Sigourney was born to influential NBC television producer Sylvester "Pat" Weaver and former British actress Elizabeth Inglis in New York City. As a child, the future actress was surrounded by numerous nannies and maids, and when it was time to study, Susan’s mother sent her to a private New York school. Since childhood, Weaver was much taller than her peers, so she often became the object of ridicule from the latter. To avoid this and gain the respect of the students, she turned herself into something of a school clown.

In 1962, her family moved briefly to San Francisco and later back east to Connecticut, where Sigourney attended the private all-girls high school Ethel Walker School. In 1963, inspired by one of the heroines in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Susan changed her name to Sigourney. Then she began acting in school plays.

After graduating from high school in 1967, Sigourney went to Israel for several months, where she lived on a kibbutz. There she became engaged to reporter Aaron Latham, but they broke up pretty soon.

In 1969, upon returning to the United States, Weaver studied English literature at Stanford and drama at Yale University.

Sigourney Weaver made her debut on the big screen in a small role opposite Woody Allen in the 1977 film Annie Hall. However, just two years later, thanks to the role of Lieutenant Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott's science-fiction action film Alien, released in 1979, the young actress became widely known. Scott's film and Weaver's character have become cult not only among fans of science fiction films, but also among film fans in general. Subsequently, Sigourney Weaver starred in three more Alien sequels, thereby becoming one of the genre-defining figures of sci-fi action films. Moreover, her performance as Ellen Ripley in the second series of Aliens earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Weaver was also nominated for the prestigious film award for her role as animal activist Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist and for her role as a bitchy boss in the late 1980s hit comedy Working Girl. Remarkably, Weaver was nominated for an Oscar for these roles in the same year.

In 2006, the actress released three films. Viewers saw the first of them in February 2006 at the Berlin Film Festival: in the film Snow Pie, Weaver played an autistic woman. She also played the role of an overbearing TV news producer in Jake Kasdan's comedy TV and a role in the biography of writer Truman Capote, Notorious.

In early December 2006, Weaver starred in the drama The Girl in the Park in New York. The film tells the story of a lonely woman who has long lost her little daughter and many years later meets a random girl similar to her (Kate Bosworth).
