Edmond Rostand's famous play Cyrano de Bergerac, directed by Jamie Lloyd, is playing to a full house in London. A recognized master of disguises, Scottish actor James McAvoy, has been invited to play the title role.

Jamie Lloyd is known for his unconventional interpretation of classics. Here are the heroes of “Cyrano de Bergerac” in the Playhouse theater on the banks of the Thames, living in our days, doing without raincoats and swords, dressed in sweaters, jeans and leather jackets. The three-hour performance is performed in verse, and all the characters are participants in a rap battle.

British critics particularly note the masterful command of language inherent in the entire troupe, and primarily in James McAvoy. True, he delivers his monologues and remarks with a microphone at the ready with a deliberately Scottish accent.

When asked by NG what the Scottish dialect has to do with it, Lloyd replied at a press conference that his greatest desire was to show the characters as they are. “Without embellishment and without unnecessary falsehood,” he explained. The director gave complete freedom to the actors. In particular, the literary hero, who has, perhaps, the most famous nose after the fabulous Pinocchio, is unexpectedly deprived of an outstanding “facial decoration”. According to Lloyd, no one knew for sure whether Cyrano really had a long nose, which supposedly turned people off, or whether he himself saw himself as ugly when he looked in the mirror.

By the way, the mirror became almost the main attribute of a very ascetic scenography. McAvoy's character often looks thoughtfully at his reflection, feeling unworthy of the love of the beautiful Roxanne. And if it weren’t for his suspiciousness and endless uncertainty, he could well have built a happy life with the woman he loved. With his sharp mind and romantic heart!

“One of the main problems in the world today is that people are concerned about how they look on social media. And this makes the heroes of the modern play absolutely lonely people,” McAvoy shared his opinion about the play. Although the actor himself changed his appearance for this role: he shaved his head and noticeably increased his muscle mass.

“This is a very serious role for me,” the actor continued. – You have to make the viewer laugh and cry with you, sometimes shock, show the entire arsenal of your capabilities. You can get high ratings and good press, but if the audience doesn't applaud and jump out of their seats and thank you for a great job, then it's not worth a penny." Indeed, the pain and helplessness of McAvoy's Cyrano appears before the audience like an exposed nerve.

Cyrano de Bergerac is not the first collaboration between Lloyd and McAvoy. The Scot has previously appeared in Lloyd's productions such as Macbeth and The Ruling Class. Both performances were performed on the stage of the Trafalgar Studios Theatre. At the same time, McAvoy starred in the films “Atonement”, “Trance”, “Split”, “His Dark Materials”, “X-Men”, etc. In general, he is an incredibly sought-after actor who brilliantly brings a vibrant sense of energy to the stage. The play “Cyrano de Bergerac” has been nominated for several nominations for the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award, including “Best Director” and “Best Actor”.

Lloyd's newest project is Chekhov's The Seagull, starring Emilia Clarke as Nina Zarechnaya. She is familiar to Russians for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Future plans include “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. The director invited American Jessica Chastain to play the main role of Nora Helmer.
