Where do periods go during pregnancy? Can you have periods during pregnancy? Ectopic pregnancy and its symptoms

Even the most experienced women who monitor their health can skip pregnancy and come to see a specialist with the baby’s first movements. This is due to menstruation in early pregnancy. They are discharge that looks very similar to the usual critical days, but their reasons are completely different.

Early registration of a pregnant woman is very important. Knowing about her situation, the woman does not take medications and tries to eat well and properly.

and protects himself more. If there are serious developmental defects, then at the very first screening ultrasound diagnosis many defects can be seen and a decision can be made to continue or terminate the pregnancy.

When do you get your period during pregnancy?

This is very often observed in girls with light and irregular menstruation. Pregnancy is not always a planned event, and not everyone runs to the pharmacy for a test if the delay is a day or two.

The causes of such discharge during pregnancy are:

The cervix is very vulnerable during pregnancy

. This is especially true in cases with ectopia and erosion. Even taking smears or having sexual intercourse can cause small amounts of blood to be discharged during pregnancy.

What are periods?

Menstruation is the shedding of the upper layer of the endometrium, which lines the walls of the uterus. It serves as a kind of nutritional “cushion” for the attachment of a fertilized egg. If the egg does not implant, the endometrium comes out in the form of mucus and blood.

When the endometrium is detached, menstruation begins

Usually, from the moment the embryo is conceived, a woman’s hormonal background begins to change, and the endometrium grows under the influence of progesterone.

Rejection of the endometrium when the egg is attached indicates some disturbances in the functioning of the body. Such discharge during pregnancy is not menstruation.

How long can periods last during pregnancy?

A missed period is the most common sign of pregnancy

. But there are exceptions to the rule when menstruation does not stop. Most gynecologists do not consider menstruation in the first month after conception a sign of danger or a pathology. The reasons lie specifically in the fertilization of the egg and the subsequent implantation of the woman’s fertilized egg.

It also happens that in the early stages, heavy periods do not stop throughout the entire first trimester. Here you cannot do without an examination by a specialist. First, it is necessary to eliminate the threat of miscarriage and establish the reason why the woman’s body does not respond to conception.

Experts identify several reasons for this phenomenon:

Many women are interested in how many months menstruation can last during pregnancy and until what period is this considered normal. Doctors say that this phenomenon can last no more than 4 months. But even if when carrying a baby

There are no pathologies, then monthly bleeding should still alert the doctor and the expectant mother.

How can you tell the difference between spotting and menstruation?

If there are any doubts about the beginning and normal course of pregnancy, it is worth knowing how to distinguish menstruation when carrying a baby from normal ones

.

Determination of hormones in blood and urine

It is very important to conduct a urine pregnancy test by purchasing one from a pharmacy. This method is the safest and most accessible. It can be done at home without any problems. But if the result is negative, this does not mean that you are not pregnant. It is not always informative in the early stages

. For a more accurate result, it is worth taking a blood test to measure the level of human chorionic gonadotropin. You can find out the correct result already on the 10th day after conception. If it is positive, then conception has occurred, but if it is negative, then no.

If a girl monitors her basal temperature, she will also be able to determine whether it is menstruation or discharge during pregnancy

. Direct evidence that fertilization has occurred is a temperature in the rectum above 37 degrees.

How you feel

For many women, pregnancy is accompanied by symptoms such as:

These symptoms will persist even with abnormal discharge during pregnancy.

By the nature of the discharge

In most situations, discharge that can be confused with menstruation during pregnancy is unusual. It is for this reason that they arouse suspicion and doubt in a woman. But based on reviews, it can be judged that if normally monthly discharge was scanty, then women do not notice the difference

. You need to pay attention to the following factors:

  1. If spotting appears after a delay.
  2. If they are clotted and unusually abundant.
  3. If they started earlier than expected.
  4. Lasts only 1 or 2 days.
  5. Minor.

Algorithm of actions when in doubt

If a woman does not rule out that she may be pregnant, but she has discharge, then she immediately needs to visit a specialist. Under no circumstances should you take any medications or use traditional methods in order to intensify your periods and cause termination of pregnancy, as a continuation of the miscarriage that has begun.

