Childhood
Svetlana Khodchenkova was born in Moscow on January 21, 1983. The future actress spent her childhood in the village of Zheleznodorozhny near Moscow. The mother raised the baby alone - the father did not make any attempts to get to know his daughter until she came of age.
The family was sorely short of money; From the age of twelve, Svetlana helped her mother, who worked as a painter, janitor and cleaner, wash stairs for a tiny fee. In high school, the girl studied at a lyceum, where her classmates were children from wealthy families. Every day, self-doubt grew in Svetlana’s soul, and in order to overcome it, Khodchenkova filled out an application form for Slava Zaitsev’s modeling school.
The tall, slender blonde was gladly accepted into the course, and upon completion, she was invited to a successful modeling agency. The 16-year-old girl spent her first salary - a thousand dollars received after six months of filming in Japan - on installing a home telephone; as the actress recalled, her mother was infinitely happy and almost kissed the buttons of the device. However, very soon the young model began to receive unambiguous offers, and Svetlana left the modeling business, completely disappointed in its underside.
As a child, Svetlana dreamed of a career as a surgeon, but closer to her final exams she realized that medical work was not so sweet to her: biology and chemistry were not easy for her, and the sight of blood made her feel completely ill. So, after receiving her certificate in 2000, Khodchenkova entered the Institute of World Economy - that’s what her mother wanted. However, the girl did not even make it to the first session. Economics seemed extremely boring to her, and Svetlana transferred to the Faculty of Advertising, where, in her opinion, there should have been a lot of room for creativity, but even here only dry numbers awaited her.
The decision to become an actress came to Svetlana quite unexpectedly - the girl simply decided to try herself in this path. A couple of years ago, while filling out a form for a modeling agency, in the “Place of study” column, she wrote “Shchukin Theater School” - just like that. And it was the legendary “Pike” that she chose.
Before the exams, Sveta attended courses at the school for two months and eventually entered, and of the entire preparatory group, only Khodchenkova passed the competition.
Successful debut
Already in her first year, Svetlana Khodchenkova was noticed by the famous director Stanislav Govorukhin, who invited her to audition for the film “Bless the Woman.” The aspiring actress was offered to play the main character of the film - a girl named Vera, who is in love with the hero Alexander Baluev. The casting was successful - Govorukhin could not help but approve a beauty with a traditional Slavic appearance for the role.
It was difficult for Svetlana on the set: the age range of her heroine varied from 18 to 45 years. Make-up took at least an hour every day, and Svetlana had to “grow” from a carefree girl to a woman wise with life experience. In addition, the actress had to star in a “nude” scene - the moment when Svetlana’s heroine comes out of the sea. At first it was planned that the actress would swim in a swimsuit, but at the last moment Stanislav Govorukhin made adjustments to the episode. Svetlana did not argue with her patron, but in the future she immediately rejected such proposals.
Career blossoming
Fate worked out in such a way that Svetlana became a rising star of Russian cinema while still studying at Shchuka. It’s clear that the teachers, with a clear conscience, gave the girl “machine guns,” but her classmates whispered sarcastically behind her back, which greatly upset Sveta. So when Khodchenkova finally received her diploma in 2005, she breathed a sigh of relief and got to work hard, especially since she received more than enough offers.
In 2005, Svetlana Khodchenkova took part in several projects. First, there was the role of an Old Believer girl in “Picture Hunters,” then participation in the 12-episode project “Realtor” directed by Alexander Khvan, the film “Not by Bread Alone” by Stanislav Govorukhin and the series “Talisman of Love” with Tatyana Arntgolts and Lyubov Tolkalina.
Those close to Svetlana Khodchenkova had mixed reactions to the work in “Talisman of Love”. Some thought that the girl did not need to waste money on soap, while others believed that this act would help Sveta become financially independent. Govorukhin was the most upset about Svetlana’s participation in the series, once even declaring: “Svetka is a good girl, but she has no brains...”. True, he later added: “It all went into talent.” Nevertheless, the role of the medium Cassandra was well remembered by the audience.
In 2006, an accident happened to Svetlana - during a training session for the “Dancing on Ice” project, she slipped and hit her head. The actress woke up already in a hospital bed, in complete bewilderment - she had completely forgotten everything connected with her performance on ice. Doctors diagnosed a concussion and promised that his memory would return soon. And so it happened, but Khodchenkova had to forget about participating in the project.
Svetlana Khodchenkova’s next major project was Pavel Sanaev’s film “Kilometer Zero,” where her filming partners were Konstantin Kryukov and Alexander Lymarev. The work on the film was not without incidents, for example, in one of the scenes the actress had to appear naked. Mindful of the jealous nature of her husband (Vladimir Yaglych), she set a condition for the director: only her back should appear in the frame, otherwise she would refuse the role. Reluctantly, Sanaev agreed. Before filming the scene, Khodchenkova asked the make-up artist to cover her chest with a plaster - just in case. And at the premiere of the film, Svetlana, her husband and the entire audience saw her breasts covered with a snow-white piece of fabric.
In 2009, the film “Love in the City” was released, where the name of Svetlana Khodchenkova appeared in the credits next to Vera Brezhneva and Nastya Zadorozhnaya. The comedy film differed from Sveta’s usual genre of “new Russian melodrama,” but most viewers noted that Khodchenkova’s performance “looked very advantageous against the backdrop of the singers’ acting efforts.”
However, the actress soon returned to her favorite role in Roman Prosvirnin’s melodrama “When We Were Happy,” where Svetlana formed a harmonious creative union with Alexei Zubkov.
The remake of “Office Romance”, released in 2011, which brought together the best of Russian comedy cinema in its cast, could not do without Svetlana - she was cast in the role of the modern version of the heroine Alisa Freundlich. Ukrainian actor Vladimir Zelensky played the klutz Novoseltsev, Marat Basharov played Samokhvalov, Pavel Volya unexpectedly took the place of Liya Akhedzhakova, and the supporting performers were impressive: Ivan Okhlobystin, Nastya Zavorotnyuk, Alika Smekhova.

