History of the holiday
On November 4 (October 22, old style), 1612, the people's militia under the leadership of Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky stormed Kitay-Gorod and liberated Moscow from the Polish-Lithuanian invaders. Russian troops marched to the Kremlin in a religious procession with the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God - the defender of the Russian land.
In 1630, the Kazan Cathedral was built on Red Square. In 1649, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich declared November 4 a public holiday - the Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, in memory of the liberation of Moscow from the Polish-Lithuanian troops. After the October Revolution of 1917, the tradition of celebrating this celebration was interrupted.
In September 2004, the Interreligious Council of Russia proposed establishing a holiday on November 4 - National Unity Day. Decree of the President of the Russian Federation V. Putin No. 200-FZ of December 29, 2004 amended Article 1 of the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 No. 32-FZ “On days of military glory and memorable dates of Russia” and Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation No. 197- Federal Law of December 30, 2001. November 4 – National Unity Day became a day of military glory and a holiday.

What church holiday is today December 25, 2020: Spiridon Solstice
During his lifetime, Saint Spyridon Solstice possessed the gift of healing. He saved people from hunger and drought. In ancient times, on the holiday of Spyridon Solstice, people predicted the weather for the whole year. Also, on this day it was customary to protect the house from evil forces and bake round bread.
The folk holiday Spiridon Solstice is celebrated on December 25, 2018 (the old style date is December 12). On this day, believers of the Orthodox Church honor the memory of St. Spyridon of Trimythous. Among the common people, the saint received the nickname Revolution, since people believe that he turns the sun so that it always shines for people.
Spyridon was born at the end of the 3rd century in Cyprus into a family of simple Christians. From childhood, he tended sheep and led a modest, godly lifestyle. Having reached the age of maturity, he married, and his wife bore him children. A few years later, the soul of his wife left the world, and Spiridon began to serve the Lord God even more diligently. Before his eyes was always the example of David, Jacob and Abraham, who were distinguished by meekness, simplicity and love for strangers.
For his good deeds, Spiridon was awarded a wonderful gift. He began to heal people and cast out demons from them. Soon he was appointed bishop of the city of Trimifunt. While at the pulpit, Spyridon performed many miracles, but did not deviate from the established church rules and continued to lead a respectable life, distinguished by hard work and kindness.
Traditions and rituals on Spiridon Solstice
The main traditions on December 25 are prohibition of work, rituals to get rid of evil spirits.
Our ancestors called this day Spiridon's Turn, or simply the Solstice, since from December 25 the night began to decrease and the day began to increase. The peasants said that from this day on the sun turns to summer, and winter to frost. According to legend, Spiridon himself turns the luminary and makes sure that it does not hide from people: “After Spiridon, even at the leap of a sparrow, may the day come.”
On Spiridonov's day, as people said, the sun itself dressed in a festive sundress, got into a cart and rode to warm countries. The kingdom of darkness was coming. Winter, dressed in a bear coat, began to walk through the villages and knock on roofs and walls, forcing women to heat the stove harder. This time was considered dangerous, because the forces of light and the forces of darkness were fighting each other, and the peasants tried to help the sun return as quickly as possible in order to defeat the spirits hostile to man.
For this purpose, snow women (idols of winter) were sculpted in the courtyards and round dances were performed around them. Women baked round bread on which a cross was pressed. Both the round loaf and the round dance were considered symbols of the sun. When it began to get dark, the whole village went out into the courtyard and lit fires so that the sun would quickly find its way home.
In the morning they shouted loudly: “Sunny, turn around! Red, light up! Red sun, hit the road." The youth climbed the highest hills and hillocks and began to invite the sun, inviting it to return home. And the owners of the houses walked around their huts with all their outbuildings in a circle, thereby putting the sign of the sun on their property and driving away evil spirits.
Immediately after Spiridonov’s day, the housewife stuck a sickle into the lintel, and the owner wedged an ax into the threshold so that the power of these tools would be transferred to the house and protect it from evil spirits. Sharp steel has long been considered the best amulet against the undead.
