What are ionic combs and how do they work?

hairdresser's equipment »

Wearing a hat, exposure to the sun and cold, and using thermal styling tools dehydrate the hair structure, causing it to become dry, brittle and unruly. Ionization combs, which remove static tension and make hair smooth and silky, cope well with this problem.

How does a hair dryer with ionization function work?

Ionization is exposure to negatively charged ions. As a result of this hair treatment, static electricity is eliminated, the strands become elastic and shiny. Neutralization of positively charged particles provides protection from the effects of temperature changes.

This effect is ensured by the special design of the hair dryer. The part through which hot air passes is coated with tourmaline coating. During the drying process, the device heats up and the coating begins to release negatively charged particles that condition the strands.

Due to tourmaline coating, the hair dryer heats up more evenly, which further helps protect hair from damage during drying.

Hair dryer brush

In international language he is also called a stayer. This is a heating electric device with a rounded long shape, with various attachments, with which you can style your hair into a beautiful hairstyle using hot technology.

They all differ in their shape and diameter; let’s look at the most common nozzles:

  • With a large diameter, a round hair dryer brush is designed for styling large curls;
  • An attachment with the function of automatically retracting teeth - for long hair, when when styling it gets wrapped up and it is very difficult to create beautiful curls;
  • The diffuser device has the shape of fingers; it is convenient for styling short-length hair;
  • The half-shaped brush is designed to pull hair through and increase root volume in the hairstyle.

The video tells you which hair dryer to choose:

Selection principle

  • In the store, ask the seller to allow you to look at it more carefully - take the hair dryer in your hands, try to manipulate it, and evaluate the comfort of the styling device; it should not weigh down your hand.
  • Read the product data sheet, understand its power - if this figure is more than 600 W, then it may be suitable for styling wet hair.

  • An important parameter is the warm-up time of the device and the maximum operating temperature. These indicators should correspond to the figures of 2 minutes and no more than 60 degrees Celsius.
  • The device must have a function for supplying cold air flow to secure the styling.
  • Try to buy a hairdryer with ceramic attachments - they are safer and provide better styling.

Rating of the best

  • The first place is claimed by a model from the world famous company Philips HP8664. This is a rather expensive device, but with a lot of advantages - from self-rotating attachments to ceramic material. The set includes 2 nozzles of different diameters.

  • Second place goes to the Rowenta CF 9320 hair dryer brush. The device is equipped with the functionality of supplying hot and warm air, high power, with two nozzles of different diameters. But it is a little heavier than the previous model, and your hand can get tired quickly from long-term styling.

Advantages and disadvantages

Hair dryers equipped with an ionization function are preferable to purchase. This is not a marketing trick at all, but a very real way to make your hair well-groomed and protect it from damage. The only disadvantage of such hair dryers is their higher cost. Among the advantages of regular ionization are the following:

  • maintaining the natural level of moisture, since under the influence of negatively charged ions, all the water on the surface of the hair shaft is converted into tiny droplets that can penetrate deep into the stratum corneum,
  • prevention of increased fragility and cross-section of strands,
  • smoothing in the process of ionization of cuticle scales that form the protective layer of the hair shaft,
  • reducing excessive activity of the sebaceous glands, which occurs due to dry scalp and hair. The rate of contamination of strands is also reduced because negatively charged ions repel dust and dirt particles from the hair. Thanks to this effect, you can wash your hair less often,
  • providing a more durable and aesthetically attractive styling. Electrified hair, styled in a hairstyle, looks sloppy and dull, as it fluffs and clings to each other.

It should be understood that a hair dryer with an ionization function is not capable of restoring already damaged hair. The device only helps to ensure further protection of the strands from negative operating factors.

Negative ions neutralize and remove static from the hair, making the strands less frizzy and smoother. Ionization can be active - the emission of negative ions and passive - the neutralization of positive ones due to the coating material.

How to choose?

When choosing a hair dryer with air ionization, there are a number of important points to consider.