Personal life of Svetlana Khodchenkova
The actress met her husband Vladimir Yaglych at the Shchukin School. A young man, studying a year older, quickly made acquaintance with a pretty freshman, but romance was out of the question - the charming student was always in the company of some beauty from among his classmates, and Sveta could not think about anything besides studying, rehearsing for days.
The young people met again on the set of the series “My Prechistenka”, and a couple of months later - on the set of the series “Carousel”. Despite the fact that the characters of Khodchenkova and Yaglych were married in the plot, in real life they remained exclusively colleagues. Although, as Svetlana later admitted, Vladimir made an attempt to charm the girl while working on Carousel, but she simply did not understand his hints.
On the day of the premiere of Carousel, he called Svetlana and offered to celebrate in a restaurant. The quiet dinner was essentially their first real date; Soon the actors began dating.
The marriage proposal sounded like a bolt from the blue: in one of the conversations Yaglych suddenly declared: “That’s it! We need to start a family. Let's get married." Svetlana was in a state of slight shock for ten minutes, then said: “I agree!”

The wedding of Khodchenkova and Yagylch took place in 2005. At first, the newlyweds' life was full of bright colors and sincere feelings, but Svetlana's growing popularity and Vladimir's jealous disposition became an obstacle to a long-term relationship - in April 2011 they officially broke off the relationship.
Soon a new contender for the actress’s hand and heart was found - young businessman Georgy Petrishin. They dated for four years, and there were no signs of trouble, so the man decided to propose to his beloved beautifully. The curtain after the play “Love Story” with the participation of Khodchenkova had not yet had time to fall, and he had already burst onto the stage and dropped to one knee in front of Svetlana. The stunned and touched actress answered “Yes!” to thunderous applause from the audience. But at the beginning of 2020, shortly before the wedding, they quarreled to smithereens, and the ceremony was never destined to take place.

At the beginning of 2020, Svetlana spent a vacation in Bali with Georgy Petrishin, after which they went skiing together in Switzerland. The actress also celebrated her 35th birthday in the company of a businessman. Apparently, the old feelings did not have time to cool down, and the lovers gave their relationship another chance.

