Many women dream of reducing the time spent applying makeup in the morning. Brunettes are the luckiest in this regard. Often, owners of dark hair shades have thick black eyelashes and may not paint them with mascara. And blondes and red-haired girls are forced to devote most of their time to the beauty of their eyes. If you are tired of constantly using mascara and watching all day to see if it has fallen off, then you can always resort to tinting your eyelashes. How to dye eyelashes? Is this procedure harmful to the eyes? We will answer these and some other questions in our article.
Benefits of eyelash tinting
The procedure for tinting eyelashes at home has several advantages. The first is saving time. The girl does not need to adapt to the master and give up everything for the sake of the procedure.
The second important advantage is saving the family budget. The cost of doing it yourself at home is significantly lower. It does not include the price for the services of a master, salon rental and other components. As a result, beautiful eyelashes can be obtained at minimal cost.
Tinting your eyelashes yourself is much more comfortable. A girl can carefully control her movements, act as carefully as possible and not be afraid that the master will hurt or unpleasant her because of his inattention. In the salon, they often feel uncomfortable due to the close attention of others and the unusual environment.
Contraindications to the staining procedure
The list of contraindications to the beauty procedure should be studied first.
You cannot paint eyelashes with special paint if:
- the girl has any diseases of the eyes, mucous membranes, eyelids, otherwise the chemicals in the cosmetic product can only worsen the condition;
- there is an allergy to any component of the coloring substance;
- The fair sex has sensitive eyelid skin;
- the girl wears contact lenses, which make her eyes more susceptible to any irritants (in this case, it is not recommended to even resort to salon coloring).
If the procedure has already been carried out, then the entire next day you should refrain from going to the bathhouse, sauna, or swimming pool. It is also advisable not to use oil-based makeup removers for 3 weeks. They quickly wash the dye out of the hairs.
Is it harmful?
This procedure cannot cause any particular harm, with the exception of two cases:
- If the work is carried out correctly and carefully, and most importantly according to the instructions, then it will cause no harm;
- If you have individual contraindications, a reaction to the components used in it. This can manifest itself in the form of allergies, itching, burning and direct loss of eyelashes.
In order to protect yourself from redness around the eyes, it is recommended to soften the skin with a soothing/nourishing cream after the procedure.
Before applying the paint, you need to carry out a test on the perception of this paint. To do this, you need to apply a little paint on the inside of your hand and if after one day you do not find any redness or irritation, then you can apply the mixture directly to the eyelashes.
Which paint to choose for tinting eyelashes?
Eyelash dyeing at home is successful only if the correct coloring agent for the procedure is chosen. It is especially important to study its composition before purchasing.
It is advisable that the paint does not contain resorcinol, peroxide and ammonia. These substances can cause severe allergies. Unfortunately, most popular manufacturers add them to their products.
You also need to pay attention to the waiting time during the dyeing process. If it exceeds 20 minutes, then the procedure is too long and uncomfortable. It is better to choose quick paints.
Dark-haired girls should always purchase black dye products. If you take a shade that is too light, it may simply be invisible on your hair.
It’s great if you have the opportunity to purchase phytocosmetics with a mild hypoallergenic formula. Such products are more expensive, but they are prepared on a plant basis and do not harm the body.
If, despite contraindications, a girl still decides to dye her eyelashes while wearing lenses, then she needs to choose exclusively low-fat preparations. To make sure that the paint will not cause dangerous reactions, it is recommended to first conduct an allergy test and check how the skin reacts to the product. You can use the composition if a reaction has not occurred within 20 hours.
How long does the effect last?
The eyelash dye is quite durable and lasts for three or even four weeks. Then after a while, if you like this procedure, you can repeat it again. It is advisable to repeat the procedure with the same paint that you used before, since if you change the paint that suits you, you risk that another one may no longer suit you, or cause any side effects due to getting used to it. the same means.
How often can you do this? Professionals in the cosmetics industry recommend dyeing your eyelashes no more than once a month. Failure to comply with this may result in reactions such as:
- irritation of the skin under the eyes;
- loss of eyelashes and their complete depletion, which leads to a long abstinence from dyeing and a course of restorative masks (in some cases, not even one).
Natural dyes (henna, basma)
Today you can find natural eyelash dyes on sale. They have only one drawback - using such products is somewhat more difficult than chemical compounds and you will have to try hard to achieve the ideal result.
Among plant dyes, the most popular are henna and basma. Both options do not cause allergies and are absolutely safe for the female body. Henna is used to obtain a lighter brown shade, basma - for black. If desired, you can mix both products in different proportions and get unusual, interesting shades.
