What to do before cutting your hair at home yourself? How often does any girl who is determined to try to change her image on her own ask herself this question? Naturally, you can enroll in specialized courses. But, if you do not strive to become a professional stylist and work in a hairdressing salon, then there is no need for such activities. Moreover, visiting them will require additional funds and, of course, free time, and we just want to save all this.
You can study at home on your own, the main thing is to have the desire, be patient, and the result will not take long to arrive.
Before you cut your hair at home, you should know what tools to buy, how best to equip your work space and prepare your hair, and be sure to consider all the positive and negative aspects of this procedure. So, let's begin.
What tools may be needed
You will need:
- Scissors. They are easy to find at a beauty supply store. For the basic haircut, scissors are used that have a special lever for the little finger and a blade 6-8 centimeters long. The shorter the blade, the easier it is to control the cutting process. There are also thinning scissors that have serrations on one or both blades. They are used to give the hair extra volume. The main thing to remember is that it is not recommended to use office or household scissors; they damage the hair, turning its ends into fringes.
- Combs. The main comb has fine teeth and a sharp tip. It is used to separate strands, create partings, for backcombing and styling; it combs the hair well, preventing it from slipping out and ruining the haircut. A comb can also be useful if the hair is too long, damaged or permed.
- Clamps. Their main function is to secure the strands.
- A hair clipper is an optional but quite popular tool that can be used to easily trim or trim your hair.
Basic cutting methods
Before cutting your hair yourself, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the techniques used by professional hairdressers in salons.
Here are some of them:
- Thinning. For this technique, special scissors are used, which were mentioned a little earlier. With their help, strands are cut to different lengths, and due to this they gain volume, and the hair line becomes smoother.
- Edging is a technique that allows you to create a clear hair line. The hairstyle acquires even boundaries.
- Tushevka. It is performed with scissors or a machine and allows you to get a smooth transition from long hair to shorter ones.
- Graduation. A striking example of this technique is the “ladder” haircut, where the hair is removed at a certain angle.
- “Platform” is a technique in which a certain “platform” or, as it can also be called, a “brush” is created on the parietal area.
- "Hot" haircut. Here, hot tools are used, which, under the influence of temperatures from 80 to 150 degrees, allow the ends of the hair to be sealed. This results in less split ends, but such a haircut usually takes a lot of time.
- Curly haircut. This method involves creating unusual designs or patterns on the head. The technique is original, but requires frequent updating of the hairstyle due to hair growth.
- The finger haircut is the most common haircut method, when the strands are picked up one at a time and cut just above the fingers.
- Sanding is the final stage, during which all imperfections are removed.
Preparation
Before you cut your hair at home, be sure to wash your hair, ridding it of all previously applied care products. Clean hair will best reflect the final result.
Many professional hairdressers advise doing a haircut on damp hair, in which case it is easier to manage and control the process. The main thing here is to try to cut below the desired length, as the hair becomes shorter when it dries.
But it is preferable to trim dry ones, when protruding tufts, loose curls and other imperfections become visible.
What you need for a beautiful women's hairstyle for short hair
To create a beautiful and quick hairstyle for short hair, you will need:
- Hairpins.
- Rubber bands.
- Headbands.
- Invisible.
- Hairpins.
- Hair styling products.
- Curling iron.
- Iron.
- Comb and thin comb.
Before you start doing hairstyles for short hair at home, be sure to wash your hair, as clean strands look fuller and neater.
Choosing a haircut
Before you start, of course, you need to know exactly how you want to cut your hair and choose the option that will best suit your face type. For example, if your face has an elongated shape and a high forehead, then a haircut with bangs is suitable. Almost any hairstyle is good for chubby people.
You can choose your style by looking at hairstyle magazines, of which there are many in bookstores. Or print out a few pictures of yourself and try to draw hair of different lengths, while experimenting with color.
There are also various sites and applications that allow any woman or even man to choose a hairstyle from a photo online for free. You just need to upload one of your images into the program and right at home, without getting off the couch, “try on” any style from hundreds of proposed options. When you make your choice, the result you like can be easily saved and, if desired, even printed.
The main advice is not to rush into a decision. Give yourself a couple of days to think about the decision. This is especially true if you want to radically change your image, get rid of, for example, very long hair and give yourself a short haircut.