Svetlana Hodchenkova:
I am the kind of person who cannot leave the house without a watch or without jewelry. I can go out without makeup, without combing my hair, no matter how strange it may sound. But if I don’t have a watch or jewelry on, I internally feel undressed.
Anna Akhmatova, for example, did not wear a watch. She said a wonderful phrase: “I can’t have something ticking on me.”

The acting profession is a very dependent one. You don’t just have a week, months are planned out, and every day is scheduled by the hour. Even when you fly here for the festival, it would seem that you can relax, walk, watch a movie. No! Meetings, events, gatherings for them. And all this should fit into one day, for which I come.

Chatting with friends is always wonderful. But, rather, since I am an absolute “visual” person, I need to “change the picture”. It’s enough to just leave somewhere from Moscow for two days. It is desirable, of course, that there be good company, and I can already feel rested. I am one of those people for whom it is not enough to just lie by the sea and smell it... I need some kind of active program all the time: to go somewhere, watch something, and so on.
Perhaps, due to the necessity of this “active program”, you suddenly decided to try a new field of activity - you became a producer of a new film. They even learned about the film “She Has a Different Name” in Cannes. Although you yourself did not come there to present the project.
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out so that I could come to Cannes, because filming in two projects was just finishing. But the story of the relationship between mother and daughter, which formed the basis of the plot of director Veta Geraskina’s film “She Has a Different Name,” sits so deeply in me that I wanted to make it myself. And we don’t often have some deep women’s stories in cinema...

The creative process in this film is my role. Everything else is up to the director. How to play? How do I imagine? Not yet. But I understand that I will be a fairly responsible person. Our story is also about motherhood. However, it is impossible to imagine yourself as a mother when you are not yet a mother. Of course, I will gather around me a group of like-minded people who have gone through parental experience, they will help me.
What attracted you to this story?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
It's very different from what I've played before. And again, when you are offered ready-made material, you have to figure out a lot for yourself. And here, as we wrote the characters and some dialogues ourselves, everything is immediately clear. I even attended the edits; everything here was very close to me from the very beginning.
Are you also a co-writer of the script?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
No. But I understand with sweat and blood that this is already my character. I can feel my character one hundred percent at the moment. I really want to work with Veta. We have known each other for many years, I understand that she will make this story.
How did you start working with co-producer Katerina Mikhailova?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
We made the film “Moms,” for which we received the Golden Eagle. That's where we met. And then there was the film “Moscow in Love”, we also presented it in Cannes. Then we talked and thought that we could do something else together. At that time, Veta and I had already started thinking about the film “She Has a Different Name.” And when the script was ready, we turned to Katya and she was interested in the project, which was very pleasant.
We talked before the film “Vasilisa”, in which you played the Russian folk heroine Vasilisa Kozhina. But nevertheless, you are a world-class actress; just remember your role in the film “Wolverine. Immortal" in partnership with Hugh Jackman. Do you set the bar for yourself that you want to work alongside your Hollywood colleagues and be an international star?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
In a profession like ours, I don't think I can ask for anything less.
Many of your colleagues expect less of themselves.
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
But it's their choice. I am interested in learning new things, reaching new heights, and communicating in different languages.
How many languages do you know?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Sometimes it happens that I teach for a project. Because suddenly you can’t speak Greek right away, for example. And in Chinese too. And for films I taught them. Somewhere she spoke German, somewhere Polish. Fortunately, everything is fine with Polish. My great-grandmother is from Poland.
I know that you were born in a small town. But you’d never be able to tell, sophisticated, beautiful, in exquisite outfits. For some it's a dream. Was it for you too?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
I can’t say that this was my dream as such. It is clear that these moments associated with the profession are pleasant and interesting. Any girl and woman would be curious to feel themselves in such outfits that actresses demonstrate on the screen or on the pages of magazines. But this is rather a pleasant bonus to the profession. Because it wouldn’t be enough for me to just walk the red carpet, be published in magazines, and at the same time have nothing professional to my name to have the right to go on these carpets.
Many girls dream without realizing that this requires a lot of work.
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
The efforts are colossal. And you can’t just do it with dreams alone. Indeed, you need to plow, work, sometimes to the detriment of even personal relationships. Because this, I repeat, is a very dependent profession and sometimes very sacrificial. Often you have to make difficult choices.

