Biography of Gerard Butler

Looking for a better life

Gerard was born in Scotland on November 13, 1969, the third child in a family of very devout Catholics. The youngest son was a few months old, and his father, Edward Butler, tore the family from their home in Glasgow and moved them to Montreal. He thought it would be easier to start a business in Canada. But this search for happiness did not lead to anything good. The family fell apart: Edward remained in Montreal, and Margaret with Brown, Lynn and two-year-old Gerard returned to their homeland. They settled in Paisley.

Young Gerard had two great passions - karate and going to the cinema. He also liked the theater. He managed to convince his mother and auditioned for the Scottish Youth Theater. The first roles inspired the twelve-year-old artist. But my mother did not consider acting a serious profession. In order not to upset her, Gerard became a law student - it turned out to be easy, because he studied almost exclusively with excellent marks. When college at Glasgow University was behind him, Butler nevertheless made an attempt to become an actor and left for Los Angeles. A year and a half passed in vain - the screen tests were unsuccessful.

Period of "decay"

Having buried his father in Canada (he died of cancer), the disappointed Gerard found himself back in his homeland. He managed to get a job at a prestigious Edinburgh company, but the work did not bring satisfaction to the guy.

A period of continuous drunkenness and self-destruction began. Neither the support of his best friend Alan Stewart nor a performance with a rock band organized by a friend helped. The actor remembers those days with horror - he stood on the edge so many times - in the full sense of the word. They pulled him out from under the wheels of a car, took him off the roof of a skyscraper, but he didn’t stop. Now he drank every day with everyone he met. The internship was ending, but yesterday’s promising employee was fired from work for absenteeism and drunkenness.

Don't change your dream

Gerard was able to pull himself together and went to London to try to get a job in the theater - he did not give up his dream of acting. What did he do to earn money between auditions? He was a waiter, demonstrated toys, and then managed to get a job as a casting assistant at the Marmaid Theater. He convinced one of the directors to give him a couple of minutes; they liked his performance. So Butler fulfilled his dream and became an artist.

His career as a film actor began in 1997 - he was already under 30. The first film in which the Scot took part was the melodrama “Her Majesty Mrs. Brown”. The title role starred Judi Dench, who received a Golden Globe for this work.

Star of the first magnitude

Several episodes in blockbusters and TV series in the late 1990s, and finally the title role in Dracula 2000, revealed this actor to viewers and directors. There was even talk that Butler might replace Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007. But these plans did not come true: Brosnan had no plans to leave the franchise yet.

Butler finally has a lot of work to do. The second film in the Lara Croft duology, “The Phantom of the Opera,” and later “300,” “Rock and Rolla” and other projects made the Scot famous.