It is better not to try to stop the bleeding with medications and herbs. This will not stop the discharge, but it may have a negative effect on the health of the fetus and the expectant mother. The most correct algorithm for female actions is:

To the question that interests all women about whether there can be menstruation during the period of bearing a baby, experts give a unequivocal answer that these two concepts are absolutely opposite to each other. Even minor bleeding during pregnancy is a pathology that requires medical supervision and, possibly, emergency treatment.

It is for this reason that if you have any doubts about your condition, you should immediately visit a specialist. And this needs to be done as quickly as possible. After all, if a woman delays visiting the clinic, this can lead to disastrous events.

Attention, TODAY only!

First of all, I want women to confirm to themselves that menstruation during pregnancy

, in the literal sense of the word,
are not possible by definition
.
Yes, there are situations when bleeding during pregnancy occurs around the time when a woman should have started her period, however, firstly, most often their character is very different from normal menstruation, which suggests something is wrong, and secondly, when In any case, this is a deviation from the norm, which means it requires consultation with a doctor. The situation is complicated by the fact that menstruation during early pregnancy misinforms the woman, which is why she may not even be aware of her pregnancy.
Especially if menstruation during pregnancy and a negative test are combined. That is why from time to time situations arise when women do not know about their interesting situation until they are 3-4 months old. But situations are not uncommon when early diagnosis of pregnancy is a decisive factor in its preservation. To understand why menstruation in the usual interpretation and pregnancy are not compatible, it is enough to recall the basic knowledge of anatomy that we were all given at school, but most women have already forgotten it, as it seems to them, as unnecessary.

The uterus consists of three layers: an outer mucous layer, a middle layer consisting of smooth muscle, and an inner mucous layer. Each of these layers performs its own function. For example, the myometrium, a muscle layer, protects the fetus from external influences, and also actively participates in the birth process, pushing the baby out with its contractions.

The most mobile and changeable layer of the uterus is called the endometrium. It increases during the first half of the cycle. The purpose of thickening the endometrium is to maintain pregnancy until the formation of the placenta, if one occurs. Implantation of the fertilized egg occurs in the mucous membrane.

Menstruation is the complete rejection of the endometrium if pregnancy does not occur. Mucus, along with blood from damaged blood vessels, leaves the body, and the process repeats from the very beginning. The simplest logical calculations will lead us to the natural conclusion that complete rejection of the endometrium during pregnancy will lead to miscarriage, since it will also capture the newly implanted fertilized egg.

So it turns out that the questions “Do you have periods during pregnancy?” and “How are periods during pregnancy?” They simply have no meaning, since menstruation is impossible during pregnancy. It is much more logical to talk about bleeding during pregnancy, and this is in most cases an alarming signal.

Are periods always dangerous during pregnancy?

In most cases, but fortunately not always. Yes, periods during early pregnancy are always a deviation from the norm, but they do not always threaten the health of the mother and child; in some cases, the situation is absolutely safe. The simplest and safest reason for bleeding for a period of several weeks is the period of implantation of the fertilized egg.

. This process may be accompanied by damage to blood vessels, and hence spotting from the vagina. However, implantation can take place without any symptoms such as bleeding.

Scanty periods during pregnancy can also occur in a number of other cases that do not harm the body. For example, if the fertilized egg did not have time to implant

into the mucous layer before the onset of menstruation. This process takes 7 to 15 days, so delays are possible, although extremely rare. There are no hormonal changes at this stage yet, which means there is no cancellation of menstrual bleeding. And the delay occurs only for the next cycle. A month later than it should be. In rare cases, two eggs mature in different ovaries at the same time or almost simultaneously. If one of them is fertilized, and the second is rejected, then menstruation occurs during pregnancy.

Another reason why menstruation is possible during pregnancy: various hormonal imbalances

. For example, a lack of progesterone or an excess of androgens, male hormones. Both of them, up to a certain point, do not threaten pregnancy if they do not cross specific boundaries. In more complex cases, the consequences may be more serious. Fortunately, both are easily corrected by taking hormonal medications, but require timely consultation with a doctor. It is dangerous to “prescribe” these drugs to yourself.

Norms

What are periods like during early pregnancy? Definitely, there should be no menstruation after confirmation of pregnancy. The only exception is the coincidence in the dates of completion of the cycle and the beginning of ovulation, the body’s readiness to conceive. But after fertilization of the egg, at least 2 weeks will pass for the woman to speculate about her new condition.

