Biography of Donatella Versace

Donatella was born in the Italian resort town of Reggio Calabria into a middle-income family. Her parents owned a store and a small tailor shop. My father traded, and my mother sewed clothes. The girl had two brothers and a sister who died in childhood from tetanus. The future designer got along well with her older brothers, despite the significant age difference of more than 10 years. The girl had a particularly close relationship with Gianni, who later became the founder of the famous fashion house. It was for his little sister that he sewed his very first dresses.

In the 70s, Gianni and his sister moved to Florence. My brother already set out to become the king of the fashion world. My sister didn’t make such serious plans - she just wanted to graduate well from the University of Florence, where she studied knitwear. But his brother’s business quickly gained momentum, and in 1978 Gianni persuaded the future successor of his business to become PR director of the Gianni Versace company. The girl arranged photo shoots and conducted advertising campaigns. She soon became one of the main shareholders of this company, gaining control over 20 percent of the shares. During the same period, the girl’s other brother, Santo, an economist by training, took up the financial issues of the Versace company.

Gianni relied heavily on his sister and listened to her advice. In her honor, the famous fashion designer even released Blonde eau de toilette. In addition, he gave Donatella the rights to products under the Versus brand.

1997 was tragic for the Versace family. A certain E. Cunanan in Miami (USA) shot and killed the legendary fashion designer. The killer evaded arrest and committed suicide a few days later. The motive for the crime remained unclear. There were different versions: some believed that Cunanan was crazy, others that he was carrying out the will of the Italian mafiosi. Subsequently, the sister of the murdered man did everything possible to ensure that the name Versace was mentioned as little as possible in the materials on the murder of her brother. The fashion designer also interfered with F. Monte, a private detective who personally investigated a high-profile crime and wrote a book about it. All this gave rise to the version that Donatella herself and her brother Santo, who allegedly wanted to take over the family business, were behind the murder of the famous fashion designer. However, the actions of the fashion designer are easily explained by the desire to protect the famous brand from bad publicity.

After Gianni’s death, 50 percent of the company’s shares went to his favorite Allegra, Donatella’s daughter, 20 percent to his sister, and the remaining 30 percent to his brother Santo.

A few months after the tragedy, Donatella entered the market with her first clothing line, but there was little success. Then things got much better. The successor of the great Gianni was greatly helped by her previously acquired skills as a PR agent. She had an original idea to attract various celebrities to advertise her collections and participate in shows. This tactic fully justified itself: very soon the famous brand was again at the top.

Donatella was well aware that she would never be able to repeat her brother’s unsurpassed style in everything. But she did not strive for this, adding her own unique features to the collections. The designer brought femininity and practicality to Versace's outfits, but at the same time the signature luxury and sensuality did not go away.

In the early 2000s, fashion designer Donatella Versace invested large sums in luxury hotels and resorts. Thus, the now well-known Palazzo Versace brand was created.