The only thing you can’t put off is removing the ends of your hair. This procedure makes your hair healthier.

Layered haircut for older women
Which of the above haircuts did you like best and what haircut do you wear? If you have any questions, we'd be happy to answer them in the comments below!
Several reasons why hair splits
These include:
- Not drinking enough water.
- Lack of vitamins A and B.
- Bad habits such as smoking and alcohol.
- Excessive coffee consumption.
- Diseases of internal organs.
- Various infections.
- Heredity.
- Frequent perms and abuse of coloring.
- Constant use of low-quality shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays and other hair care products.
Trimming long hair
Trimming the ends of your hair is one of the easiest ways to cut your own hair.
How and where to start:
- Hair should be washed and slightly dried. If they are clean, just moisten them with a spray bottle.
- Be sure to comb your hair until it becomes smooth.
- Wet hair is longer than dry hair. You should not forget about this when cutting your hair at home. Once they dry, the hairstyle will be shorter. Beginners can use a ruler.
- We divide the hair, creating a parting in the middle with the sharp end of the comb.
- Separate the control strand, fix it between your fingers and cut off the desired length. The cut should be smooth.
- Then we cut the rest of the hair in the same way, taking the first cut strand as a guide.
- When the entire head is completely processed, the haircut itself is finished. All that remains is to comb your hair and check it for unevenness. If there are any shortcomings, we correct them.
This instruction will be useful for those who want to cut medium-length or even longer hair themselves.
Ladder technique
How to cut your own hair:
- Lower your head down and comb your damp hair.
- We collect all the hair above the forehead line, form it into a ponytail, and tie it with an elastic band. It is important that the elastic is tight and the hair is well fixed.
- We use two more elastic bands: we fix the hair with them approximately in the middle and at the end of the ponytail, in the place where we are going to make a cut.
- Keeping your head straight, pull back the ponytail and cut off the hair along the top edge of the elastic. If you don’t succeed the first time, then while the hair is in the ponytail, you can trim it until the result satisfies you.
- We remove the second elastic band, divide the hair into three strands, each of which is also secured with an elastic band in the middle, as we did the previous time.
- We file the ends of the resulting tails.
- We connect the strands and correct possible shortcomings.
- Remove the main elastic band and comb your hair. The hairstyle is ready.
The method is quite simple, so you can easily do it at home and cut your hair yourself.

- Thus, you should get tourniquets from temple to temple.

How to cut short hair
This process is somewhat different from the previous ones. But you can just as easily cut short hair at home yourself:
- Once you have wetted it, divide your hair into several zones using the sharp end of a comb.
- We pin the strands so that they do not interfere with the work process.
- Starting from the temporal region, select a strand and cut it to the desired length.
- We take the next strand located higher, pull it together with the first, creating an angle of 45° and, aligning it with the already processed curl, we cut it.
- We work in the same way with the temporal zones.
- We begin to gradually move towards the back of the head. The principle of operation is the same: we grab part of the cut strand to align the new one with it. It is advisable to leave the hair in this part of the head a little longer than at the temples.
- We comb the lower part of the hair from the back, if necessary, moisten it and cut it to the required length.
- Finishing the finished hairstyle. To do this, using the same method, grabbing the trimmed and untouched strands at the same time, we trim the ends, trying to ensure that the upper long strands have a smooth transition to the lower short ones.
- We process the parietal area. We take part of the hair, grabbing an already trimmed strand, pull it perpendicular to the head and cut it off. At the same time, we align ourselves with the already finished curls.
- We dry and comb the new hairstyle. We check for errors and correct them on dry hair.
French haircut
A short French haircut is especially suitable for busy ladies who need to look well-groomed with a minimum of effort.
It gives the appearance femininity, elegance, makes you look younger - usually due to the presence of bangs, adds energy, and hides split ends.
One of the advantages of such short haircuts is that they retain their shape for a long time, and you can get your strands in order in a matter of minutes.
Execution algorithm:
- We divide clean, damp hair into zones. Using a U-shaped parting we separate the parietal zone, and using vertical and horizontal partings we separate the left and right superior temporal and inferotemporal zones. We divide the occipital part of the hair into lower, middle and upper occipital zones. We fix all zones with clamps.