  • If the device is chosen for home use , then you should not buy overly powerful models. For the owner of a short haircut, a hairdryer with an electric motor with a power of up to 1200 W will be enough; for long hair, a motor of up to 2000 W will be suitable. Products with power above 2000 W are intended for professional use and are not needed at home.
  • It is recommended to pay attention to the method of regulating speeds and temperatures and choose models with autonomous regulators. This will allow you to select the thermal mode of the air stream regardless of the inflation speed, which is very convenient in the process of creating a hairstyle.
  • If you have the opportunity to choose between a tourmaline ionizer and a generator , then it is better to go with the first option. More modern samples are coated with a combined composition consisting of a mixture of Teflon and tourmaline. This spraying is highly effective and will last a very long time.
  • It is advisable to pay attention to the body of the hair dryer and choose models made of heat-resistant and impact-resistant materials.
  • You should also look at the completeness of the device , the number of attachments and the ease of their connection. The presence of a technical passport and warranty card is also required.

Tips for using a hair dryer with ionic function

This hair dryer will be especially useful for those who suffer from the following problems:

  • constant hair tangles,
  • lack of hair volume at the roots,
  • thinning of strands from frequent use of curling irons and straightening irons,
  • violation of the water balance of the scalp (excessive oiliness at the roots and dryness at the ends of the strands, the appearance of dandruff and rapid contamination),
  • difficulties with styling strands in your hair,
  • dullness and loss of shine and elasticity,
  • consequences of frequent hair coloring and perming,
  • splitting of the hair shaft (section).

For owners of thick and long hair that actively accumulates static electricity, a hair dryer with an ionization function is simply irreplaceable. Otherwise, all the beauty of shining and voluminous strands will be lost due to the influence of positively charged particles.

I have a hairdryer with ionization - my hair is actually less electrified when styling, before this I had no this function, the difference is noticeable.

I generally don’t dry my hair without a hair dryer with ionization, it just feels like straw afterwards... After a hair dryer with an ionizer, my hair is shiny and doesn’t get dirty for a long time. In short, take it with ionization, you won’t regret it.

If I dry it with an ionic hair dryer, my hair is smooth, shiny, and elastic. But if a hairdryer without ionization is all it is, the hair becomes kind of fluffy, dry, shaggy...

Instructions for use

Ionic conditioning of hair during the drying process is performed as follows:

  1. Wash your hair using a shampoo suitable for your hair type.
  2. Then use a conditioner or nourishing mask.
  3. Dry your hair slightly with a soft terry towel.
  4. Spray the entire length of your hair with a heat protectant.
  5. Start drying your hair on the lowest temperature setting. The ionization function should be turned on immediately.
  6. Dry your bangs and hair near your face with a comb, lifting the strands at the roots and achieving volume.

  7. To dry the entire length of the strands, use a round styling brush.
  8. Hair on the back of the head needs especially careful drying. Otherwise, the styling will look sloppy and bulky. To do this, secure the side strands with plastic hairdressing clips and, directing a stream of hot air to the back of the head, lift the hair with a brush at the very roots.

The longer you hold a strand of hair curled on a brush under the stream of hot air generated by a hairdryer, the more pronounced curl you will get as a result.

Using a hair dryer with an ionic function, hair looks healthier and smoother after drying. The cuticle scales are smoothed, the strands are perfectly even, but not overdried, the ends are slightly curled inward.

Braun Satin Hair 7 comb with ionic

I think the problem of electrified hair is familiar to almost all girls. She also sometimes bothered me. And although I always use balm and combs that do not provoke the formation of static electricity, sometimes my hair still “cracks and flies,” especially in winter. So what is this comb - a useful device or a pleasant pampering? My impressions, photos and before/after illustrations below the cut.

Design
I really like the appearance of the comb. So laconic, but stylish, in black and silver colors. The comb is streamlined, ergonomically shaped. On the back side:

The teeth of the comb are smooth and do not catch the hair. The comb itself is of medium hardness:

Powered by two 1.5V pinky batteries (type AAA/LR03/AM4). They last a long time, in 4 months I have never changed them.

How does it work?
Information from the manufacturer:
This comb contains active ions that will make your hair smoother and shinier after the first use!
The comb also helps remove static electricity from the hair, making it manageable, voluminous and ready for any hairstyle. The IONTEC function will create a protective “halo” around your hair, which will protect it from injury and make it easy to style. The effect is similar to that of hair conditioner. The seamless teeth of the comb not only comb through hair perfectly, but also help prevent damage to its texture. It fits very comfortably in the hand. Not light, but not too heavy either:

It turns on by pressing the button:

When turned on, the indicator turns green:

On the back of the comb there is a window under which the element that creates ionization is hidden. When switched off it is closed:

Once you turn on the comb, it opens and the element starts working. At the same time, it quietly hisses and a slight smell of ozone is heard (it looked like there was a smell during the quartz treatment procedure in the hospital).

