Florence Hvorostovskaya: All twenty years Dima looked at me with loving eyes

Dmitry Hvorostovsky passed away two years ago. In September, a monument to the golden baritone of Russia was unveiled in Krasnoyarsk. Dmitry’s family flew to the opening - his parents, as well as his wife Florence, children Maxim and Nina. Komsomolskaya Pravda managed to talk with them on the eve of their departure to London, where the artist’s relatives live.
"There are no more tears left"
— Florence, did you like the monument?
— The monument was made by Krasnoyarsk sculptor Vladimir Usov. One day he met with us and showed us a sketch. We liked everything right away. Especially parents. Vladimir Ilyich works in Moscow, Dima’s parents also live here for many years. They came to see how the work was progressing. The result is an amazing sculpture, Dmitry’s figure seems to be in motion - the impression is that he is going on stage to the audience.
In general, I am touched by how people in Russia treat Dima’s memory. We flew to Krasnoyarsk on the Dmitry Hvorostovsky plane. We landed at the airport called “Dmitry Hvorostovsky”. In Krasnoyarsk, the Opera and Ballet Theater and the embankment bear his name.
- Touching to tears!
- Well, I have no more tears left after everything...
Love at first sight
— You were a successful opera singer. How did you decide to quit music?
- Very simply, I met my love. And she wanted to devote her whole life to her husband. We met in Geneva. He came to rehearse Don Juan. Dima said that he fell in love with me at first sight. From the first second I also realized that this was my man. We had a very beautiful love story.
— Did Dmitry say why he loved you? There were always many women around him, but he chose you.
- Yes, there are always a lot... Why me? For beauty! These are not mine, these are his words. I often remember how he stood, leaning against the wall, and said: “I have never seen such beauty.” Dima looked after me beautifully. And all his life, all twenty years, he looked at me with loving eyes, as on the first day he met... When he went on stage, he always looked for me in the audience. I saw him whisper: “Where is Flosha?”
— Could you imagine that you would find yourself married to a Russian?
- Never! I'm originally from Geneva. There are a lot of French, Italians, Germans around... He could never imagine this either. Siberian - and here I am! But this is how it all turned out. My main treasure is our children. They are my strength and support in everything.
The monument to the artist was created by sculptor Vladimir Usov.

— Do you communicate with Dmitry’s children from his first marriage?
— Yes, we are friends with Danya and Sasha. We are close people. They are now 23 years old (they are twins. - Author), graduating from university. And Masha (the daughter of Dmitry Hvorostovsky’s first wife, adopted by him - Author) gave birth to a second child a few days ago.
— What does your London everyday life consist of now?
- Now this is a house, children, their upbringing. Doing sports. I go to the gym to keep myself in shape. I have two dogs, I walk with them. The first is a Pomsky breed named Coco. We took her right after Dima left. We decided that it would be better this way. It gives a lot of pleasant emotions and love. And the other one - a little black dog Kiki - appeared with us on Nina’s birthday, July 8th. By the way, it so happened that all of Dima’s children are Cancers according to their horoscope.
“We speak three languages at home”
— It is believed that Russians and Europeans have different mentalities. Do you remember what amazed you in our country?
— Dmitry was my husband, but I can’t judge everyone. I'll tell you about him. I was amazed by his iron will. He strived to do as much as possible and was always in a good mood. In general, he was such... a fighter! Ah, I remembered what amazed me in Russia when I first arrived. People didn't smile at all. Then I realized that in the first moment, after that you see sincere smiles. I really love Russia and the Russian language. That's why I learned it quickly.
— Is your home hospitable?
- Yes, we love guests. Maxim and Nina love it when we have a lot of people for New Year. I like to cook pasta, risotto... After Dima left, there were no fewer friends. Everyone supports us.
— Have you learned to cook Russian dishes?
- Yes, pancakes! After all, this was Dima’s favorite breakfast!
- And the dumplings?
- Yes, they sculpted! I really can’t do it myself, but I did it with guidance. We lived for three months in San Francisco and sculpted them together with Dmitry. When we are in Russia, children are ready to eat only dumplings all the time.
— Do you speak Russian at home now?
— Yes, we speak three languages: Russian, English, French.
— You are probably often asked about this: do you want to write a book?
— I think there will be a book. There is also an idea for a film. But for now it’s all in my thoughts.