Hue | Henna (in parts) | Basma (in parts) |
Bronze | 2 | 1 |
Black | 1 | 2 |
Chestnut | 1 | 1 |
If natural mixtures are used to color the hairs, then the exposure time on the eyelashes will need to be increased. The procedure may even have to be repeated. But natural dye also strengthens hairs and accelerates their growth.
It is very important to use only fresh basma and/or henna. The latter in its pure form is not suitable for dark-haired, dark-skinned girls, as it gives a noticeable copper tint.
Special paints
Special chemical eyelash dyes are much easier to use than natural ones. The result is excellent with less effort.
The following store-bought products are considered the best:
- Bonahrom (from Schwarzkopf) – has no odor, does not sting the eyes, gives a bright beautiful color, but has only 3 shades in the palette;
- Enigma from ESTEL - with a huge range of colors from emerald to burgundy, suitable even for sensitive skin, but contains ammonia;
- Rocolor is a budget paint, with a convenient container for mixing and a brush for application, but with only 2 colors in the palette.
Packages with ready-made products always contain detailed instructions for their use. This greatly simplifies the procedure. In addition to ordinary paints, there are also special laminating compounds on sale today. The substances from their formula fill the voids in the hairs and make the hair look healthier and the color richer.
Regardless of what kind of paint you purchase, you should always carefully study its composition first. The best options will have most natural ingredients: oils, vitamins, plant extracts, wax. But hydrogen peroxide, resorcinol and ammonia can cause not only allergies, but also severe irritation and even swelling of the eyelids.
Selecting a shade
When choosing a shade for your eyelashes, you need to remember that they should be the darkest hairs on your face. Even the eyebrows will be slightly lighter. Experts suggest: ideally, eyelashes are 1-2 shades darker than the hair on your head.
The black palette is not suitable for blondes and light brown girls. It is better for them to turn their attention to products of a gray shade. For red-haired representatives of the fair sex, black is also not suitable, but they can choose brown or dark brown. If the curls are bright, you can even take chestnut or any color with a red tint.
Dark-haired girls are allowed to use different shades of the black palette.
For bright brunettes - even blue-black. But a graphite shade suits gray hair well.
can also help with choosing the right eyelash shade :
- winter: all shades of black and gray (dark) paint;
- spring: brown and dark brown paint;
- summer: purple, gray and black paint;
- autumn: burgundy, black, brown paint.
Today there is a special computer program that, using photos, helps you choose the perfect shade of eyelashes and eyebrows for a girl. It should be used before the coloring procedure.
What about eyelash extensions?
Today, eyelash extensions are a very common procedure. And there are many peculiarities regarding how to paint eyelashes with paint for girls who already have false eyelashes. You can paint them, but as a rule there is no need for such a procedure. They are already rich and long, and paint under some circumstances can only spoil all the beauty. The thing is that such eyelashes are applied using a special glue, and therefore if dye gets there, it can damage or completely lose this adhesive base.

When not to dye eyelashes
There are periods in a woman’s life when it is not recommended to dye any hair. For example, during menstruation. During this period, due to hormonal imbalance in the body, the result of the procedure may differ greatly from the desired one - you may end up with a completely unexpected shade or the paint may not work at all.
If products containing chemicals are used, the procedure is prohibited for women during pregnancy and lactation. This is especially dangerous in the first months of the “interesting situation.”
Harmful components of paint can affect the development of the baby’s brain and vital organs. Even the fumes of the product that the girl will inhale during the procedure are dangerous.
Step-by-step instructions for tinting your own eyelashes
Eyelash dyeing at home is possible even without help. But in the process you need to be extremely careful and make sure that the coloring agent does not get into your eyes. Usually, only the first procedure is the most difficult. The next time you get used to it, the process becomes much easier.
Precautionary measures
When performing the discussed beauty procedure at home, you need to observe the following precautions:
- Be sure to remove the lenses before starting coloring, otherwise the paint may damage them irrevocably;
- you must act extremely carefully and do everything possible to prevent the coloring composition from getting into your eyes;
- if you still cannot avoid trouble, you will need to immediately remove the paint with a cotton swab and rinse your eyes with plenty of clean warm water;
- To protect the skin around the eyes, before the procedure it should be covered with a thick layer of any fatty cream.
The allergy test mentioned above is also required. It should be done about a day before the procedure.
