Sweater and dress: to be or not to be?

Many people believe that a dress does not need companions and is a self-sufficient piece of clothing. Yes, of course, a chic evening dress will look luxurious in splendid isolation, but simpler and lighter dresses can easily be complemented by other wardrobe elements. And since during the cold season everyone thinks about insulation, sweaters will be relevant.

Let the fact that tandems of dresses and sweaters are actively and often offered by designers at fashion shows instill confidence in you: if you look at the latest fashion shows, you will be convinced that such combinations are ultra-fashionable. Well, look at foreign and domestic stars: they also wear such things together, feel comfortable and look cool.

Sweater on a dress

Sweaters on dresses have long been worn not only by fashionistas, but also by all other representatives of the fair sex, because it is practical, comfortable, warm and stylish. The sweater provides excellent insulation, and the hem peeking out from under it adds femininity and adds some zest to the look. But to look truly stylish, you need to correctly create tandems.

Which sweater is suitable

Since the sweater is worn over a dress, it must be loose, otherwise the item will wrinkle the dress, crumple the hem and form unsightly folds that are noticeable from the outside. Choose models in casual style: loose straight cut or voluminous oversize. Variations with dropped shoulders are relevant. The bottom can be either loose (including with slits on the sides), or narrowed or secured with a loose elastic band. Any length of the sweater is allowed: to the waist or just above it, to the buttocks or to the hips.

As for the materials, they are completely different: coarse rustic knitting, thick or loose knitwear, bouclé, patterned openwork knitting, and so on. The density of the fabric depends on the time of year and, of course, on your preferences.

What dresses are appropriate

The choice of dresses that can be worn under sweaters is huge and practically unlimited, but depends on the style, occasion, goals and your preferences. Light dresses made of openwork or flowing materials such as chiffon, tulle, guipure, silk or satin, organza, viscose are more preferable. Then the hem will not form rough folds and puff up: it will lie beautifully and create a contrast with a thick and voluminous sweater.

The choice of dress models that can be worn under sweaters is also very wide. Try experimenting with tight-fitting sheaths, romantic new look or baby dolls with flared hems, trendy combinations, “noodle” models, shirts, as well as options with pleated hems.

Absolutely any length is allowed: from extreme mini to stylish midi and feminine maxi. The hem of the dress can either slightly peek out from under the elongated sweater, forming its beautiful frill, or be completely open. The choice is yours, but do not forget to take into account the features of your figure: if your legs are slender and beautiful, then why not show them off?

Advice! Under sweaters, it is better to wear dresses with either short or cropped narrow sleeves, or without them at all, so that the sleeves of the sweater fit freely and you are comfortable.

Combination rules

Let's look at the basic rules for wearing sweaters over dresses:

  1. Combine the necks of things correctly. So, if the dress has a high or medium neckline, then frame it with a fairly deep sweater neckline: round, boat, asymmetrical or V-shaped. And when choosing a dress with a deep neckline, choose sweaters with collars, draperies, stands and high necks.
  2. As for color combinations, they can be formed according to different principles. The first is a total look, which involves the creation of sets that almost completely match in color or are kept in the same shade. The second is monochrome, that is, a combination of different tones of one primary color. The third principle is contrast, which involves combining incompatible shades. The fourth principle is harmonious and generally accepted tandems (black and white, beige and blue, brown and beige). And the fifth principle is fashionable color blocking, in which different color blocks are included in the set.
  3. Are prints appropriate? Yes, quite, but only on one thing: either a sweater or a dress. And most often, dresses with patterns are chosen, which are complemented by plain sweaters. In this case, the bow does not look overly colorful, since the printed hem has a small area and does not catch the eye.
  4. The simpler and rougher the sweater, the more complex and feminine the dress can be. A simple top can be refined and refreshed with a pleated hem, with lace, flounces or ruffles, with cutouts, with different lengths and asymmetry.

Several stylish looks

Here are examples of stylish looks that use a dress and a sweater.