To be sure, at such an early stage, an hCG test is taken or a test is performed. Also, those mothers who scrupulously monitor all changes can determine the onset of pregnancy using the basal temperature chart. But after confirmation of conception, menstruation is a signal of flow disturbances.

In the first 3-4 weeks, scanty bleeding may be observed; this is not the usual menstruation. In the normal course of events, this indicates the attachment of the formed amniotic egg to the walls of the uterus. It is difficult to confuse this condition with regular menstruation. There should be no nagging pain or other usual sensations observed during the cycle. Spotting does not appear for more than 2 days.

Pathologies that cause menstruation during pregnancy

Depending on what kind of menstruation occurs during pregnancy, a variety of diagnoses can be made, and they are not always insignificant. In the early stages, bleeding most often indicates detachment of the fertilized egg, and, as a result, the threat of miscarriage

.

If the detachment is small, then the body will most likely cope with the situation on its own by increasing the production of progesterone to maintain pregnancy. In this case, the discharge will be scanty, most likely spotting. There may be no other symptoms. In more complex and dangerous cases, painful, heavy periods may occur during pregnancy. Such symptoms should be a reason to immediately consult a doctor

, as well as adherence to
bed rest
and complete rest. Compliance or non-compliance with the last rule can be decisive in the matter of saving the pregnancy, so it should not be neglected.

Unfortunately, many women treat this recommendation condescendingly, considering light fussing around the house an analogue of bed rest: and really, how can you lie in bed if your husband comes home from work hungry in the evening? In fact, even a light jog with a broom can become a critical load in the event of a threatened miscarriage. That is why they try to hospitalize patients with this diagnosis, which ensures that women comply with bed rest.

Detachment of the ovum can be caused by a variety of reasons. For example, neoplasms on the myometrium, the muscular layer of the uterus, or a focus of endometriosis, if attachment occurs precisely in the affected area. This causes a lack of oxygen in the fetus and death.

Genetic disorders

or significant pathological changes in the fetus as a result of intrauterine diseases, most often infectious, can also cause a miscarriage. In this case, it will most likely not be possible to save the pregnancy; all that remains is to examine the rejected fetus and try to avoid similar situations in the future.

Another very deplorable diagnosis, due to which some women have periods during pregnancy, is an ectopic pregnancy.

. In this case, implantation of the fertilized egg occurs not in the uterus, but in the fallopian tube. As the embryo grows, it begins to run out of space, and as a result, the tube may rupture, which threatens the woman’s life, as internal bleeding occurs. Even if death can be avoided, which is very likely, the woman’s reproductive functions will be truncated, since the ruptured fallopian tube cannot be restored.

If a woman and her gynecologist suspect an ectopic pregnancy, the patient is immediately sent for an ultrasound examination to clarify the diagnosis, and if it is confirmed, then urgent surgical intervention is necessary. Previously, we were talking about abdominal surgery, but now ectopic pregnancy is removed by laparoscopy. This procedure involves three small punctures, through one of which a video camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity, through the rest - manipulators, with their help the fertilized egg is removed.

Laparoscopy is a much more gentle procedure than abdominal surgery. The rehabilitation period after this procedure is approximately 2 times less. Already on the second day, the woman will be able to stand up independently. The time of forced abstinence from food is also reduced. And purely aesthetically, three small, almost imperceptible scars from laparoscopy are much better than an incision across the entire abdomen.

Late periods

Normally, a woman should not have any bleeding after the second month of pregnancy. If your period does come, you need to see a doctor immediately .

Hormonal imbalance

This is one of the most common problems that make it difficult to bear a baby. Progesterone deficiency provokes spotting without pain. Traces appear on a woman's underwear when she moves. To correct the condition, hormonal medications are prescribed.

I recommend reading: First periods after childbirth

Miscarriage

Sudden onset of heavy bleeding may be caused by spontaneous abortion. The expectant mother feels cramping pain in the lower abdomen, weakness, and dizziness. The fetus can be saved only with immediate medical intervention.

Frozen fruit

Pregnancy may stop developing due to several reasons:

  • hormonal disorders;
  • stress experienced by the expectant mother;
  • viral infections suffered by the woman;
  • genetic abnormalities;
  • fetal malformations.

Most often, pregnancy stops between 16 and 19 weeks. Therefore, at this time a woman should be especially attentive to her condition.

