Milla Jovovich: “Clothes for me are a reflection of personality”

Milla Jovovich: biography

Milla Jovovich is an actress whose destiny can be called international. She was born in Ukraine, achieved the love of the public and recognition in Hollywood thanks to the efforts of a French director, and Jovovich is Russian and Serbian by nationality. The artist has made an excellent career in music and modeling: her photo shoots are eagerly published in the most prestigious publications of the world fashion industry.

A girl named Milla was born on December 17, 1975 in Kyiv. Her mother Galina Loginova was a famous Soviet actress who connected her life with a simple Serbian doctor Bogi Jovovich: he came to the capital of Ukraine from Montenegro on a student exchange program.

Life brought the young family to Dnepropetrovsk, where the future Hollywood star went to kindergarten. But those years were not very calm, and the Jovovich family was forced to leave the USSR. London sheltered them for a short time, but the Soviet emigrants spent only 7 months there, after which they went to Los Angeles, which became their new home.

Life in the USA turned out to be very difficult for the young family: frequent conflicts, everyday difficulties and troubles put an end to this marriage. Bogi Jovovich soon married, and his daughter had a little half-brother, Marco, whom Milla saw only a couple of times in her life.

Galina Loginova worked as a cleaner to make ends meet and feed her daughter: not knowing the language, she could not apply for a better job, and because of her Soviet origin, employers were wary of the woman. In childhood and adolescence, Milla Jovovich also suffered because of her origin: classmates mocked her, calling her a “Russian spy.” She remained a stranger at school, although she mastered English in just 3 months.

The cool attitude of her peers forced the girl to abstract herself from school life and focus on her modeling career. But Galina Loginova, with a professional eye, recognized an actress in her daughter and in every possible way encouraged her to study at the Professional School of Actors in California.

As a teenager, Milla was a restless child: she smashed store windows and cheated with credit cards. At the same time, her father Bogi was arrested for illegal transactions with medical insurance. In one of her interviews, the movie star said that 5 years in prison had a positive impact on her father, and he became much more humane.

Biography and career

Born on December 17, 1975 in Kyiv. Milla's grandfather and brother, Bogdan and Branko Jovovic, took part in the attempt to overthrow Josip Broz Tito. Brothers Bogdan and Branko Jovovic with their friend Milita Perovic arrived in Kyiv in the early 1960s, sailed to Odessa from Albania on a Soviet ship under the guise of tourists, they were fleeing the wrath of Josip Broz Tito[2]. Father - Bogic (Bogdan) Jovovich, a doctor from Montenegro[3]; mother - Galina Loginova - Russian; Soviet and American actress. Ancestors on the mother’s side are natives of Tula[4]. As a child, Milla went to kindergarten in Dnepropetrovsk[5]. She grew up mainly in Moscow, from where her mother came to Kyiv[6]. According to Milla, she was born in Ukraine “mostly by accident”[7].

In 1980[8], the family moved to London, then to Sacramento, USA, and then, seven months later, to Los Angeles. There, Galina tried to continue her acting career, but due to the language barrier she was unable to succeed, which is why she and her husband worked as servants for some time. In particular, they were cleaners and cooks in the house of director Brian De Palma. Some time after moving to Los Angeles, Bogic and Galina divorced. A few years later, Bogich started an affair with a certain Argentinean woman, and from this relationship Milla has a younger half-brother, Marco (born in 1988), but due to her parents’ divorce, she rarely saw him.

Having started attending public schools in Los Angeles, Milla quickly, in three months, mastered the English language, but in schools other children still treated her with hostility due to the fact that her parents were from the Soviet Union (which was associated with a new round of Cold War)[9]. In 1994, Bogic was arrested and sentenced to 20 years for financial fraud with health insurance, but spent only five years in prison and was released in 1999 (according to Milla, prison was good for her father and changed him much more better side)[11]. At the initial stage, Galina was involved in Milla’s upbringing and promotion in show business, who later returned to cinema herself.

