History[ | ]
Describing his upcoming seventh studio album Lover
as a "love letter to a loved one"[1], Taylor Swift attempted to convey an emotional spectrum by looking at feelings such as sadness and loneliness "through a romantic gaze"[2].
The recording process for the album took less than three months and was completed in February 2019.[3] The track was produced by Jack Antonoff, who was the main producer of the entire album. He previously worked with Swift on Sweeter than Fiction (2013), 1989
(2014), I Don't Wanna Live Forever (2016) and
Reputation
(2017).[4] He produced nine of the new album's eighteen tracks and co-wrote eight.[5]
"Lover" was released on August 16, 2020 as the third single from the seventh album.[6][7][8].
"Lover" lasts three minutes and forty-one seconds[9][10] and is written in the key of G major and has an overall tempo of 74 beats per minute, and Swift's vocals range from E3 (Small Octave E) to D5 (Second Octave D) [eleven].
Alice Vincent from The Daily Telegraph
and Louise Bruton of
The Irish Times
described "Lover" as a country song,[12][13] while Jason Lipshutz of
Billboard
disagreed with this assessment, stating that "'Lover' is not country music." song, but it certainly reveals the early influences that many songs from Swift's early career marked."[14]
In Rolling Stone
described the song as "tender lyrics about devotion to a retro musical motif."[15]
Billboard
magazine described it as "an old-school ballad with a '60s vibe."[16]
's Karen Gwee of NME
considered the "guitar-centric" song a throwback to Swift's "country days".[17]
Abby Aguirre of Vogue
described her as "a romantic, haunting, waltzing, nugget of a singer-songwriter."[1]
Hindustan Times
wrote that the song is "quite a slow and rather romantic tune", adding that the lyrics "give the impression that the song is an ode to someone."[18]
Capricorn: The Man
Hard work and ambition are the main characteristics of representatives of the earthly element. Such people can sacrifice their personal life for the sake of work and career. They are incredibly persistent in achieving their goals, dreaming of fame and recognition. Their goal is to get into the upper echelons of society, increase their status, become rich and successful. This Swift song is about ambition and how nothing can stop a person on the path to his dream. Capricorns will definitely like it.

Career
Taylor Swift (hot photos of her appeared more often a couple of years ago than now) considers her meeting with the famous producer, which was already described above in the article, to be the beginning of her career. Their acquaintance took place at a very opportune moment. Taylor began participating in Scott Brown's new project, which quickly brought her popularity.
Already in 2006, the girl managed to record her first studio single. The singer dedicated the new product to her idol - one of her favorite country singers. Just a couple of months later, her first album appeared. Interestingly, the girl’s debut album instantly became popular. She was highly appreciated by the audience. The album stayed on the famous chart for more than 230 weeks. She also received the status of a five-times platinum album. The girl managed to break the record of the decade.
In her first album, Taylor mostly sang about teenage problems and experiences - the difficulties of growing up, about love, her emotions. The producer had concerns that such song themes would seem too banal to the public. But, on the contrary, they resonated in the hearts of the listeners.
Very soon they started talking about Swift as an aspiring country star. The girl began to receive various awards. She herself was endlessly happy with this development of events, which she could not even dream of a couple of years ago.
Already in the fall of 2008, the girl’s second album appeared. Her performance was appreciated by her fans. The album again topped the popular charts and even broke previous records. Even then it became clear that Taylor had a great musical future ahead of her. The new album went six times platinum. Of course, further awards appeared.
By about 2010, Swift was able to become not just a popular singer, but a real world star. 2 new albums also strengthened her place on the stage. They came out once every 2 years. Each of them became successful.
After these two albums, the singer gained thousands of fans not only in the USA, but also in Europe. Taylor began to tour around the world. She also studied Asia. For example, the girl was greeted with unprecedented applause in Japan. The singer literally spent several years traveling. She appeared in her native country only for the next award.
The fifth album, released in 2014, became unusual for the star. It was a pop record that Taylor was very nervous about. But the album was enthusiastically received by fans and sold out in the United States within the first week. Swift fans purchased more than 1 million records in a short period of time.
The following table will help you get acquainted with the singer’s most important awards:
Award/title | Year received |
Best Author and Performer of the Year | 2006 |
Future superstar | 2008 |
Singer of the Year | 2008 |
Best video | 2008 |
20th place in the ranking of the most desirable women on the planet | 2011 |
In addition to her musical career, the girl is also building an acting career. This started in 2009. The singer's first role was an episode in the series.
A little later, she starred in a feature film about Hannah Montana. The star's appearance in the frame was short, but the girl became friends with the actress who got the main role.
If we talk about all of Taylor’s roles, the most memorable is her work in the comedy “Valentine’s Day.”
She later had several more small appearances in films. Of course, the girl did not completely switch to acting, but cinema significantly added to her popularity.
Today, Swift rarely agrees to film roles. She tries to spend all her energy on her musical career. In addition, the girl runs her own business. She has already made a name and sells her own products under it.
Taylor's popularity was greatly facilitated by her participation in various scandals. The loudest of them was with Kanye West. A young man humiliated the singer at one of the music awards. Swift received the award, but the musician noted that she did not deserve it and singled out a completely different singer. West then called Taylor out in his song and video. However, it later became known that the singer herself agreed to the insult for the sake of PR.
Awards and nominations[ | ]
The song was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards, marking Taylor's fourth nomination in the category, following "You Belong with Me" (2010), "Shake It Off" (2015) and "Blank Space" (2016). For his work on the music video, Kurt Gefke was nominated for the 24th Art Directors Guild Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards in the category "Short Format: Web Series, Music Video or Commercial"[40].