Placental abruption

This problem can occur at any stage of pregnancy. Bleeding can start from a woman’s fall, a blow to the abdomen, pathologies of internal organs, the vascular system, a blood clotting disorder, or stressful situations. During detachment, the pregnant woman experiences nagging pain in the lower abdomen, and uterine tone increases. Small area lesions can be treated. When a large area is detached, severe bleeding begins and there is a threat of losing the fetus.

If at 2-9 months the expectant mother has spotting, do not think that it is menstruation. You need to go to the doctor immediately. Only then can we hope that we will be able to maintain the pregnancy.

Bloody discharge can cause ectopic pregnancy, an infectious process affecting the cervix. The special shape of the organ (resembling a saddle), endometriosis also often causes a woman to worry due to the appearance of red marks. Therefore, in case of anomalies, pregnancy takes place under the close supervision of an obstetrician-gynecologist.

What are the dangers of menstruation during pregnancy?

It is not difficult to guess that menstruation itself during pregnancy (with a positive test) does not pose a danger, except in cases where it is a case of really heavy bleeding that threatens serious blood loss. In most cases, the causes of menstruation during pregnancy are dangerous.

As in most other cases, a woman will not be able to make a diagnosis on her own, without consulting a gynecologist. Although he tries very often: he consults with friends, looks through thematic forums, and wastes time. Unfortunately, in some cases this ends disastrously for the woman’s pregnancy and health.

That is why both pregnant women and women who have not yet encountered pregnancy need to be attentive to their body. Any changes in the menstrual cycle, the nature of menstruation, consistency, abundance, and so on, may be a cause for concern. It makes sense to urgently seek consultation to clarify the diagnosis.

I would like to repeat once again: it doesn’t matter why you have periods during pregnancy, in any case it is necessary to get examined by a doctor as early as possible. The sooner a diagnosis is made and treatment is started, the greater the chance of maintaining the pregnancy.

And, even if the doctor does not find any cause for concern, he will at least reassure the pregnant woman. She will know for sure that nothing bad is happening to her, and all changes are absolutely safe. But the expectant mother does not need unnecessary worries and stress.

Pregnancy and menstruation are incompatible concepts. To understand this well, you need to study the basics of human anatomy.

The uterus has three layers - outer, middle and inner mucosa. The endometrium is the most mobile layer of the uterus, and as soon as a new life is born, it thickens so that it is not interrupted.

If pregnancy does not occur, the endometrium is detached and menstruation begins. This is why menstruation is impossible during pregnancy. Do periods in early pregnancy always warn of danger?

Prevention

In order for a woman to avoid the appearance of spotting during pregnancy, she should be as attentive as possible to her body. It is advisable to plan your pregnancy in advance and prepare for this period: take a complex of vitamins, undergo a full examination for genital tract infections, and be treated for chronic diseases. If a woman is at risk for complications or due to age, then it is necessary to fully follow the doctor’s recommendations and undergo a timely ultrasound scan, as well as undergo routine tests.

In cases of hormonal imbalance, a woman should first equalize her hormone levels and only then plan a pregnancy. If you have existing infections and inflammations, you need to undergo treatment in advance, since many drugs have many contraindications. This is especially true when taking antibiotics.

It is also recommended to take a vaginal microflora test. Often, a failure in the ratio of bacteria leads to disruption of the mucous membrane: erosion may occur. So the presence of a large amount of ureaplasma may indicate the cause of poor formation of the endometrium, which in the future will affect the quality of attachment of the fertilized egg.

For some expectant mothers, the gynecologist may recommend that they refrain from sexual intercourse to avoid uterine bleeding. Women suffering from arterial hypertension will be prescribed rest and a complex of vitamins. In some cases, even maintenance medications.

Causes of menstrual bleeding

Indeed, during early pregnancy, periods may indicate danger, but not always. Of course, if menstruation appears at the beginning of pregnancy, this is a kind of pathology, but it may not pose a threat.

Be sure to consult a doctor

Scanty periods during pregnancy do not pose a threat if...