In the modeling business since the age of 9, she first appeared on the cover of the Italian magazine “Lei”. Later, the famous American photographer Richard Avedon offered her a photo shoot for Mademoiselle magazine. When the magazine editor found out the model's age, he rushed to take down Jovovich's photo. Only after a warning from Avedon were the photographs restored. The problem of attracting minors to show business became the subject of conversation on American talk shows for several months. This year, Milla appeared on the covers of 15 magazines. As a seventh grader, 12-year-old Milla dropped out of school to finally focus on modeling. In 1994, at age 19, she became a naturalized US citizen.

Model business

One day, Galina Loginova brought her 11-year-old daughter to the famous photographer Carlos Reynosa. He admired the unusual beauty of young Milla Jovovich so much that he recommended her to the Prima agency. They signed a contract with the girl and arranged a photo shoot under the direction of Herb Ritts. In 1986, Jovovich appeared on the covers of the Italian magazine Lei and the London edition of The Face.

It was there that the legendary photographer Richard Avedon first saw her, who invited the young model to shoot for the women's magazine Mademoiselle. The management opposed the publication of Jovovich's photo in a publication intended for an adult female audience, because the girl was only 11 years old. But Avedon stood his ground until the last moment; the photographer even threatened to refuse to work with the publishing house if they did not publish Jovovich’s photographs.

The scandal-tinged story had a very positive impact on Milla’s popularity: her name and photo appeared in the news of popular tabloids. For several months, all talk shows in the country discussed the problems of attracting minors to show business, citing the incident with photographs of a young model.

Milla Jovovich signed two lucrative contracts with the legendary publishing houses Vogue and Cosmopolitan, becoming the face of many famous brands, ranging from the Revlon cosmetics brand to world fashion leaders Christian Dior, Calvin Klein and others.

In 2003, legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace called Jovovich his “favorite supermodel,” and a year later Forbes magazine placed the girl’s name on the list of the world’s richest models.

Milla's height is 1.74 meters. Even today she is in excellent physical shape and from time to time accepts offers to appear in photo shoots for fashion magazines.

Three years after the accident, the British woman began a legal battle. The woman is trying to prove that the collision was the fault of the operator and is demanding compensation. Olivia lay in a coma for seventeen days, and when she came to her senses, in her room there were bouquets from Mila Jovovich, Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Karen Gillan, whom she once replaced on the set.

Movies

World fame in the modeling business opened the doors to Hollywood for Milla. At the age of 13, she made her film debut in the television film “Night Train to Kathmandu,” which began her biography in cinema. In the same year, the film “The Merger of Two Moons” by Zalman King was released, where the actress played young Samantha Delongpre.

Jovovich's real breakthrough in cinema was the acclaimed American drama Return to the Blue Lagoon, in which she played Lilly, the main character of the film. According to the script, she had to appear naked in the frame.

The fame that befell the aspiring artist turned out to be very controversial and with a scandalous aftertaste. In 1991, Milla Jovovich was nominated for "Best Young Actress in a Motion Picture" and "Worst New Star" at the Golden Raspberry Awards. After filming the comedy “Dazed and Confused,” the girl became completely disillusioned with cinema and decided to move to Europe, where she took up music.

The artist's return to the big screen turned out to be truly grandiose and impressive. In Europe, Milla Jovovich met director Luc Besson, who was casting for his new project “The Fifth Element.” Among three hundred other contenders for the role of Lilla, he chose Jovovich, who later helped Besson come up with a native language for her character. “Divine Language” consisted of only 400 words, but they were quite enough for the actress to communicate with the director.

Milla's partner on the set was the cult actor and Hollywood star Bruce Willis, as well as the legendary Briton Gary Oldman. For the sake of her role, Milla Jovovich completely abandoned performing on stage, hanging out in clubs and other pleasures of life, concentrating on work. Her efforts paid off: The Fifth Element brought her worldwide fame and star status.