Traditionally, on this day a loaf is baked and a cross is made on it. It is believed that such a symbol of the sun can protect against evil spirits. You can also protect your house from evil spirits with the help of an ax, which must be driven into the threshold of the hut.
On Spiridon Solstice, chickens are given grain from the right sleeve. According to legend, this helps them lay more eggs. On this day, bonfires are traditionally lit so that the sun does not forget the way home.
Signs
People predicted the weather on Spiridonov's day. If the wind blew from the north, then cold weather set in, and if from the south, then vice versa. The sun, which shone brightly on this holiday, foreshadowed frosty weather during the New Year's celebrations. The wind that stopped blowing on the Day of Spyridon Solstice predicted a rich harvest. The weather that lasted for 12 days after this church holiday could tell about the heat and cold for the whole year.
The sparrows, hiding in their nests, spoke of severe frosts. If there was heavy fog at dawn, it means early spring should come. People born on December 25 love to live in harmony with themselves. They find a common language with the outside world well. In order to maintain inner balance, they should wear alexandrite stone.
The weather on the Spiridon Solstice is used to judge the weather for the New Year (December 31).
If the morning turns out to be cloudy, then spring will be early.
If sparrows begin to carry fluff into their nests, expect severe frosts.
If the wind changes direction several times on this day, then the harvest next year will be glorious.
If the sun shines all day, then on Christmastide the weather will also be clear.
If the juniper begins to bend, wait for a snowstorm.
If pets hide in a stall, it will soon snow heavily.
Church holiday today 12/25/2018: Christmas among Western Christians
Christmas can be called the greatest holiday, which was established in memory of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Christmas is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world. On the 25th, Christmas is celebrated not only by Catholics, but also by other Orthodox countries around the world.
The very first information about Christians celebrating Christmas appeared back in the 4th century. As for the real date of birth of Jesus, this is a controversial question and so far no one can give a clear answer. But December 25 was chosen because it is associated with the pagan solar celebration of the Birth of the Invincible Sun that took place on that day. After him in Rome, the adoption of Christianity was filled with new content. The holiday of Christmas has 5 days of celebration and 6 days of post-festival. On the eve of the celebration, a particularly strict fast is observed, which is called Christmas Eve. According to tradition, the Christmas Eve fast ends when the first evening star appears in the sky.
Holiday today, December 25, 2020, in the world: Nardugan
If you translate the word Nardugan from Turkic, it will mean born of the sun. It symbolizes the cult of the Sun. The celebration occurs just at the time when daylight hours begin to increase. The event starts on the winter solstice and is celebrated until Christmas from December 25 to January 7. Nardugan, one might say, is almost the same Christmastide.
The main celebrations unfold as daylight hours increase. At the same time, the sun intensifies, and according to legend, the dark forces recede. The event symbolizes the awakening of nature and the celebration of life. Costumed people went from house to house on holiday and wished goodness and joy to all their neighbors. It was customary to treat the mummers as at carols. On this day, girls also loved to tell fortunes.

General holidays in January
Unlike December, the January weekend consists of holiday weekends and work weekends.
We have already found out that according to the law in January we have 8 days of holiday weekends in a row, plus calendar working days are added to them: 12–13, 19–20, 26–27 , i.e. another 6 days.
It turns out that in January we rest for only 14 days, which at first glance is not enough compared to the same December, when (we have already found out) we will rest for 10 days. But the point here is that the holiday weekend of 5 and 6 coincides with working days off, that is, we must add two more days off.
However, such coincidences are legally regulated by government regulations and decrees based on the appropriateness of using working time. The same government resolution that we talked about above when we discussed the postponement of December 29 to December 31 also recorded another postponement at the discretion of the government, approved by the Prime Minister of the country.
This transfer is the transfer of January 5 and 6 to May 2 and 3, i.e., the missing two days will be returned to us, but in May. This decision suits everyone; in winter we will have 10 days off, and in May our days off will be 5 days, which is good news.