  1. The fertilized egg does not yet have time to attach to the walls of the uterus before the onset of menstrual bleeding in the mucous layer. Then, it is likely that menstruation can occur in early pregnancy. This stage does not involve hormonal changes in the body, so menstruation can continue.
  2. Two eggs matured in different ovaries at once, one of which was fertilized. Then the second one is rejected and can cause menstruation in the early stages of pregnancy.
  3. Hormonal balance is disrupted. For example, a woman has a predominance of androgens - male hormones, or an insufficient level of progesterone. Both cases do not pose a threat to the unborn child. These problems can be easily corrected with the help of hormonal drugs; the main thing is to consult a specialist.

Pathologies that can cause menstruation at the beginning of pregnancy.

  1. Menstrual bleeding, which is observed at the beginning of pregnancy, may indicate detachment of the ovum, which leads to miscarriage. The body can solve this problem itself if the detachment is small. Then progesterone begins to be actively produced, and the discharge has a scanty, spotting character. If the case is more serious, pain and heavy bleeding are observed.
  2. It happens that during early pregnancy, minor periods occur, which appear due to mechanical damage to the vagina and cervix. For example, after a doctor’s examination and taking swabs, a girl may develop a small amount of blood.
  3. Minor bleeding may occur during sexual intercourse. This should not be a cause for concern, but to be completely sure it is necessary to undergo an ultrasound scan and also monitor the development of the embryo.
  4. Heavy periods during pregnancy can be observed due to ectopic development of the fetus. In this case, the fertilized egg attaches to the fallopian tube, and as soon as the fetus begins to grow, it becomes crowded, so the tube may rupture. This leads to internal bleeding, which is life-threatening. In almost all cases, the woman’s life can be saved, but her reproductive system may be truncated, because the fallopian tube cannot be restored.
  5. Menstruation during early pregnancy can occur if there are any genetic disorders or pathological conditions of the fetus caused by intrauterine diseases. It is almost impossible to save the child in such cases.

Damage to the uterus

Should I call the loop myself?

Lack of menstrual bleeding, breast swelling, a nervous state and early toxicosis may indicate the development of a new life inside you, sometimes not entirely desired. Then many begin to wonder: “How to provoke menstruation?”

As a rule, few people go to the doctor, because everyone is trying to find ways on the Internet using various herbs and drugs. Every woman understands that if menstrual bleeding begins, the pregnancy will stop, so they try by any means possible to purchase the necessary mixture or pills at the pharmacy.

This is a fundamentally wrong decision. First of all, you should consult a specialist who will tell you the most effective and safe method for you. For example, some people will benefit from an injection that will trigger menstruation. As a rule, oxytocin is used for this purpose, a medication that causes rapid contractions of the uterus.

No less effective drugs that can quickly induce menstruation are Pulsatilla, Postinor, Norkolut. It is also possible to induce menstruation with Duphaston or Utrozhestan.

Don't call yourself - it's dangerous

All of the above drugs are very dangerous for a woman’s health, because they radically change hormonal levels and can lead to subsequent infertility. That is why, before taking any medications, visit a doctor.

How to prepare yourself?

The key to the health of the unborn child is not only the physiology of the mother, but also her emotional state. All experts recommend thinking through some aspects in advance. If you have a feeling of doubt or discomfort, delay conception.

As sociological statistics show, antenatal depression is known to about 10% of pregnant women. Having thoroughly studied all the early signs of pregnancy before the start of a missed period, they are often unprepared for what awaits them, because they will no longer be able to control their body and life.

State of depression

The state of depression and despondency is transmitted to the growing fetus. To avoid negative consequences, you need to psychologically prepare yourself for this event.

Prenatal depression can be caused by:

  1. High expectations. Some girls are sure that preparing for bearing a baby implies a kind of plan according to which everything goes. The only thing they will need is to monitor all aspects from the moment of conception to the day of birth.
  2. Unforeseen changes in the process of bearing a child can provoke high anxiety, stress or a nervous breakdown. It is necessary to accept in advance that it is impossible to control all aspects of life, so all situations that arise should be accepted calmly.
  3. Social interest. Not every girl is ready for the fact that her position will cause increased attention from people around her. Bad advice and intimate questions are sometimes asked not only by close people, but also by colleagues and acquaintances.
  4. As soon as the earliest signs of pregnancy appear even before your period is missed, you must immediately prepare yourself for the fact that you may have to learn to give the correct rebuff if the recommendations of strangers are inappropriate.
  5. Family problems. The fairy tale that a child is able to save a family is known to this day. Sometimes boundless faith in it leads to unjustified hopes. That is why, at the first signs of early pregnancy, even before your period, you need to solve all the problems with your partner in order to know for sure whether you need this child, whether it will be desired.