CONFESSION
Artist's daughter Nina: I dream of singing like dad
— Would you like your children to devote themselves to music too? - I ask Florence.
- Yes, sure. But the main thing is that the children themselves want it. Now they are passionate. Nina has been making music for a long time. And Maxim started recently. He constantly listens and plays himself from morning to evening.
Children join the conversation.
“I play guitar, keyboards and sing,” says Maxim. — I try to write music in the style of jazz, blues, rock. But I can’t sing opera.
“I love music,” says Nina. — I play the violin, piano, and sing. I also dance and practice acting. But most of all I love to sing - blues and classics. I dream of singing like my dad!
— I know you often visit Krasnoyarsk. Do you like it there?
Maksim:
- Really like. There is beautiful nature there. We talked with relatives, walked around the city, went to the bathhouse, visited Stolby (in the mountains - Ed.), in the museum where there is a collection dedicated to dad.
AND AT THIS TIME
Friends will continue good deeds
— On October 21, the Dmitry Hvorostovsky Charitable Foundation is organizing a concert “Dmitry Hvorostovsky and Friends for Children” with the participation of world opera stars.
— Yes, after Dima left, a charitable foundation was organized in his name. And we continue his work. This time Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Ildar Abdrazakov, Luca Salsi, Katya Gubanova will perform. They will perform famous opera arias and duets. It was not easy to bring such stars together. I really wanted Anna and Yusif to participate. They were friends with Dima, Anna supported him during his illness. All artists will perform for free, without fees. The proceeds will go to the treatment of children with cancer (according to representatives of Rusfond, which collaborates with the Hvorostovsky Foundation, almost 52 million rubles were collected at previous concerts. It was possible to help 121 children. - Ed.).

Turned the blog into a kind of memorial
Florence left the stage at the request of her beloved and even now has no plans to return to it. She admits that life goes on, but living without a loved one is very difficult. Before his death, the gray-haired Russian hero said that the mother of two children must definitely arrange her destiny.
The widow grieved for more than two years, and chose her social networks as a kind of memorial. She posted family photos, and fans left condolences. Few could come to terms with the loss, with the fact that the famous singer left in the prime of his life.

Several photographs of Dmitry Hvorostovsky and his family members.
Dmitry Hvorostovsky died at the age of 55, leaving Florence Hvorostovsky as a widow - a 47-year-old beauty, half Italian, half French by birth. They met in 1999, he was still married, but on the verge of divorce, she was free. A significant meeting took place on the stage of the theater, Dmitry performed the part of Don Juan, she played the role of one of his girlfriends. Florence Illy immediately set her eyes on the handsome, gray-haired Russian hero. Talented, temperamental, stately, well built.
Dmitry Hvorostovsky had a very difficult relationship with his first wife, as a result of which he even became addicted to alcohol, slowly destroyed himself, and did things that he recalled with shame much later. It is possible that most creative individuals are prone to self-destruction and alcohol abuse. Some, like Dmitry Hvorostovsky, talk about it openly, while others hush up their problems with the green serpent. So I look at this handsome man, who should have lived and lived, but he died at the peak of his popularity, died in the prime of his strength. Stress probably contributes to illness, outwardly polished and successful, but inside he is broken, and even though misfortunes befell him even before meeting Florence Illy, before the birth of children Max and Nina, the self-destructive mechanism was launched a long time ago.
Dmitry Hvorostovsky's first wife, Svetlana, died in 2015; at that time she already knew about her ex-husband's illness; the couple even managed to reconcile, although over the years they managed to spoil a lot of blood for each other. Dmitry Hvorostovsky and Svetlana had twins in 1996 - daughter Alexandra and son Daniil. In addition, Svetlana has a daughter from her first marriage - Maria, she was like Dmitry’s own daughter.
Flosha, as Dmitry Hvorostovsky called his second wife, was a ray of light in his life. It was this woman who saved him from drunkenness, gave him a second chance to become happy, successful, in demand, became a muse, wife, lover, mother. For the sake of her beloved, she mastered English and Russian, learned to cook borscht and make dumplings, gave up the stage, and devoted herself entirely to her family. She had no choice, this was the only way she could give her beloved the feeling of a reliable rear. Florence herself could have achieved a lot, she had all the data for this, but love turned out to be more important for her. At 47 years old, she was left a widow with two children in her arms: 14-year-old son Max and 10-year-old daughter Nina. Dmitry Hvorostovsky struggled with his illness, brain cancer, for two years, but the disease won.