Required Tools
The entire dyeing process usually takes 12-15 minutes. The procedure does not require purchasing any rare expensive materials and instruments. The most important thing is to choose a suitable container for mixing coloring compounds. It is better to take a container made of glass or porcelain for this purpose.
Metal bowls are prohibited for use, as this material reacts with paint and as a result the color of the composition may not be the one the girl expects.
You also need to prepare:
- a large mirror (it will help you closely monitor the entire work process and avoid many mistakes);
- paint brush (left over old mascara is good for this purpose, but you can also use regular cotton swabs);
- cotton pads (they are needed not only to remove excess paint, but also to protect the lower and upper eyelids);
- scissors (to cut cotton pads);
- rich face cream/vaseline (to lubricate the area around the eyes).
Some eyelash paints also come with everything you need to apply them. For example, a special brush and a mixing container. Such sets are a little more expensive, but very convenient to use.
Preparation of the coloring composition
Natural paints are very easy to dilute or mix with each other. They are first poured with hot water to obtain a homogeneous consistency without lumps, and then carefully combined. The exact proportions for mixing henna and basma are in the table above.
To prevent the appearance of an unsightly greenish tint in the composition, you need to add a pinch of ground coffee or 3-4 drops of strong chamomile infusion to it.
Ready-made store-bought paints are diluted with an oxidizing agent. For example, take 2 drops of peroxide per 2 ml of coloring composition. The latter can be replaced with a hydroperide tablet dissolved in water. The composition is mixed exclusively with a wooden stick.
Eyelash preparation
It is very important to prepare not only the coloring compositions, but also your eyelashes and the areas around them.
To do this you need:
- Cleanse your eyes and the skin around them with a light, oil-free cleanser.
- Degrease eyelashes with a primer or suitable toner.
- Comb hairs with a clean brush.
- Apply a thick layer of cream (oily) or cosmetic Vaseline around the eyes.
- Cut the cotton pad into two equal parts and place the halves under the eyelashes on top and bottom.
If possible, it is best to ask your loved ones for help with tinting your eyelashes. You won't be able to quickly complete the task on your own.
Applying composition to eyelashes
When the eyelashes and skin around the eyes are prepared, you can dilute the coloring composition and begin the procedure. You need to apply the prepared composition to the hairs. This can be done with a special brush, an old one left over from mascara, or an ordinary cotton swab.
It is more convenient to apply paint from the roots of the eyelashes to the ends (necessarily in a thick layer). All coloring movements must be clear and accurate. The procedure will be the same for both store-bought and natural formulations.
The exposure time of the paint on the eyelashes depends on the chosen product. It is always indicated on the packaging. Thus, the popular product Estelle Enigma takes up to 10 minutes, and Rocolor takes up to 15 minutes. Less common are paints with an exposure time on eyelashes of up to 25 minutes.
Natural remedies will have to be left on the hairs longer. Minimum period – 35-40 minutes. Otherwise, the dye simply won’t take.
Removing Dye
Eyelash dyeing at home is completed by removing the dye. No special means are used for this. Regular warm water is enough.
You can wash your face directly under the tap or using a cotton swab and a bowl of liquid. The procedure must be repeated until clear water begins to flow from the eyelashes. All that remains is to blot your hair with dry cotton swabs and wipe off the paint stains from your face.
Is it possible to increase length and thickness with dyeing?
You can dye your eyelashes to make them long and thick using high-quality natural dyes. It is worth dyeing your hairs once a month, they will become lush, long, and to give them shape you can twist and bend them using special devices. Thanks to the composition of the coloring agents, it is possible to strengthen and stimulate the growth and thickness of hairs.
Natural makeup is more popular among the fair sex. It allows you to save a lot of time and money needed for purchasing and applying cosmetics. Coloring allows you to give an expressive, spectacular natural look to your eyelashes that will enhance your appearance.

Beautiful and thick eyelashes are the dream of many women. They brightly highlight the eyes against the background of the face and emphasize their shape. Using different methods of tinting eyelashes, you can lengthen them or increase their volume. This look creates a special effect and attracts attention.
You have to apply mascara to your eyes several times a day to renew them. This is quite inconvenient, especially when there is not enough time for it. Eyelash tint products come to the rescue. As for the paint itself, it is not particularly durable. The bright and rich color will last no more than two weeks after painting. But this is the only option not to spoil thin and fragile eyelashes with a constant layer of mascara. Using paint, you can make them visible and expressive for a long period of time without constantly applying mascara. This significantly saves time in the morning or evening. But not many people think about how harmless the composition of eyelash dye is.
