertainty of the diagnosis, the fact that we managed to stabilize him, the fact that we have now managed to have the clinical picture that we have is already good , well, let’s just say that for us this is some kind of cautious, neat, good prognostic sign. I repeat, for this minute of time. Because medicine is medicine, diseases are diseases, all people are different, and the dynamics of the course of the disease can be completely different.” The doctor refused to answer the question of whether Navalny was conscious or still in a coma. Journalists noticed that an ambulance with open doors had been standing outside the hospital building for several hours, ready to receive a patient. However, the doctor said that there are no plans to transport the politician.

As Kira Yarmysh reported, Navalny’s attending physician Anastasia Vasilyeva arrived at the Omsk hospital, but she was not allowed in without a decision from the security service, citing the fact that “this is a medical institution.” The politician’s wife Yulia Navalnaya and FBK director Ivan Zhdanov arrived on the same – closest – flight from Moscow.

Meanwhile, Yulia Navalnaya is not allowed to see Alexey because “the patient did not consent to the visit.”

Yulia Navalnaya is also here. She is also not allowed in because “the patient did not consent to the visit.” That's what they say pic.twitter.com/08vjVTcUlB

— Kira Yarmysh (@Kira_Yarmysh) August 20, 2020

A FederalPress correspondent reported that Yulia Navalnaya is required to present a marriage registration certificate. Kira Yarmysh explained that Yulia’s passport turned out to be an insufficient basis for a visit. From it “without a marriage certificate it does not follow that she is a wife.” Navalnaya is not allowed to see the chief doctor because he has a “meeting.”

The Kremlin wished Navalny a speedy recovery. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “we, in fact, also read this information.” “We know that he is in serious condition. Doctors are now doing everything that is necessary. In fact, the best doctors were recruited from Omsk. And as far as we know, also from media reports, they use telemedicine methods and hold consultations with specialists in Moscow,” he said. “Of course, like any citizen of our country, we wish him a speedy recovery,” Peskov added.

Yarmysh spoke in more detail about why Anastasia Vasilyeva is not allowed into the intensive care unit: she is required to have a doctor’s diploma and permission from the security service. “No one is allowed to see Alexei Navalny, they don’t show medical documentation. His condition is serious. We are asking for help from Ministry of Health officials and officials to obtain documentation, determine treatment tactics and the need to transfer him to Moscow or abroad,” Vasilyeva said.

Kira Yarmysh is sure that “doctors are under pressure.” According to her, doctors are intimidated and only repeat that Navalny’s condition has not changed. “Peskov comments on the situation with assurances that Alexey is being treated by the “best doctors.” I don’t know what kind of doctors are here, but this is an ordinary ambulance station, there is nowhere near the equipment necessary to study the toxins that could have poisoned Navalny,” she added.

The FederalPress publication, whose correspondent is in the hospital, reported information from a medical source. According to him, the main thing is that Navalny survives this night.

The search of Navalny’s personal belongings has begun:

Navalny’s Omsk headquarters reported that as a result of the inspection, nothing suspicious was found in the things.

The head of the FBK legal department, Vyacheslav Gimaldi, said that the Foundation’s lawyers contacted the Investigative Committee regarding the poisoning of Navalny. “We demand the initiation of a criminal case into an attack on the life of a public figure in order to stop his political activities or out of revenge for such activities (Article 277) and attempted murder (Articles 30, 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation),” Gimaldi said.

Yulia Navalnaya is now meeting with the head doctor of the hospital, the regional Ministry of Health told Meduza.

The Baza Telegram channel, citing its sources, writes that Navalny is in a deep coma. According to the Glasgow scale, his coma level was determined to be 5 points. “This is one of the critical values (4-5 points means deep coma, 15 points means clear consciousness). The preliminary diagnosis in the medical documents is as follows: “Coma of unknown origin, acute poisoning?”,” the channel reports.

Alexei Navalny has no travel restrictions, so if he needs treatment abroad, he will be able to fly out of the country without any problems, the oppositionist’s lawyer Vadim Kobzev told Open Media. According to him, Navalny currently does not have a written undertaking not to leave the country, either in the case of slander against a veteran initiated in mid-July, or in any other cases, Kobzev said. The oppositionist himself reported on Twitter on July 17 that he had signed a written undertaking not to leave the country in connection with a libel case.

At the same time, Omsk doctors told the wife of politician Yulia Navalnaya that transporting her husband in his current condition was impossible.

Kira Yarmysh reported that after the search, investigators wanted to confiscate all of Alexei’s belongings. According to her, they previously promised that they would only take away medications if they found them in the oppositionist’s belongings. As a result, lawyer Kristina Malekhina managed to ensure that the things were not confiscated.

Politician Vladimir Milov, in a special broadcast on the Navalny Life channel, suggested that his wife and personal doctor are not allowed to see Navalny for fear that they will take biomaterial from him, from which independent experts will be able to determine the toxin that poisoned the oppositionist: “They are obviously waiting until toxins will be released from the body, so that, as with many poisonings of Putin’s political opponents in recent years, it will not be possible to determine what kind of poison it was.” Lyubov Sobol also agrees with him: “Not allowing his wife to see Navalny, refusing to give medical documents to the attending physician, refusing transportation - the goal is the same: to prevent it from being established how Navalny was poisoned.”

