Is it possible to give my husband a wristwatch and how to choose the right one?

Where does the superstition that you can’t give a watch come from?

There are two main versions that are generally considered true.

Western

In Western traditions, arrows are usually equated with pointed objects, which means that they already fall into the category of those gifts that are undesirable to give, such as forks, knives and scissors, as well as other cutting and stabbing objects.
It is generally accepted that such gifts tend to attract unclean forces, which at the moment of giving become attached to the recipient. Subsequently, this will lead either to some kind of misfortune or very big quarrels with the donor, sometimes even to a complete and final break in the relationship. It is also customary to say about pointed objects that they can “cut happiness and friendship.”

Eastern

The second common reason why watches are not given as gifts came to us from distant China. They have long had the opinion that a watch is a kind of invitation to a funeral. Yes, it’s a rather strange sign, but it’s generally difficult for us, fellow Slavs, to understand Western culture.

There are many interpretations of this superstition. Some people think that the clock is counting down the time until separation, and as soon as the birthday gift clock stops, you will part with the person forever. And some are even sure that they are counting down the time until the death of the donee and thus pose a direct threat to the life of the donee. In general, the omen is creepy.

Slavic

The Slavs have their own concept of this sign. According to legend, when you give a watch, you also bring pain, emptiness, and disappointment to the person with this gift. Some people think that by giving a watch, you are giving away part of your life. Often such a gift is called a quarrel between lovers, and some believe that the death of the recipient is approaching.

Option for the superstitious

Not everyone is ready to give up prejudices, since they have already been instilled by their grandparents and aunties on a psychological level. The majority of the population is firmly convinced of this belief, especially people over 25 years of age, and it is quite difficult for them to reconsider their views.

But you can give a gift correctly so that you forget about superstition and still have a good impression of the gift. At the time of donation, it is enough to take a penny of any denomination from the recipient. We can assume that with such a “barter” the watch becomes not a gift, but an acquisition. Even a person who believes in superstitions will be happy.

Why can't you give watches to your loved ones?

There are many stories among people about how people gave watches to their significant other and then reaped the bitter consequences.

There was even a story about a couple in which the girl wanted to give her lover a watch, and before that they had never quarreled, but after such a gift, quarrels began. True, their love turned out to be much stronger and the omen ceased to have power: the hand on the clock fell off, and the second hand soon stopped forever.

Although who knows, perhaps the product was simply of poor quality?

Bracelet or strap

How it will look on the hand depends on which mechanism will fix the watch on the hand. Like the case, straps can be made from a variety of materials:

  1. Textile.
  2. Leather.
  3. Metals.
  4. Silicone.

The most popular straps are those made from leather. Textile options are not suitable for every style; metal models significantly increase the cost of the product and make it heavier, but they last much longer and look more attractive.

Who else should you not give a watch to?

It is best to remember that it is better not to give a watch to anyone on their birthday.

Whether you trust omens or not, it’s better not to give such a gift to your girlfriend. It is no secret that women are more superstitious, so such a gift can offend them or simply ruin their mood, which will be very inappropriate if the reason for the gift was her birthday.

Many people, after turning over 14, begin to get upset over many trifles on this seemingly festive day. Surely among your friends there are those who look dejected on their own birthday. So, many of them feel like the clock is ticking and time is running out.

And the older the recipient, the greater the chance that on his birthday he will think about old age and the transience of life and time in general, so you should not give a watch, or rather, another reason for grief.

By the way, many superstitions about the clock that count down the recipient’s remaining age are associated with the birthday. You should not give such a gift to sick or elderly people.

Believe not believe signs about watches

Many peoples perceive a gift - a watch to a loved one, in different ways:

  • The Slavs perceive it as separation or a break in relations.
  • Chinese signs see in the clock a wish for a person to leave this life as soon as possible.
  • Many tribes are afraid of watches, as they consider them to be an object that has witchcraft powers and can greatly change their lives. Even if the gift given does not have such a message, many people perceive everything exactly like that.
  • Moreover, there are countries that think differently. For example, in the USA it is customary for newlyweds to exchange gold watches on their wedding day so that their family life will be eternal.
  • Among Muslims, the item is considered a good wedding gift, but it must be a wall clock, made of wood and decorated with precious stones.
  • And one more paradox - the British are considered the most superstitious people, but they usually call this item a welcome surprise. It is considered an heirloom in many families and is passed down from generation to generation.

Therefore, we ourselves choose what to believe.

What to do if you were given a watch?

So, we understand the root reason why you can’t give a watch.
Now you will think more than once about whether it is worth giving such a gift to someone you know. But what to do if such a gift was given to you?

Firstly, remember that not all people believe in omens, but some, like you, know that you cannot give a watch as a gift. It is likely that the person has not heard of omens, so one should not blame him for all sins.

It is important to remember that it is not the gift itself that is important, but the attention.

If a person wanted to please you and tried to find a beautiful and at the same time practical gift that you would not throw on a distant shelf. Most people are quite sensitive to this ritual of gifting. Even a shadow of doubt about accepting a gift can greatly upset a person, so accept his gift with a smile and thank him for it from the bottom of your heart.