- In the bangs area, separate a thin strand with a horizontal parting, comb it onto the face and edge it, creating a short bang (to the middle of the forehead). This is the control strand (CP).
- Then we separate the next strand in the parietal zone with a horizontal parting parallel to the previous one, pull it perpendicular to the head, while grabbing the previously trimmed strand (CP), and cut it above the fingers, equal to the length of the CP. Using this method, we process the entire parietal zone (each new strand is a control for the next one).
- Then, using a vertical parting, we separate a strand in the right upper temporal zone and, grabbing the previously cut hair (to control the length), we also pull it perpendicular to the head (taking into account the bends) and cut it at an angle of 45°. Using this technique, we process the entire upper temporal zone (each new strand is a CP for the next one).
- We move on to the upper occipital zone, continuing the line of the upper temporal zone, and use the same technique to treat this zone. Moving in a circle, we move to the left upper-temporal zone and cut it using the same technique.
- We process the lower temporal and middle occipital zones using the same technique as the upper temporal zone, all the time focusing (for control) on the length of previously cut hair.
- We also cut the lower occipital area using the vertical graduation method, but we cut off the hair from the inside of the palm.
- Using the edging method we process the marginal hairline.
- To create a more interesting haircut shape, we lightly thin the entire mass of hair with thinning scissors, and then process it using the sliding cut method.
This video shows a step-by-step technique for performing a fashionable French haircut for short hair, popular among women of all ages:
Bang
How to cut your own hair:
- I wash my hair and definitely dry it. It is not recommended to cut bangs while wet, as when drying the hair will rise and the haircut may turn out to be shorter than intended.
- We separate the hair that we are going to trim, and remove the rest using clips or an elastic band.
- We shorten the length of the bangs, starting from the side that is convenient for you. We separate strand by strand, hold them between our fingers, pull them tight and cut off the overgrown ends. We hold the scissors at an angle of 45°.
- Finally, the bangs can be profiled if the chosen style allows for it.
To simplify the process, when cutting, take small strands and follow the general cutting line previously formed by your stylist.
Sports
Sports haircuts are especially popular among young people. But thanks to the styling, such a haircut can also look very stylish.
And although the haircut is characterized by short hair length and was originally intended for sports, styling can be both comfortable and very feminine.
Execution technology:
- We divide clean, damp hair into the classic parietal, left and right upper and lower temporal, as well as the lower, middle and upper occipital zones. We fix the hair of each zone with clips.
- We start cutting from the parietal area. Using a horizontal parting, we separate a small strand, pull it perpendicular to the head (at an angle of 90°) and cut it above the fingers, leaving a length of 5-7 cm. Thus, strand by strand we process this entire area (each new strand is a control strand for the next).
- Then we move on to cutting the right upper temporal zone. Using a vertical parting, we separate a strand, pull it perpendicular to the head (taking into account the curvature of the head) and, equal to the length of the hair in the parietal zone, cut it above the fingers at an angle of 45°, thus reducing the length towards the lower temporal zone. Using this technique, we treat the entire upper temporal zone.
- Next, moving along the circumference of the head, we process the upper-occipital and left upper-temporal zones using the vertical graduation technique.
- In the same way, using the method of vertical graduation with a shear, the lower temporal and middle occipital zones. We also cut the lower occipital area using the vertical graduation method at an angle of 45°, but we make the cut from the inside of the palm.
- We edge the entire marginal hairline using the pointing method, creating a jagged edge line. We lighten the entire mass of hair using thinning scissors.
- We dry and style the hair using a round brush, creating natural volume in the parietal area.

Is it possible for a man to put his head in order on his own?
A good, neat haircut is important not only for a woman’s appearance, but also for a man. To do this, first of all, he should also decide on a style, purchase tools and a comb with thick teeth.
The step-by-step process of doing a men's haircut yourself is as follows:
- We stand in front of the mirror.
- Comb your hair in the direction from the ear to the temples.
- Using a comb, lift the hairs and cut them.
- The comb and fingers should be perpendicular at the moment when the scissors are working. Moreover, the comb always remains between the cutting tool and the scalp.
- We cut the sides, top and back of the head in this way.
- Trim the finished haircut. Here, in addition to a comb, you can use a machine or razor.
