To ensure that it is your lenses that are red and not your eyes, when wearing them you need to follow simple rules for safe lens wearing.

  • Be sure to wash your hands before putting on or removing lenses.
  • When wearing contacts, never rub your eyes with your hands.
  • Put your lenses on before applying makeup and remove them before removing your makeup.
  • Do not use lenses in the pool or sauna.
  • Use reusable lens containers and solution.
  • Pour the solution into the container until it completely covers the lens to prevent the lens from drying out and hardening. If this has already happened, do not try to soften it and use it again, it has already become unusable.
  • If the lens becomes dirty, be sure to clean it with a multifunctional solution and only then put it in a container.
  • Do not use plain water for cleaning or storage.
  • Do not use eye drops if you are already wearing contact lenses. Place medications in your eyes before putting on or after removing your lenses.
  • It is not recommended to wear lenses in a smoky room. If you smoke, be careful not to let smoke get into your eyes.
  • Only use lenses with an active expiration date.
  • Follow the terms of wearing lenses stated by their manufacturers. For hydrogel it is 8-10 hours, and for silicone hydrogel it is 24 hours.
  • Do not keep lenses in direct sunlight or in temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius.
  • Do not use lenses during viral diseases - ARVI, influenza and others. Viruses can get into the tear fluid and cause conjunctivitis or other eye diseases.
  • If there is severe discomfort, redness of the eyes or other inconveniences, remove the lenses and visit an ophthalmologist.
  • If your lenses are worn for two weeks or more, then use containers and a special solution for storing lenses.

Special contacts with diopters

As mentioned above, if you need red corrective lenses, then your choice will not be large and you may have to try to find the right ones for you.

However, the industry has already responded to the demand and is making such lenses. The only thing is that their price can be significantly higher than decorative ones.

Simple colored

Important. Decorative red lenses can be simply plain or colored with an unusual pattern on the cornea. Other colors can also be added to red.

Red lenses can come in thousands of shades, choose from black-red, dark red, bright red or crimson if you have brown eyes. This way the look will be spectacular and suitable, for example, for the style of a vamp woman.

If your natural eye color is light, then you can use the entire palette of red lenses to suit your taste.

With color completely on the entire protein

So-called scleral red lenses, which completely cover the entire visible part of the eye. Such lenses visually enlarge the eyes and give the image an ominous touch. For example, the manufacturer of South Korea 2 makes red lenses with an optical effect that enlarges the eyes, making them look like those of anime cartoon characters.

Types of black lenses

Black lenses differ in a certain composition and diameter, which will determine the result produced by them.

The types of black lenses are:

  1. Covering the entire cornea, i.e. black lenses for the entire eye, with a diameter of 20-24 mm. They are classified by the small coefficient of contact between the rear sphere and the shell.
  2. Mini-scleral - with their help you can achieve the phenomenon of contrasting cornea. The lens does not completely cover the entire surface, but only the front area of the white membrane of the eye. The diameter of such a lens is 18 mm.
  3. Semi-scleral (corneoscleral) - in volume they are something between types 1-2, the diameter varies between 13-15 mm, occupies both the cornea and the scleral area.

    Scleral and mini-scleral lenses

In addition, there are solid lenses that do not have a pupil. The creators produce them in white and gray colors, reminiscent of the effect of a cataract. This attribute can be purchased by ordering online. But it is advised to be mentally prepared for their use. By covering the pupil with this tint, the wearer is practically left in the dark. For people with good vision, such a sudden change can confuse, frighten or disrupt the psyche. Therefore, this option is for the brave!

What are they made from?

They produce decorative black silicone hydrogel contact lenses in which silicone allows oxygen to pass through well, which allows the cornea to breathe freely under the lens.

The higher the oxygen permeability coefficient of the lenses, the safer they are to use.

Silicone hydrogel is resistant to low temperatures, so they can be used even in cold weather. However, in conditions of high temperature and humidity (for example, in a sauna), it is better not to wear black scleral lenses : actively secreted tear fluid provokes rapid swelling of the eye tissues.

Cheap Chinese analogues are made from a polymer composition with a minimal amount of silicone. It is not safe to wear such lenses: their level of gas permeability is very low. Long-term wearing of Chinese black lenses can lead to problems such as:

  • development of corneal hypoxia;
  • corneal edema;
  • ingrowth of blood vessels into the sclera.

Adding hydrogel to the material for black lenses makes them flexible and provides comfortable fixation on the cornea.

No matter how high the gas permeability of black lens material is, it should be understood that they cannot be completely harmless. Decorative black lenses should only be used when necessary to achieve a theatrical effect, such as theme parties, film sets, etc.

How are black lenses made?

Hollywood actors, who have to wear black lenses over their entire eyes for a long time for filming, use only custom-made optics, when the lenses are made directly to the shape of the eye. The manufacturing process of such lenses can take several months, as it includes several stages:

  • measurement of cornea parameters;
  • production of a set of lenses that will be adjusted (prototype);
  • testing of the prototype by the owner. The patient wears trial clear lenses for several weeks, and the manufacturer's optometrist observes the results and makes the necessary adjustments to shape, size, thickness, etc.
  • final fitting. Only after the final check the lens is painted black and is completely ready for use.

Lenses that are not made to order, that is, using the conveyor method, are not only less comfortable to wear, but also dangerous. They do not adjust to the size of the cornea. Their inner surface may not fit tightly to the cornea or, conversely, prevent it from breathing. Being, in fact, a foreign body for the protein shell, factory black lenses can cause the following troubles:

  • oxygen starvation of tissues (cause if it fits too tightly to the sclera). This leads to the destruction of blood vessels, and, as a result, to decreased vision;
  • slip off the surface of the eye, scratching it (if the fit is insufficient).

Which eye lenses are best to choose is written here.

Any damage to the integrity of the white membrane of the eye facilitates the penetration of various infections.

So black lenses, a seemingly harmless accessory, can seriously harm your eyesight. Therefore, before using black lenses over the entire eye, think about whether it’s worth it? If you can’t afford custom-made black lenses, then choose lenses in a store only after consulting with an ophthalmologist, who will determine the exact parameters of the cornea and sclera. In addition, there are cases when wearing decorative lenses is not recommended for individual medical reasons. This may be high sensitivity of the cornea or low transparency.

What are they for?

The peculiar, terrifying black eyes of a demon can be selected by a person for professional purposes, simply out of desire to stand out from others, or for medical reasons.

Black contact lenses can be chosen for the following purposes:

  • as a profession - used for filming, photo shoots, theatrical performances; such images are required in movies, music videos, etc.;
  • informal movements with an unusual look of clothes, shoes, stylish hairstyle, makeup; since nowadays tattoos, piercings are fashionable, young people choose a similar accessory - black lenses;
  • the appearance of a ghost, a monster – Halloween is considered an interesting holiday for young people; it is possible to transform your appearance with the help of scleral lenses;
  • a dark image is used to eliminate defects or for correction; for example, in the presence of a cataract or lack of an iris.

Some people actively use black sclera for carnivals and parties. However, it is not advisable to wear them daily; you can wear them no more than once every 7 days.