The harm of paint can manifest itself on an individual basis when a person reacts to some of the components in it. This can manifest itself in the form of allergies, which provoke itching, burning along the eyelash line and their loss. The paint does not contain chemical components. Usually, high-quality paints from well-known cosmetic companies have confirmation and certificates of testing.
To avoid possible rashes and redness of the eye area, after painting it is recommended to soften the skin with a special soothing and nourishing cream. This will protect the delicate skin of the eyelids from the effects of coloring substances. For greater peace of mind, you should use the services of a professional cosmetologist in special salons. The cosmetologist will take the necessary measures to reduce the skin's reaction to the paint if this happens.
Many people dye their eyelashes at home to save money and time. To do this, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations of professionals. The box with eye paint should contain a detailed description of the use of the coloring agent, the composition and care of the eyelashes after painting.
Painting eyelashes is not so harmful; this application will eliminate the constant application of harmful mascara. And their impact is much more dangerous for eyelashes than paint. After each painting, do not forget to use various strengthening agents - balms, oils and creams. From time to time, eyelashes need a break from both mascara and constant coloring. After a long day, you should definitely remove your makeup before going to bed.
At certain moments, the durability of mascara or eyelash pencil is not enough, and sometimes there is simply no opportunity or desire to wear makeup. In the summer heat, on vacation or during a long business trip, special long-lasting eyelash paints replace regular cosmetics.
In the summer, very often in beauty salons there is no end to clients who want to dye their eyelashes. Women simply don’t want to waste time on daily eye makeup, especially since in the heat they have to touch it up several times a day. And the eyes also need a vacation. A special coloring composition will help give your eyelashes a lasting shade, and for this you don’t have to go to an expensive salon. You can dye your eyelashes yourself. How to do it? Read on!
Eyelash care after coloring
After coloring for about 20 hours, you cannot use any cosmetics for the eyes and eyelashes. It is also advisable to avoid swimming in the sea, visiting a bathhouse, sauna, or solarium.
Dyed eyelashes always require special care. At home, you can nourish them with natural oils (even ordinary olive or burdock), as well as any products that contain vitamins A and E.
It is not advisable to treat eyelashes after dyeing with cleansing compounds. For example, scrubs, soap, foam, tonic. You need to cleanse your face carefully, avoiding touching the hairs.
Composition and types of paints
The composition of paints can be natural or composed of chemicals. Natural dyes include henna and basma, which are widely consumed. They carefully color hairs, stimulate growth, nourish, and saturate with important elements necessary for eyelash care. After using natural dyes, the eyelashes become long and fluffy; all that remains is to give them a bend by curling them with a special tool.
Branded paints made from chemical elements can cause burns, allergies or hair loss.
When choosing a coloring agent, take into account the composition that has the maximum amount of natural ingredients and a minimum of chemicals that harm the structure. The following paints are popular among the fair sex:
- Rocolor - due to its balanced composition, it has a minimal effect on the structure of the hairs. Helps create thick, expressive, natural-looking eyelashes, giving them a light matte shade. The coloring product contains castor oil, which nourishes, moisturizes the hairs, and helps strengthen them. Stays on eyelashes for about three weeks.
- Refectocil is a professional paint that does not affect the skin, hair structure and eyes. The package contains everything you need to carry out the process at home. The composition includes castor oil, which nourishes and moisturizes hairs. It prevents fragility and loss.
- Estelle Enigma is a hypoallergenic, ultra-soft paint. Suitable for women with different skin types and hair colors, has a large palette. Gives eyelashes a shimmering effect, decorating them with a shiny and natural shade.
When choosing the color of the dye, keep in mind that eyelashes are slightly darker than eyebrows. Brown tones suit blondes, and dark tones suit brunettes. You can dye your eyelashes with paint after a trial test for an allergic reaction.
Apply the substance to a clean area of the skin, leave for a while and rinse off; if no changes appear within 24 hours (the skin does not turn red, does not itch, there is no rash or burning), you can apply coloring. There are other contraindications for which the procedure is not permitted: the presence of eye diseases, pregnancy, individual intolerance to the components.
Cost of eyelash dyes
The cheapest eyelash dyes are natural. The cost of a bag of basma or henna starts from 17 rubles. A budget cream paint without a brush can be bought for 65 rubles.
The procedure for tinting eyelashes will allow a girl to forget about the daily application of mascara. At the same time, her look will always be bright and expressive. Even at home, painting can be done efficiently and get an ideal result.