Commercial success[ | ]
The single "Lover" debuted on August 31, 2020 at number 19 on the US Billboard
Hot 100, becoming Swift's 44th top 20 hit, surpassing Madonna's record for the most.
At the same time, the single topped the Digital Song Sales chart (with 35,000 sales), becoming the 18th chart topper there (a record, Rihanna is in second place with 14 No. 1 singles)[43]. A week later and immediately after the release of the album Lover
, the song rose to number 10 (on the chart dated September 7). "Lover" became Swift's 25th top 10 hit on the Hot 100, tied with Elvis Presley for 10th place and behind only leaders Madonna, 38; Drake, 35; The Beatles, 34; Rihanna, 31; Michael Jackson, 30; Mariah Carey, 28; Stevie Wonder, 28; Janet Jackson, 27; Elton John, 27[44].
In Canada, the song peaked at number 15 on the Canadian Hot 100.[45]
In Europe, the song began its charting at the following positions: No. 84 (Germany)[46], 14 (Ireland)[47], 12 (Scotland)[48], 74 (Sweden), 81 (Switzerland), 23 (UK Singles Chart)[49][50][51]. Greater success at the start was in the countries of Oceania, 15th place (Australia, New Zealand)[52][53].
Sagittarius: Soon You'll Get Better
Representatives of the fire element are distinguished by their energy, activity, activity, and cheerfulness. They never sit still, they can even get involved in dubious adventures, but they are always convinced of the successful outcome of the matter.
This song by Swift may seem somewhat slow to Sagittarius, but it reflects the entire inner world of representatives of the fire element, and specifically, irrepressible optimism and faith in a better future.
Music video[ | ]
On August 15, Swift announced on social media that the music video for "Lover" would be shown in concert during a YouTube Q&A session the day before the album's August release.[54] The lyric video was released on August 16, 2020 on Swift's YouTube channel, simultaneously with the premiere of the song[55]. In it, Swift's home videos are projected onto a white sheet with song lyrics superimposed on top.[56]
The official music video was released on August 23. It was shot by Swift herself along with director Drew Kirsch, who also worked on “You Need to Calm Down.” The video begins on Christmas Day when a little girl receives a glass snow globe containing a miniature house as a gift. The viewer is then immersed in the world of this snow globe, telling the story of Swift and her lover, played by dancer Christian Owens
). The camera moves from room to room, each with its own monochromatic color scheme and storyline. There's a green room where Swift rocks the dyed ends of her hair and plays the drums, a yellow room where the two play board games with Swift's cat Benjamin Button, a blue bathroom with a life-size aquarium, and a loft where the couple relives memories from watching home the video is the same as the "Lover" lyric video - on a temporary screen. Swift and Owens dance through the ups and downs of their relationship, their emotions often matching the colors of each room. The ending of the video is when it seems to come back from the dollhouse in the snow globe to show that the girl - the child of this couple - will warm anyone's heart[57][58].
Dancer Christian Owens was previously seen as part of Swift's dance group during her concert tours The 1989 World Tour (2015) and Reputation Stadium Tour (2018).[59] Owens' role in the video was revealed during a Lover's Lounge livestream on YouTube that preceded the music video's release; where Swift called him "one of the most talented people" she knows.[60]
Scorpio: I Think He Knows
Representatives of this constellation are distinguished by courage, determination, self-confidence, and self-esteem. They make excellent leaders and strategists. Scorpios have so much energy and enthusiasm that they can lead a crowd. But just like any strong and invincible person, the representative of the water element has his own Achilles heel: this is a love relationship, or rather, the fear of betrayal on the part of a partner. This Swift song is exactly about how to gain self-confidence when it comes to love affairs.

Concert performances[ | ]
Swift first performed "Lover" as part of "You Need to Calm Down" at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 26, 2020; she played a pink guitar, surrounded by blue spotlights and the looming moon[61]. On September 2, Swift performed the song on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge[62][63]. On September 9, Swift performed the song at a concert in the City of Lover (Paris, France)[64]. On October 5, she performed a stripped-down piano version on Saturday Night Live
[65].
On November 10, 2020, Swift performed the songs “ME!”, “Lover” (Piano Acoustic), “You Need To Calm Down” at the TMall 11/11 Shopping
, visiting China for the first time in 4 years[66].