There is another way to cut a man's hair when an electric hair clipper is used instead of scissors. You can easily cut your hair with it at home. As practice shows, it is easier to work with a machine than with scissors.
Haircut with a machine. Step-by-step instructions for men:
- We start cutting from the sides and back of the head. To do this, choose a nozzle for a short length.
- We bring the clipper to the side section, cut the hair from bottom to top, moving the blade slightly to the side of the head in the upper part.
- We do the same with the second side.
- We make sure that the transitions on both sides are at the same level.
- Let's move on to the occipital zone. Here you can use the same attachment as at the beginning of the haircut if you want to get a basic hairstyle.
- We move the nozzle of the machine to a slightly shorter one, thus processing the lower part of the hair.
- In order to create the desired haircut on the crown yourself, we use scissors. We work with them, lifting strands of hair upward with our fingers or a comb. We try to grab part of the already cut strand, using it as a guide. We remember that you can always shorten your hair, but you won’t be able to get the length back, so start cutting, leaving your hair a little longer than planned.
- If necessary, we trim the bangs. To do this, you should divide it into strands, comb each of them, and only then cut off unnecessary ends along the edge of the comb.
- Let's move on to the final stage. We carefully examine ourselves in the mirror, making sure that the haircut on both sides is symmetrical. If somewhere the strands are longer, remove the excess.
- We process sideburns. Here you can use a razor.
- Using an additional mirror, we frame the hairstyle at the back.
- When finished, style your hair as usual.
Cutting your own hair, as you can see, is not a difficult task. The main thing is to work slowly and be patient.
Trimming the child's hair
How to cut your child's hair yourself:
- For convenience, you need to sit the child so that his head is at eye level.
- We divide the hair into three parts, the middle of which should fall down the back.
- We turn the child with his back to us, ask him to look down, and cut the middle part to the desired length.
- We stand in front of the child’s face, ask him to look first in one direction, then in the other, and cut off the side strands one by one.
These instructions provide a simple basic haircut. Today, most children, both girls and boys, love to choose stylish and fashionable hairstyles for themselves. But for those mothers who have studied in detail the instructions on how to cut their own hair, and even more so have become familiar with them in practice, it will not be difficult to create any form of hairstyle for your child.
RETRO HAIRSTYLES: TYPES, STYLING AND ACCESSORIES
Retro hairstyles for short hair have many options. Moreover, their performance does not depend on your haircut. Popular types of retro hairstyles include:
- waves
- curls
- asymmetry
For waves on short hair, the same technology is used as for long hair. The only difference is that the need to style dangling ends disappears. On short hair, curls must be done in a chaotic manner, creating a “chaotic mess.”
Backcombs serve the function of increasing the volume of bangs or the entire hairstyle. Smooth styling with the effect of wet hair also belongs to the retro style. If the length of your hair allows you to make small curls, then styling it in a retro style will not be difficult. All you need:
- foam
- varnish
- comb
- curling tongs
- several clamps
- bright hairpin
At the beginning of styling, you need to comb your hair well. Apply foam on top and distribute evenly over the entire length. To create curls, you need to mark the top of your head. Determine which side the parting will be on. Select the widest strand near it and pinch it with tongs. When you remove the tongs, you will see a small bend; you need to fix it with a clamp and spray it with varnish. The same strand is curled again with curling irons, only the location of the wave should be in the other direction. This curl is also fixed with varnish and a clip. This method is used to curl the rest of the hair on the top of the head.
Dream about hair
Why dream of cutting your own hair? Hair is a source of human strength and health; it has always been endowed with special magical powers. They give women a special sexual appeal. Therefore, the interpretation of dreams related to haircuts is most often negative. In all dream books they predict betrayal or deception, poverty, quarrel, unexpected sadness.
If you dream about cutting your own hair too short, you can expect not very pleasant changes in life associated with loss of money or other losses.
Sigmund Freud's dream book warns the person who sees such a dream about important fateful changes.
If on the eve of the vision the dreamer was thinking about how to cut her hair herself in order to change her image or refresh her hairstyle, if she visited a hairdresser, or simply talked with a stylist, then such dreams should not be taken seriously. Most likely, these night visions simply reflected the current reality.