Let's look at a few reviews from women who had their periods at the beginning of pregnancy.

Oddly enough, uterine bleeding, especially in the first trimester, is observed quite often, and the ensuing pregnancy turns out to be a real surprise for a woman. You can distinguish normal menstruation from false menstruation by a number of characteristic signs indicating the birth of a new life.

Can pregnancy occur during menstruation with clots?

Menstruation started without delay, which means conception is impossible? Or not? Many girls are interested in the question of whether menstruation can occur during early pregnancy? Any knowledgeable specialist can answer that this can and does happen quite often. Why is this happening? Let's figure it out.

Can you really get your period during early pregnancy?

There are several reasons why a woman experiences monthly bleeding after conception. In medical practice, this phenomenon is called “Washing of the fetus.” Let's consider in what cases the expectant mother may experience bleeding after fertilization.

Attachment of the embryo to the uterus

Approximately 7-10 days after the meeting of the sperm and egg, a girl may experience so-called implantation bleeding. In this case, the fertilized egg passes through the fallopian tube and attaches to the wall of the reproductive organ. This is necessary for the cell to grow together with the blood vessels from which the fetus will be nourished in the future.

The amount of blood released during implantation bleeding is usually minimal.

Hormonal disorders

Hormonal imbalances are another reason that can raise a girl’s question about whether she can have periods during early pregnancy? The fact is that progesterone deficiency often provokes minor spotting in the first stages after conception. By the way, the secretion is most often noted precisely on those days on which menstruation was supposed to occur according to the calendar. To normalize the condition and preserve the fetus, the gynecologist prescribes drugs that improve hormonal levels.

Vaginal injuries

With various injuries to the vagina, bleeding similar to menstruation is a completely natural phenomenon. Such symptoms may occur after sexual intercourse or a gynecological examination.

In this case, the doctor can quite reasonably put a ban on intimate relations. Bloody or brown spots on underwear may not appear immediately after sexual intercourse, but after several hours.

Two eggs in one cycle

In women taking drugs that stimulate ovulation, not one, but two eggs may be released from the ovary in one cycle. By the way, this often happens without taking any medications. If the first egg was fertilized and attached to the wall of the uterus, then the second (unfertilized) comes out naturally, that is, with menstruation.

Pregnancy occurring during menstruation

Contrary to the opinion of many women that fertilization is impossible during menstruation, conceiving a child during menstruation is quite possible. This happens infrequently, but such cases are regularly recorded in medical practice.

This happens when there is a hormonal imbalance, if the release of an egg from the ovary occurs immediately before monthly bleeding.

Are periods during pregnancy different from normal periods?

Reviews from women and doctors indicate that the symptoms really differ. This manifests itself in the following:

  • Bleeding occurs earlier than expected.
  • The discharge is scanty.
  • The color is lighter or, conversely, bright scarlet.
  • The duration of bleeding is less than usual.

Women whose cycles are irregular should first of all ask themselves: Do they have periods in the early stages during pregnancy? This will help to exclude unwanted conception and register with a doctor in a timely manner.

When is menstruation considered dangerous?

Washing the fetus is not always normal. Sometimes starting bleeding indicates quite serious problems. Let's look at them below.

Miscarriage

Bloody discharge with clots often indicates a threat of miscarriage. In this case, the girl may have a stomach ache in the lower part, the discharge may be scanty or, conversely, abundant.

With timely consultation with a specialist, miscarriage can often be prevented. The patient usually requires treatment with hormonal drugs.

If a miscarriage does occur, you should not delay visiting the doctor. In the absence of the necessary treatment, the consequences for a woman can be very negative, including the development of infertility.

Ectopic attachment of a fertilized egg

Due to various provoking factors, it happens that the fertilized egg is not attached to the wall of the uterus, but, for example, in the fallopian tube. This phenomenon is called an ectopic pregnancy, that is, it develops outside the uterus. It should be noted that the test may show two stripes.

Signs of an ectopic pregnancy in the early stages are not much different from the symptoms after a normal conception:

  • The woman feels nauseous.
  • Weakness, malaise, and dizziness appear.
  • Breasts fill up.
  • Pulls in the lower abdomen.
  • Appetite decreases.
  • The test shows two lines.