Milla Jovovich has received many nominations for prestigious awards, but not without criticism. James Berardinelli called her performance "very impressive, although not dependent on acting ability or dialogue."

Further collaboration with director Besson was less successful. The actress played the role of Joan of Arc in the historical film of the same name. Six months before the start of filming, it became known that another actress was approved for the role of Jeanne, and the director left the project. After legal proceedings due to failure to fulfill the terms of the contract, Besson rewrote the script and began work on his version of the film called The Messenger. For her role, Milla Jovovich was again nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award, but she was lucky to play with such stars as Dustin Hoffman, John Malkovich and Vincent Cassel.

One of the most successful films with Jovovich’s participation was the film “Resident Evil” based on the computer game of the same name, which was released on big screens in 2002. Milla Jovovich was a longtime fan of the game and, having learned about the upcoming filming, stated that she was the only actress worthy of starring in this film.

To play Alice, Milla Jovovich spent a lot of time studying martial arts: she performed almost all the stunts in the film herself. The fantastic horror film “Resident Evil” was released in 2002 and immediately gained commercial success, its receipts exceeded its budget many times over. For this work, the star was nominated for the Saturn Award as best actress.

In 2005, Milla Jovovich starred in the sensational American-Italian project by Francesco Vezzoli “Caligula”, on the set of which she met such famous colleagues as Helen Mirren, Benicio Del Toro and Gerard Butler.

In subsequent years, Milla Jovovich took part in the filming of several sequels to “Resident Evil,” which were warmly received by audiences around the world.

The artist continued her collaboration with director Paul Anderson, and in 2011 appeared in the adventure film based on the works of Alexandre Dumas “The Musketeers.” Milla Jovovich played the role of the insidious Milady De Winter, who, together with the Duke of Buckingham, played by the inimitable Orlando Bloom, opposes the main characters.

Despite very lukewarm reviews from critics, the film did well at the box office, and renowned director Quentin Tarantino even included it in his list of the best films of 2011.

Milla Jovovich also stars in Russian films. In 2010, the comedy “Freaks” was released, in which the artist appeared with colleagues Ivan Urgant and Konstantin Khabensky. To promote and advertise the project, the Hollywood star took part in the humorous TV show “ProjectorParisHilton.”

Music

In 1988, Milla Jovovich sent her demo tapes to SBK Records and signed a contract with them, but due to a very busy work schedule, she released her first record called The Divine Comedy only in 1994.

When recording her debut disc, Jovovich was inspired by Ukrainian folk music, as well as musical works based on The Divine Comedy. The album was highly praised by critics and warmly received by music lovers, which allowed the singer to continue working in this direction. In 1998, Milla Jovovich released her second album, The People Tree Sessions.

A year later, the singer, together with musician Chris Brenner, founded the experimental group Plastic Has Memory, in which she worked not only as a vocalist, but also wrote lyrics for new songs and played the electric guitar. The team took part in many shows, but never recorded a full album.

Personal life

Milla Jovovich's personal life is largely intertwined with her film career. For some time she was married to her Dazed and Confused co-star Sean Andrews, but their relationship did not last, and the marriage was annulled after 2 months at the request of the actress's mother.

The last days of pregnancy for 44-year-old Milla Jovovich are difficult. On social networks, the actress admitted that she had gained 22 kilograms. Because of this, the star of “The Fifth Element” has difficulty moving, and the celebrity suffers from swollen limbs. “Every day it becomes more and more difficult to walk, but I am happy that the pregnancy is going well and the baby is developing normally. She should be born on time,” Milla wrote on the microblog.

Jovovich tries to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Most often, the actress leaves the house in the company of her eldest daughter and husband. Relatives support Milla in everything and accompany her during visits to the doctor.

The paparazzi managed to photograph the artist during one of her walks in Beverly Hills. For the family outing, Milla chose a comfortable outfit - a loose striped T-shirt, jeans and flat boots.