And secondly, in the signs with such a gift, nothing is said about the purchase, which means that you can redeem the gift. Nobody says that you will have to pay the entire amount for a gift; you can even give a symbolic fee, even 10 kopecks.

Many people think that the higher the ransom, the better it is, and they try to redeem the gift with paper bills, but it’s better not to do that. If, when giving a gift in the form of a watch, you want to pay the ransom, then it is better to do it with coins.

Take a handful of coins without counting them and give them to the person when you accept the gift. And a large-scale buyout in itself will look strange, because this way the fact of donation will simply be reduced to nothing. Instead, show how grateful you are through your hospitality and delicious food.

Who can you give a watch to?

In fact, signs do not have any scientific basis, so if a person is superstitious, then any “forbidden” gift can spoil his mood and provoke a placebo effect, which entails a number of coincidences with a bad outcome. If a person does not believe in omens, then it is unlikely that anything will happen to him after receiving a gift.

You can safely give watches as a gift to those who collect them . Such people will definitely be delighted with gifts, but they most likely do not believe in omens.

In addition to all this, you can give a watch
to your husband, boss, brother and father .
Most likely, you have heard more than once about officer watches, which are given to military personnel for their services to the Motherland. Many people have dreamed of something like this since childhood, but never got it. You can buy such a watch yourself, but this cannot be compared with if a man received it as a gift. And if you spare no expense and also order a personal engraving, then such a gift will have no price.

Be that as it may, try to think less about bad things and don’t be afraid to give watches to others. If a watch given to you scares you, then give a few coins to the donor. If this doesn't help, it's better to get rid of them.

Do not under any circumstances throw away the gifted watch, but simply give it to someone else.

However, you can sell it for the same symbolic ransom . Just don’t forget that a gift is a sign of care, love and all the good things, because it will be unpleasant for a person to find out that you didn’t like this gift.

Note about donating wall clocks

The sign of giving a wall clock is an old belief. Some believe that a piece of the master’s soul is present in the watch. And they symbolize the passage of time. When life stops after stopping. Apparently this faith has been alive since the times when they were made by hand. But, to this day, they avoid giving watches as a gift.

Others, answering the question: “Is it possible to give a wall clock?” are guided by signs that their hidden meaning is the termination of any relationship. Stopping the wall mechanism is also associated with death. People in Asia are especially careful when giving a watch as a gift. Where giving them to someone means it's time to die. Especially when this gift concerns older people and newlyweds.

Today, people prefer to look at their mobile phones to check the time. This may not be a good idea if you are planning to gift the watch to your friends, parents or anyone. But there is also a superstitious ritual when a coin is returned for a donated watch. Thus, they “buy” the thing rather than receive it as a gift. Which removes a number of negative consequences. To the question “Is it possible to give a wall clock?”, the signs answer “no”. But at the same time, they suggest a way around failure. The decision is yours: to believe or not, to give or to abstain.

Popular brands

An important factor is the brand under which the watch is produced. There is simply a huge number of companies that produce wristwatches. Depends on the brand:

  1. Cost of hours. Well-known brands significantly increase the cost of their products, which is associated with popularity.
  2. Build quality. Some manufacturers assemble their products manually, which significantly increases their cost.
  3. Reliability and functionality of the mechanism used during assembly.
  4. The significance of the gift (if a woman is passionate about watches and knows which brands are popular).

In addition, some brands support a certain style when creating watches. Thus, Calvin Klein and Guess strive for minimalism when releasing their products, while others, on the contrary, release unusual models that immediately catch the eye.

What models are in fashion

Every year, an increasing number of different models of women's watches appear. At the same time, no specific trend is visible, since this accessory can be matched to a wide variety of outfits. When considering style, let’s pay attention to the following points:

  1. Drawing. Very often, models for women have different patterns on the dial, which can be bright and attractive or discreet. Designers can decorate the dial in a variety of ways: depict animals, apply graffiti, a world map, silhouettes of famous people’s faces, and so on. It is worth considering that for most women, a watch is also a functional accessory. Therefore, applied images should not impair the readability of information.
  2. Unusual shapes. The case of a wristwatch can be of various shapes. A classic circle or rectangle with beveled edges is common today, but there are also more interesting proposals: snake shapes, pendants, bracelets, rings, and so on. It is recommended to give preference to more common forms, as they suit a variety of looks.
  3. Use of bright colors. Almost every woman strives to attract attention. That is why they pay attention to watch models that have bright colors. It is worth considering that in most cases the case and strap have the same color. Models often chosen are coral, blue, purple or pink.
  4. Sport style. A separate category includes models designed for sports. They are characterized by a large number of different functions that are useful when playing sports. A variety of materials can be used in the manufacture of such models. Let us note smart watches, which are very popular today. They simply have a huge number of different sensors, due to which all the information is collected.

In general, we can say that in most cases they choose classic models that are suitable for everyday use. More original designs may not be to your taste, and the gift will simply be useless.