Now we begin to comb our hair. I usually do this for a minute or two, then turn the comb off and put it away. I can't say that she combs wet hair well. But mine are thin and get tangled quickly. That’s why I always comb my hair with Teaser first, and then pick up Brown. I use it every time after washing, on dry hair. And, if necessary, between washes, more often in winter. In summer, once after each wash is enough. By the way, the comb itself can and should be washed from time to time, and doing so is very convenient. There is a special button at the top of the case:

When you press it, the working part is removed and you can wash it without fear of water getting inside the comb itself:

After washing and drying, it is easily inserted into place.

What is the effect of use?

Before purchasing, I read a lot of reviews, from negative to positive, but after four months of use I can give my own. When combing, it removes static electricity, for me this is the most important and significant plus. In winter, when the hat made my hair electrified despite balms and leave-in products, it saved my life. Hair becomes more manageable. It also slightly smoothes the hair, making it both to the touch and visually smoother. But at the same time the volume significantly decreases. I found this way out for myself - I don’t comb it at the roots at all, just the length, retreating about 10 cm from the roots, then the volume hardly disappears. About the dazzling shine. which many people experience, but for me this effect is practically not pronounced. Well, maybe they shine a little more, but not wow. In my opinion, the comb is suitable for those with unruly hair; it will discipline them a little and smooth them out. For those whose hair is thin and tangled, it is better to use it on hair that has already been combed with Teaser (or Macadamia, Dessata, etc.), because it does not detangle well. I don’t recommend it to those with very curly hair, the curl stops being clear and you end up with a fluffy dandelion (tried it on a friend), although if the wave is light, it can smooth it out, probably depends on the structure of the hair.

This is how it works for me

I took a special photo after I unbraided my hair. Pre-combed with a teaser. Left - before, right - after:

Removed the frizz and smoothed it out slightly. The volume has decreased a little (for fasting I combed it from roots to ends; usually I don’t touch the roots). Well, I removed static electricity, but you can’t show it in the photo)

Conclusion

: This comb did not become a must-have for me, but I don’t regret the purchase either. Although, of course, it would be nicer to receive such a thing as a gift). It performs the most important function for me - removing static electricity from the hair and lightly smoothing it. But I wouldn’t rely on other functions, such as additional shine or protection from injury, then there will be no disappointments.

Price

- at the time of purchase about 1900 rubles, now it ranges from 2200-2500 rubles.

How do you get rid of static electricity?

Thank you for your attention! Irina.

Until I got a hair dryer with an ionization function, I sincerely believed that this was a marketing trick and nothing more. It seemed to me that there was no noticeable difference between a regular hair dryer and one that generates negative ions. When they gave me a hairdryer with an ionizer, I was convinced of the opposite. After the first use there was no special effect, except that the hair became a little smoother. However, after two weeks of constant use, the strands became smooth, silky and as if nourished. For the purity of the experiment, I did not change my skincare products during this period, continuing to use my usual shampoo and conditioner. Nevertheless, the hair was noticeably transformed - after styling it with a hairdryer, it began to shine and shimmer, although it usually looks duller. I noticed this effect only after visiting a beauty salon, where professional techniques are used on hair. I definitely recommend replacing your regular hair dryer with a device with an ionization function. Mysterious Invisible Negative Ions Really Work! In addition, the styling lasts a little longer than usual. I think this is due to the fact that hair does not attract dust and dirt particles so much. In addition, after removing the headdress or hood, the hairstyle does not look like a crow's nest or a sheaf of straw. I use a Moser Ventus hair dryer. This is already the second device that I purchase from this manufacturer. Yes, my hair dryer is a little more expensive than other models in its segment, but it completely justifies the difference in cost. This device is very convenient for self-styling and does not dry out your hair at all.

Many people are accustomed to the fact that blow-drying leads to dry strands and loss of shine. But if the hair dryer is equipped with a built-in ionic conditioning function, then damage to the hair during the styling process will be minimized. Healthy, manageable and shiny strands, free from excess static electricity, look well-groomed and give you self-confidence.