According to Milla Jovovich, during pregnancy she does not deny herself anything. The star also does not diet. “I can admit that during this pregnancy I barely exercised because I became super paranoid and tried to be as careful as possible to avoid any possible risk of miscarriage,” Milla shared.

Note that the celebrity’s previous pregnancy ended tragically. Last spring, Jovovich told fans that in 2017 she had to have an emergency abortion. “Being four and a half months pregnant and filming in Eastern Europe, I went into premature labor. I said I wanted to be conscious throughout the entire procedure, and it was one of the worst memories of my life. I still have nightmares. I was alone and helpless. Thank God, I found a way out of my personal hell,” the actress admitted.

Milla Jovovich's husband, director Paul Anderson, helped her cope with depression. The couple met on the set of the film “Resident Evil.” In 2009, the lovers got married. Two years before the wedding, Milla gave birth to Paul's daughter, Ava. In 2015, the couple’s second heiress, Dashiel, was born.

Let us remember that this is the actress’s third marriage. She was previously in a relationship with actor Shawn Andrews. Today, the American-Russian star, beloved by millions, is in demand in her profession and is happy in her personal life. In 2020, the paparazzi managed to photograph the entire family: Milla Jovovich with her husband, children and two pets walked along the embankment, taking a break from the intense filming period and work in the new film “Shock and Awe”, in which she starred with Alec Baldwin, Jessica Biel and Tommy Lee Jones. The filming of the project took place in New Orleans, so the star was forced to leave her family for a long time.

In December 2020, Milla Jovovich visited Tokyo at the premiere of the new film “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.” The actress did not arrive at the premiere alone, but together with her beautiful daughter Ever Gabo and her husband Paul Anderson. In February 2020, Milla Jovovich visited the “Evening Urgant” show, where she talked about the latest episode of the “Resident Evil” franchise, what it’s like to raise a child while starring in a zombie movie, and what hobby turns her into a real Russian wife.

The actress speaks excellent Russian and is proud of her Slavic origins. “The most Russian American actress,” as Milla is often called, regularly indulges fans with fresh photographs on her own Instagram page, on which she has 1.8 million subscribers.

Fashion trends in Milla Jovovich's clothing

Home / Fashion and style

Milla Jovovich's image can undoubtedly be called ideal, despite the large size of her legs, non-standard figure and multi-colored eyes.

However, one can guess that the perfection of her appearance is the result of the work of image makers and stylists on her clothes. The actress's wardrobe has become the embodiment of an irresistible style that hides the flaws of her appearance.

The first changes in Jovovich's wardrobe became noticeable thanks to her husband, French director Luc Besson, who brought elegance to his wife's youth image.

Before their marriage had time to fall apart, Milla’s romantic image again turned into daring and hooligan.

Long, elegant outfits gave way to ultra-short dresses, which emphasized the beauty and length of the actress’s legs.

Milla's second husband, Paul Andersen, influenced his wife's style no less than Luke.

Experiencing a wonderful pregnancy, Milla began to look different again, paying attention to her wardrobe. More and more often she began to be seen in voluminous dresses and leggings.

Having quickly regained her previous slimness after giving birth, it was impossible not to notice Jovovich's chiseled figure thanks to the tight-fitting women's stylish suits.

Now, dressing simply and tastefully, the actress cannot help but be the center of attention at social events.

The secret of her impeccable appearance is that Mila skillfully highlights the advantages of her appearance with the help of accessories, designer clothing and shoes.

So, for example, Milla prefers open sandals to closed shoes, high boots to ankle boots, and lately she has been wearing long asymmetrical sundresses, which simultaneously emphasize her tall stature and slender figure.

It cannot be said that Jovovich has completely abandoned the everyday “casual” style, which is characterized by slight negligence. On the contrary, the actress still prefers comfortable jeans, long pullovers and closed blouses.

Her clothes contain many elements of retro and hippie styles, as well as vintage style.