  • A light cream-colored chiffon dress will look good paired with a coarse-knit sweater in the color of cocoa and milk. The sweater is mid-thigh length, so we emphasize the waist with a wide brown belt.
  • A fitted blue dress made of thick material with a moderately flared skirt and a blue short sweater knitted in a cable pattern will make a stylish tandem. You can complement it with stylish heeled ankle boots.
  • A long dress with a multi-tiered floor-length skirt is made of fabric with small polka dots. It goes well with a loose casual sweater that matches the color of polka dots. The waist can be emphasized with a belt.
  • The dress has a fitted silhouette with a pleated skirt and is made of pine-colored fabric. It can be paired with a short chunky knit sweater in dark red. This combination will refresh your autumn or winter look. Additions to this ensemble should be neutral ones.
  • For work, you can choose a black sheath dress, tailored strictly to your figure and wear it with a shortened or, conversely, long white sweater. If you choose an elongated sweater, then the ensemble must be complemented with a strap.

What about outerwear, shoes and accessories?

How and with what can you wear a sweater with a dress? With almost anything. Let's start with choosing shoes. These can be ankle boots or rough boots, loafers or oxfords, ballet flats, abarcas or espadrilles, pumps or mules, boots with high loose tops or tight-fitting sexy boots, sneakers or slip-ons. Shoes are selected taking into account the time of year, the style of the bow, and the situation. So, on a date you should wear something beautiful, and for a long walk - something comfortable. In cool summers, late spring or early autumn, the legs can be as open as possible, and in cold weather they should be insulated.

Let's move on to outerwear. And in this case, the choice is also not limited: feel free to wear coats of different styles (capes, straight, fitted), leather jackets (including leather jackets), down jackets, fur vests and fur coats over a sweater with a dress (pay attention to eco-fur models , for example, “Cheburashki”).

Finally, accessories. The waist can be emphasized with a thin belt, which will look stylish with a voluminous sweater. The handbag is selected according to style and occasion. Images can also be complemented with headdresses: various hats and hats.

Advice! Under dresses combined with sweaters, you can wear not only tights, but also leggings and even jeans. Layering is trendy now.

Bamboo fiber

Today, children's dresses are knitted from this type of yarn.

The fabric is light, does not scratch children's skin, and does not cause allergic reactions. The threads are very thin, but at the same time they have sufficient strength.

Sweater under a dress

While the combination method described above is known to many, this one is just being introduced to the masses and is perceived with skepticism. But in fact, if you put together the combination correctly and think through the image, the sweater under the dress will look stylish and harmonious.

Which dress to choose

Since in this case the sweater will be on the bottom, the dress should be more spacious, not too tight-fitting to the body. And models with straps or without a top look most stylish over sweaters: combinations, sheaths, bandeaus, light or thick sundresses, shirts.

Good to know! Any length of the dress is allowed, so experiment and choose options to suit your figure.

What sweater to wear under a dress

The sweater should not be very dense, not too voluminous and fit snugly to the body. This could be a knitted turtleneck, a “noodle” or a tight knit sweater. Prefer a simple knitting, since a complex and voluminous one, firstly, will still close, secondly, it will add volume, and thirdly, it will awkwardly show under a thin dress.

Combination principles

The principles of combination will be approximately the same as for sets in which a sweater is worn over a dress:

  1. If you choose a dress with a neckline, with straps or a bandeau, then choose a sweater with a high or medium neck (close to the neck, stand-up, collar). And over a sweater with a deep neckline, you can wear a dress that is more closed at the top: with a collar, a high neck, or a collar (stand-up or turn-down).
  2. Remember the rules of color combinations.
  3. With prints, everything is also about the same, so you can wear a dress with a pattern on a plain sweater or, conversely, choose a printed bottom and complement it with a restrained, calm top.

About details

To look stylish and interesting, you need to remember the importance of accessories. Fashionistas usually declare their favorite to be a plain sweater dress, which can easily be paired with a variety of accessories. Let's watch and get inspired!

  • If your dress has a long, fitted cut, you can reveal all its beauty and femininity by combining it with a wide hat.

  • Knitwear can be complemented with a laconic chain or beads, and a dress made of thick thread can be decorated with a fashionable brooch.

  • Belts themselves are an absolute trend of the season. If you add such an accessory to a fitted or loose sweater, you are guaranteed to double the fashion trends. Not only a leather belt, but also textile accessories will look interesting.
