Renata Litvinova: “I am attracted to bright people. And not only men..."

Renata Litvinova.
Photo: Dmitry Dubinsky The cult actress, screenwriter, director, TV presenter (and all rolled into one) Renata Litvinova is a special phenomenon in Russian culture. Some consider her cutesy, some consider her crazy, but most do not dispute Renata’s talents or her unique charm...

And there have long been rumors about her incredibly close creative union with an equally famous Russian star - singer, poet and composer Zemfira Ramazanova. These days, the media is full of news that Renata allegedly settled with Zemfira in a recently acquired house on the shores of Lake Geneva. They enjoy working together on new projects and relaxing. This is where I would stop. Both Renata and Zemfira are interesting, first of all, for their creativity. And jointly – first of all.

It was Renata who first asked Zemfira to write music for a movie when she was filming her first full-length feature film, “Goddess, How I Loved You” (2004), in which she was both a director, a screenwriter, a producer, and an actress. At that time, I interviewed Renata, which concerned her personal life, creative aspirations, and work with the same Zemfira.

— You also involved Zemfira in working on “Goddess.” How was it working with her?

“She wrote and sang an absolutely brilliant song. Her contribution to the film is absolutely enormous. She is a very noble, very kind person.

Zemfira introduced me to a wonderful composer who wrote the music for the film. This is Igor Vdovin from St. Petersburg.

— In Riga, your film was announced like this: “Goddess” is represented by the divine Renata Litvinova...” Do you often hear such epithets addressed to you and how do you feel about them? “It seems to me that we are all divine, we are all children of God.” If you apply this in a pompous way... I will accept it from a religious point of view. Okay, I agree to be from God, otherwise they say - the devil. It's better to be divine.

— You often act in many guises: director, screenwriter, actress... — Circumstances just develop in such a way that you begin to take everything into your own hands. I have already said this more than once: if you want something to happen, then you take on one thing, and the second, and the third - otherwise nothing will happen, the film will not be made, some problems will arise.

... And then Renata wanted to make a film about Zemfira. And she even did it twice. For the first time - in 2008, when she shot the musical concert film “Green Theater in Zemfira” - a full-length film woven from video footage of the singer’s concert in the “Green Theater” in Moscow’s Gorky Park. And two years later, when she directed another film “Moscow. Crocus/Strelka" - video from two Moscow concerts of your favorite singer.

And two years later, in 2012, they worked together again, but on the full-length film “Rita’s Last Fairy Tale”: a fantasy, drama and detective story at the same time. Renata took pictures with two professional cameras and with her own money. Zemfira wrote the music for free, actress Tatyana Drubich refused the fee... And the film, like almost everything Renata does, is full of mysticism and reflections on life and death...

And from working with the famous director Adolf Shapiro, Renata began another life - a theatrical one. The first production took place at the Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov. And immediately Ranevskaya in Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” (2004).

— How did you get into this performance? — I was invited by director Adolf Shapiro. I know that he had an amazing theater for young spectators in Riga, which for some reason was closed. Shapiro is an absolutely outstanding director. — How did you get comfortable on the theater stage? Was this the first time in your life? - Actually, I'm very interested. I love some kind of experiments. At first I was very doubtful, but the further the rehearsals went, the more and more interesting I became. Either I'll embarrass myself or not! I’ve already had failures or semi-failures, when everyone thought that nothing had happened, but I thought: what a nightmare!

Failures, which I won’t mention, give you a lot; they set you up in the right place in life. It seems to me that if you don’t fail, you won’t take off. You need to be able to extract positives from the negatives. Failures have healing properties.

...Following “The Cherry Orchard” was a role in the play “Step” (2010) based on the play by Marguerite Duras, directed by the guest Frenchwoman Marie-Louise Bischofberger. Then another role on the stage of the same Tabakovsky Moscow Art Theater - in the play based on Agatha Christie’s detective story “Witness for the Prosecution” (2012) directed by Marie-Louise, who liked Litvinova’s unusual style of acting.

However, Litvinova met the artistic director of the theater in which she played on stage that same year on the set of Kira Muratova’s comedy “Eternal Return,” which is quite surprising for Muratova, who usually shoots dramatic films. The director once again invited her favorite actress to her film, as well as Oleg Tabakov, Alla Demidova, Sergei Makovetsky...

— Renata, aren’t you afraid of seeming funny?

— If an actor is given the gift of being funny, this is one of the most honorable gifts in the acting profession.

— You starred with Peter Greenaway in the Russian part of his film “Tulse Luper’s Suitcases.” How do you like this experience of working with a well-known director in the West?

“When I arrived for the shoot, I didn’t even know that my monologues would be gigantic – six sheets long. The producers gave them to me on the eve of filming. And other actresses had several phrases. When I asked why they didn’t give me monologues earlier, they told me that they didn’t give it to anyone, because the other artists might be offended and not go. Therefore, I practically did not sleep there and studied these texts. And Peter filmed everything in one piece!

- Cinema, theater, television... Where else are you invited? — Sometimes completely crazy projects arise.
For example, star in a kefir commercial. Or one day my friend Timur, a very good director, calls me and so intriguingly (and at this moment I’m talking with the great director Kira Muratova) he tells me: you know, there’s such a cool idea, we need to joke around, we’ve already shot an advertisement, you you just need to voice the herring's voice. I thought he was joking. He continues: can you imagine, there is such a herring lying there, and then their head is torn off, but she smiles because she sees her favorite mayonnaise. Then, when the next day they called me and asked how much I wanted for this advertisement, I was even offended... - You had a program about style on NTV. (Renata is currently talking about stylish shoes on the Culture channel). Is this the TV people's idea? You easily agreed to tell millions of women about what they should wear, what is the responsibility?.. - Well, I’m telling you irresponsibly, and I’m saying that these are my crazy tips. If you want, follow, if you want, don’t. The main thing is not to be afraid to be different from anyone, not to be ashamed to be who you are. And if you want to do something, why put yourself in some kind of framework: look at these moronic magazines, where everyone is dressed the same and looks the same. And if I say some texts in the program, then I do it sincerely and from the heart. — Do you edit them somehow? - No. They edit me during editing. Of course, I don’t do this myself – I don’t have time. - Let's return to love again - and not only in the movies. Do your daughter and husband have enough love? (At that time they were all still together) - I had come to such a state that for me communicating with friends is some kind of luxury. Because any time taken away means that it is stolen from my family. Of course, if you choose between a husband and a child, the husband suffers more. Because if I have time, I, of course, give it to the child. But sometimes it happens that if my husband intercepts me in the editing room, then he won’t let me go anywhere...

— Who does your daughter Ulyana stay with? - We have a nanny and grandmothers. - Renata, you said that you were in love. What attracts you to a man, first of all? “I’m attracted to rings in a man,” Renata flirts. - You have a beautiful ring. And a tie clip...

Of course, I am attracted by individuality, talent, kindness. First of all, bright people are attracted. And not only men, but also women, of course, must be original. - Renata, you probably know that your manners irritate some people... - Well, I can help it. Let them not communicate with me, or if they don’t like what I do on television or in the movies, let them not watch. They can just click a button. Although some people look specifically to say: of course, she’s disgusting. — Is this, in particular, about when you took a bath while filming the program? - And this too. By the way, when I decided to get into the bathtub, I thought: God, there’s a camera in there. But it was too late to retreat - we came up with Cleopatra’s bath. We bought six bags of milk, then decided to put some crushed algae in there. Then they bought me salt. And more oil pellets. So we couldn’t clean the bathtub afterwards. I myself too...