You said that you did not go to the Cannes Film Festival this year because you were finishing filming two new projects. Can you tell us more about them?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
One film is called "On the Edge." It is based on real events - battles of Russian fencers. I’m proud of this film – also, by the way, a women’s story – about rivalry. It's very beautifully shot and the story is powerful. Confrontation between two women. One is my heroine Sophia the Great - already a fairly famous fencer, and a young athlete - she is played by Stasya Miloslavskaya. She had just entered the world of fencing and, as often happens, she had a very high opinion of herself.
When I found out about this project, my first reaction was this: again a sports drama. Moreover, a film is being filmed at the same time, where Victoria Isakova plays a scuba diving champion.
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
I’m also really looking forward to the film with Vika Isakova. We had men's sports dramas, now we have women's dramas. And in my filmography, I have acted very little with female partners in women’s films.
But you had such Hollywood male partners!
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Yes, wonderful. But again, what attracted me to the film “On the Edge” was the story. I like it when there are noticeable changes in a character. And you don’t always understand how it’s even possible to change from a calm person to one who is in a state close to insanity. When we started posting on Instagram about this film, there were a lot of comments on the topic: well, another sports drama; what kind of fashion is this? But I think that these are probably more ignorant people who do not visit cinemas very often. We make wonderful films about sports, especially in recent years. Why not do these stories if we do them well. And why don't people go and watch. After all, these are our heroines, Olympic champions, and the country should be proud of them.
Can I guess? For some reason, it seems to me that in the film “On the Edge” you work without an understudy. Have you studied fencing?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
We all studied fencing at the theater institute. However, when we came to the project with this “baggage of knowledge”, we were told: “Forget it!” Because at the institute there was beautiful fencing with a sword, but in the film we fencing with sabers. So it was impossible to do without doubles. It is impossible to learn fencing at such an intricate level in a short time so that it can then be reliably told in a film.
The second project is the series “Godunov” for the channel “Russia 1”? I recently saw the materials and didn’t recognize anyone there, but famous actors are playing. Then I heard them say that they put on so much makeup that we didn’t recognize each other on the set.
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Yes, it was like that.
Is your heroine also transformed in this way?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Transforms, of course. Firstly, I play a girl with red hair and brown eyes.
Have you dyed your hair red?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
I don't dye my hair. This is, of course, a wig. Our artists did their best, and the whole group was delighted with both their work and the work of all our artists.
Channel "Russia 1" aired the historical series "Sofia". There were such expensive and unusual costumes and items made especially for him that they later created a separate exhibition. Is everything the same in Godunov?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Yes. Because endless excursions, friends, come to us, just to look at these costumes, to touch the jewelry that is made on the basis of historical ones: something gilded, made of silver, semi-precious stones, pearls, turquoise and so on. This, of course, is all incredibly difficult to carry on yourself. You can stand in this, but you can walk around the whole day of filming - it all comes with a struggle (laughs).
The theme of jewelry runs through our interview. But is there a difference in knowing how to wear modern jewelry and antique jewelry? Was there a decoration that was most memorable?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
I spent a long time begging our costume girls: “Give me a crown, give me a kokoshnik, I want to take a photo.” And when I was already playing Maria Godunova at an older age, they gave me the crown. I was happy. I was ready to walk in it all day.
Is it allowed to post photos on Instagram during filming?
Svetlana Hodchenkova:
Of course, we don't do this without permission. And if we post it, it’s not during filming, when we get into character, but during breaks. "Liftoluki" in historical costumes. The queen “cut down the elevator hatch”* (laughs).

As they say, you don’t choose jewelry and stones, but they choose you. It was more like this for us. When the premieres began in my life, due to my age, perhaps because it was only the first or second year of theater institute, I was not very familiar with jewelry houses. And when we came to international festivals, no matter how many decorations were presented for the red carpet, for some reason we were always with Bulgari. So, hand in hand, our friendship has reached the point where I am now a brand ambassador. I like the fact that all products can be combined with both evening dresses and jeans. And it will always look very appropriate and modern. I know that the jewelers of this house know how to make jewelry even from semi-precious stones that you want to pass on to generations.
