Soviet perfumery: New Year and Happy New Year
In addition to “Winter,” the “Winter Fantasy” set (aka “New Year’s set”) also included “New Year” and “Happy New Year” perfumes. Their names don’t even hint, but literally say what these fragrances are intended for: for the main winter holiday.
In the late USSR, the New Year tradition was reduced to a large family and friendly feast on the night from December 31 to January 1 and a series of children's Christmas trees during the winter school holidays. But in the 1960s, when the scents from the “Winter Fantasy” set were created, the holiday looked different, it was more social in nature: not only children, but also older youth attended Christmas trees, and even adults took part in New Year’s balls and masquerades. There were also festive concerts and New Year's performances in theaters and circuses. In short, in December and January, women had plenty of reasons to dress up and put on perfume. However, neither too sexy, nor too formal, nor extravagant perfumes were suitable for these informal social events. In general, choosing a fragrance for a situation where there are a lot of people around and their rather close physical contact is implied (for example, dancing) is a difficult matter. It would be possible, of course, not to use perfume at all, but many women feel without perfume almost like without a dress. Therefore, the perfumers of New Dawn tried to create a kind of perfume lifesaver especially for the New Year.
We needed something light that wouldn’t give our partner a headache during the dance and that wouldn’t distract people in the neighboring chairs at the concert. Something that will not conflict with the delicious smells of the festive table. And it is also desirable that it does not create a perfume cacophony, merging with the perfumes of other women and the pine-tree spirit. Well, of course, so that it carries a positive charge - it’s a holiday after all. In general, ideally, New Year's perfume should create the right mood, even if other attributes of the New Year include snow and frosty patterns on the windows. Therefore, both “New Year’s” and “Happy New Year” contain everything that people with a Soviet past firmly associate with a successful New Year: pine needles, tangerines, champagne, powder, hot skin, a little cold air and that universal note , which awaits us at the entrance to any perfume store or to a room in which exclusively elegant women have gathered. The sound of these two scents is very similar, only “Happy New Year” is sweet, warm and bright, while “New Year’s” is cool, calm and with noticeable sourness.

Moreover, they do not lose their sound even in the cold - if suddenly, in a cheerful frenzy, you want to roll around in the snow or ride down a hill. In a word, a real New Year. “New Year’s” was produced only in miniature format, but “Happy New Year” also had a large bottle with a ground-in lid. Nothing pretentious or overly festive: a simple rectangle is decorated with raised matte stripes - like frost on electrical wires. A wonderful themed gift! But I think that women preferred to buy miniatures “for themselves,” because it was convenient to carry them with them in an evening bag and “refresh” the scent as needed. In addition, the volume of the miniature with intensive use was enough just for the New Year holidays - in fact, you won’t smell like a Christmas tree and tangerines for the rest of the year. At Novaya Zarya they quickly took note of this, and the large bottle was discontinued by the early 1970s, but miniatures were produced until the mid-1980s.
Few people now remember the scents from the “Winter Fantasy” set, but judging by how rarely they can be found on the vintage market, at one time they were in deserved demand.
