However, in order to look perfect, it is simply inconvenient to use the services of a makeup artist and cosmetologist every day, so we somehow have to deal with cosmetics ourselves. This raises a lot of questions: how to choose the right cosmetic and care products for yourself, how to apply them correctly to achieve maximum results, how not to make a mistake in the store?
Sales consultants, of course, in most cases are very qualified, but do not forget that their main task is to sell as much product as possible, therefore, while helping you with your choice, they can also offer a ton of multi-colored tubes, skillfully juggling terms. At the same time, I’m sure that in the store the shelves with cosmetics are enchanted by fairy consultants: when you stop near the bronzers, highlighters with shimmers, you forget about everything, your head easily spins and your hands naturally reach for your wallet, and the realization of what happened only comes at home.
Today we will try to understand a little what exactly those numerous and incomprehensible words mean, which are actively used not only by sales consultants, but also by makeup artists, as well as beauty bloggers, in order to be armed with information when glancing at the name of some cosmetic product. product or reading the label.
I would like to draw attention to the fact that most of the terms are of foreign origin and have firmly established themselves in the vocabulary of not only specialists, but also amateurs.
Bronzer (or bronzer) (bronzer)
- a product to give the skin a light tan or highlight it. Bronzers are produced in the form of sticks, compact, liquid, meteorites. Bronzers always contain small reflective particles - shimmer, to give the face a slight radiant effect.
Luminizer
is
almost the same as bronzer, only in light shades. This cosmetic product is created to highlight and emphasize certain areas of the face, giving the skin radiance without having an independent tint. Luminizers can be produced in the form of powder, twist-on stick or cream.
As a rule, protruding areas of the face are highlighted with a luminizer - under the eyebrow, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and so on. Makeup artists usually call all luminizers or products with reflective particles “sparkles.”
Highlighter
is
the second name for luminizer. But sometimes companies produce highlighters without reflective particles and they are used mainly for sculpting (modeling) the face, when the shape of the face needs a slight correction to hide minor flaws and emphasize advantages.
Kajal –
huge eyeliner. Kajal differs from ordinary eye pencils in its high pigmentation, greater softness and durability. Kayal can be white, beige or classic jet black. Usually, only the lower eyelid is applied with kajal, since it is too soft for other manipulations.
An interesting fact is that kajal is essentially one of the oldest cosmetics and is translated from one of the most ancient languages as “cosmetics”. The composition of antique kayals, which were stored in special containers and were powdered, included many minerals, coloring and antiseptic substances. Beautiful Egyptian women, whose images excite the imagination, lined their eyes with kajal and antimony. There was no carcass in those days.
Liner
– since I mentioned eye makeup. Liners are usually called any means that can be used to draw beautiful arrows or line the eyelid. There are liquid ones, in bottles with a brush, felt-tip pens or gel ones. Gel liners are very thick, but the most durable and you need to buy them with a special brush.
Pigments
are
loose powdery cosmetics, usually used as eye shadow. They come with or without shimmer, but the distinctive feature of the pigments is the color - as a rule, they are very rich and varied. Produced by professional cosmetic brands. By the way, with the help of pigment you can turn any ordinary lipstick into matte and very bright, simply by applying a small amount on top.
Curler –
This is no longer a means, but a device for curling eyelashes. They can be mechanical and even heated, just like hair curlers!
Concealer -
highly pigmented product for masking skin imperfections. Concealers are usually applied pointwise, only to problem areas (redness, pimples, dark circles under the eyes). They have the same range of shades as foundations, but unlike the latter they are sold in convenient small packages, since they are not consumed in large quantities and are not applied to the entire face. They come in the form of twist-out sticks, pencils, creamy ones, or in convenient packages with a brush at the end. The latter are convenient if you need to refresh your makeup during the day. Apply both under foundation and on top of it - whichever is more convenient for you.
Meteorites –
powder in balls with reflective particles, the balls are usually multi-colored, but do not give a clear shade, rather a shine.
Released by a well-known company, it has literally become a cult toy for all makeup lovers. Meteorites are consumed very economically due to their shape - highly compressed balls. Covers the face with a thin, imperceptible veil, does not give any specific color, rather a radiance effect, but still this product is closer to a highlighter (luminizer) or bronzer (if the balls in the jar are not light, but brown shades).
Primer
is
a base, a makeup product that can be called magical. Performs several functions at the same time - evens out the surface of the skin, even restructures it, hiding enlarged pores, and also does an excellent job of ensuring that makeup lasts as long as possible. Primers are mainly in cream or gel form and contain silicone particles.
Lip primers prevent the lipstick from spreading, the eyeshadow base prevents them from crumbling and makes the shade richer, and the mascara primer adds volume and length to the eyelashes.
Transparent powder (Transparent Powder or
HD powder ) -
transparent powder, loose or compact. Transparent powders in packages appear white, but when applied they are weightless and do not give any color, so their main function is to even out, mattify and fix makeup.
Makeup fixer

Glitter
and shimmer.
In the usual sense of the word, these are sparkles. Glitter is usually large, of different shapes, and is usually added to nail polishes that are part of limited holiday collections. Shimmer is very small sparkles or even reflective particles and belongs more to cosmetics than to nail polishes. They are included in lipsticks, eye shadows, bronzers, highlighters... everything that you can call pearlescent contains exactly that - shimmer. There are even body lotions with shimmer to give your skin a beautiful glow.
If we abstract from decorative cosmetics, then many incomprehensible terms can also be found among skin care products.
Serum –
This is a cosmetic serum or concentrate. Previously, it was used only by cosmetologists, but now serums can be bought and used independently, thanks to developing cosmetology.
The serum contains ten times more active biological substances than conventional products, so it works much more effectively. Rejuvenates, moisturizes and balances skin function. A wonderful tool. It is usually sold in glass jars; if it is a fluid, it has a convenient dispenser; it can also be creamy.
Micellar water
is
colorless and odorless, like regular water, but has powerful cleansing properties because it contains micelles - fatty acid molecules .
You can use micellar water in the same way as a regular makeup remover or skin cleanser.
Hydrophilic oil
- a makeup remover with the effect of deep and high-quality cleansing of the skin, however, not everyone has this property; this is usually indicated on the label (Makeup cleansing oil - just makeup remover, Deep cleansing oil - also cleanses pores). Typically, hydrophilic oils, when in contact with water, become a kind of makeup remover milk.
Hyaluronic acid
- an important structural element of human skin, in the form of a cosmetic product it acts as a powerful moisturizer. Often included in serums, creams and fluids. You can, for example, buy it separately and add it to your favorite cream to enhance the effect.
Filler
– literally – filler. As an alternative to beauty injections, thanks to which specialists achieve a second-by-second effect of smoothing out wrinkles, a huge number of filler creams have appeared on the market. These creams contain collagen and hyaluronic acid, which have an immediate effect on the skin and transform it.
Parabens
- These are complex chemical substances that act as preservatives - suppressive of bacterial growth.
There is an opinion that parabens are harmful and one should be wary of their content in cosmetics, but these substances are allowed for use in clearly defined proportions, ensuring long-term storage of cosmetics without compromising their properties. In addition, parabens are very well tolerated by the body and almost never cause allergies .
Silicones
– synthetic fats that protect skin and hair from the adverse effects of external factors. There is a lot of controversy surrounding silicones as to whether they are so harmful when used in cosmetics and hair care products. As it turned out, silicone molecules are too large to penetrate into skin or hair tissue, so there is no harm.
Today, incomprehensible slang can be found in any field. But now we can easily distinguish glitter from primer and read any label!