Navalny’s personal doctor, Anastasia Vasilyeva, issued an appeal to Dmitry Peskov, who had previously announced the Kremlin’s readiness to assist in sending Navalny abroad amid closed borders. “We officially respond to the proposal and ask for assistance in providing medical documentation for Navalny’s transfer to a leading toxicology center in Europe. The chief doctor of Emergency Hospital No. 1 refuses to provide my wife, me and Ivan Zhdanov with an extract and epicrisis,” Vasilyeva wrote on Twitter.

Single pickets were held in Omsk and Tomsk in support of the politician.

According to Taiga.info, activists are preparing to hold rallies in support of Navalny in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Omsk on the evening of August 20.

Tomsk activists of Navalny’s headquarters also filed a statement with the police with a request to initiate a case under Art. 277 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attack on the life of a state or public figure). As headquarters employee Andrei Fateev told the same publication, the police interviewed him and the headquarters coordinator Ksenia Fadeeva, and during the interviews, the opposition asked the police to remove bed linen from Navalny’s hotel room - his comrades suggested that it could be poisoned.

NGS55 published a new commentary from the Omsk Ministry of Health about Navalny’s condition: “At the moment, the patient’s condition is stable, without deterioration. Artificial ventilation continues."

The regional Ministry of Health reports that after a meeting with the head physician, Yulia Navalnaya was allowed to see her husband. “We informed her about the current condition of the patient, about all the activities that have been carried out since the patient’s admission. Already during the meeting, a telemedicine consultation with two federal medical centers specializing in toxicology and resuscitation ended. Our colleagues agreed with our chosen treatment tactics. We informed Yulia Borisovna about the results of this consultation. At her request, we organized a visit to the patient in the intensive care unit in compliance with all necessary sanitary standards. His condition is stable, he is in a coma and is connected to a ventilator. Alexei Navalny’s husband was satisfied with the results of the meeting.”

Kira Yarmysh confirmed that Yulia Navalnaya was finally allowed into the ward. Documents for Alexey’s transportation are still not being given, the politician’s press secretary said.

Columnist Anton Orech believes that poisoning before boarding a plane may not be accidental. “This is a very dangerous thing. Because minutes count, and in the air, prompt assistance is simply impossible. At best, it will take at least an hour to sit down, for the ambulance to arrive, and so on. Everything has been thought out,” the analyst suggested. “It was very necessary to disable it one way or another. What else is dangerous about poisoning on an airplane? It’s a combination of factors. Different time zone, early flight, pressure changes at altitude, different blood circulation. The body can react in completely unpredictable ways!” - Nut emphasized.

FBK employee Georgy Alburov arrived at the hospital. He is not yet allowed into the building, despite having a power of attorney. Kira Yarmysh reports that the police are again trying to seize Navalny’s belongings.

The telegram channel “NEZYGAR” writes that sodium hydroxybutyrate, a cheap psychedelic drug with unpredictable consequences, was allegedly found in Navalny’s blood. The channel writes that “butyrate” is incompatible with alcohol, and Navalny allegedly drank local moonshine the day before in the village of Kaftanchikovo. Meanwhile, an expert from Kommersant previously expressed doubts that sodium hydroxybutyrate in any quantity could lead to a coma. Small amounts could only cause a change in consciousness, but in large doses the substance causes vomiting, which naturally removes toxins. In addition, if alcohol was found in the politician’s blood, it was in the form of residual traces, and sodium hydroxybutyrate is very quickly eliminated from the body. In other words, if Navalny had been poisoned by “butyrate,” then for dangerous consequences to occur he would have had to consume alcohol at the same time as a psychedelic drug: as you know, he definitely didn’t drink in the morning, and if he drank yesterday, then the consequences of the dangerous combination would have occurred immediately, and not a few hours later.

Press secretary of the Doctors' Alliance trade union Irina Kvasko said that the plane to transport Alexei Navalny is already ready, and there is also an agreement with a European clinic on the examination and treatment of Alexey. However, Omsk doctors refuse to hand over his medical documents and give permission for transportation.

The situation with Navalny was commented on by ex-NSA employee Edward Snowden, who now lives in Moscow: “The most famous Russian opposition leader Navalny was taken to the hospital and was reported to be suspected of poisoning. If the information is confirmed, this is a crime against all of Russia. There can be no democracy without dissent.”

Russia's most famous opposition leader, @Navalny, has been rushed to the hospital, with reports that poison is suspected. If confirmed, it is a crime against the whole of Russia. There can be no democracy without dissent.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) August 20, 2020

The Baza Telegram channel reports that doctors confirmed the diagnosis of “toxic effects predominantly at the synaptic level.” However, after a number of tests, according to the channel’s sources, they were unable to identify the toxic substance. “We can already say for sure that this is not poisoning with hydroxybutyrate, barbiturates or azaleptin,” says Baza. According to the channel, Alexey developed cerebral edema.

People waiting for news at the Omsk hospital disperse. Relatives of Alexei Navalny also left the hospital.