Despite this, this phenomenon is considered pathological and poses a serious threat to the patient’s life. If it is not interrupted in a timely manner, rupture of the fallopian tube and internal bleeding may occur.

You can read more about ectopic pregnancy in this article.

Hydatidiform mole

This concept refers to the abnormal development of the fertilized egg. In this case, only the outer layer of embryonic cells divides and exclusively male chromosomes develop. Menstruation during hydatidiform mole may be practically no different in nature from normal menstruation. In the early stages of pathology, a woman often experiences toxicosis, more pronounced than during normal pregnancy.

Symptoms of pregnancy while having menstruation

After conception, multiple processes are launched in the female body, preparing it for bearing a fetus. First of all, the hormonal background changes, and with it the functions of many organ systems. Until the 2nd trimester, pregnancy practically does not appear outwardly, so you need to take a closer look at yourself.

In the early stages

If there is a suspicion that conception has occurred, but menstruation has arrived on time, then you should pay attention to the nature of the discharge itself. First of all, they become scarce. In addition to the reduction in blood volume, its color usually changes: from light red and pink to brown and brown. Such “menstruation” can occur repeatedly and require a visit to the gynecologist to confirm or rule out pregnancy.

Another reliable sign of imminent motherhood is a change in the condition of the mammary glands. The breasts increase in size and become quite painful. Such signs are characteristic of premenstrual syndrome, but with the onset of menstruation they disappear. If pregnancy occurs, the breasts remain swollen, and the nipples and areolas become darker due to increased pigmentation.

At a later date

As a rule, spotting at the beginning of pregnancy does not pose a threat to it and stops by the second trimester. However, regular bleeding can occur throughout the entire pregnancy, and more pronounced signs will help to reliably determine its presence:

  • In the third or fourth month, drops of cloudy whitish liquid - colostrum
    . In this way, the mammary glands prepare for the lactation period after childbirth.
  • There is a frequent urge to urinate
    , and the volume of urine is insignificant. This is explained by the increase in the size of the uterus: it begins to put pressure on the nearby bladder, and it has to be emptied more often.
  • The growth of the uterus becomes obvious
    : the abdomen begins to protrude forward, the first movements of the fetus are felt. Body weight generally increases, which is especially noticeable in thin women who are watching their figure (at the same time, diets and sports do not produce results - the weight is steadily growing).
  • A pregnant woman's taste preferences change
    , sometimes taking quite bizarre forms. There is a tendency towards foods that were not previously on the list of favorites, and pica is often observed. This term refers to the uncontrollable desire to eat obviously inedible things, for example, chalk (the body thus replenishes calcium reserves).
  • A common sign of pregnancy is fatigue along with irritability
    . Energy is spent by the body of the expectant mother to maintain the vital functions of the fetus, and unstable hormonal levels contribute to sudden changes in mood.
  • During pregnancy, the production of melanocyte-stimulating hormone melanotropin significantly increases and, accordingly, increased skin pigmentation
    . Already in the third month, a vertical dark line appears in the center of the abdomen, and spots (chloasma) may appear on the face. After childbirth, pigmentation quickly disappears and the skin returns to normal.
  • Due to weight gain, hereditary factors and changes in hormonal levels, the skin undergoes another change: stretch marks
    .
  • An increase in the concentration of estrogen in the blood can manifest itself in the form of erythema (redness of the skin of the palms) or the formation of spider veins
    .
  • Multiple acne on the face
    is likely , since the sebaceous glands begin to work more actively when hormonal levels change.

The above signs clearly indicate pregnancy, and they are noticeable not only to the woman herself, but also to those around her. Regular uterine bleeding in this case is not normal menstruation at all, but a threat of miscarriage and a reason to urgently consult a doctor. After a diagnostic examination, a specialist will determine the cause and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Hematoma

Bleeding caused by a hematoma can begin at any stage of pregnancy: before 16 weeks it is retrochorial hematoma (chorionic detachment), after 16 weeks it is placental. At later stages, such damage causes profuse bleeding and is pathological.

Bleeding due to retrochorial hematoma

The following factors can cause them:

  • Hormonal disorders (here the discharge may be scanty and brown);
  • Infectious or inflammatory processes of the genitourinary system;
  • Multiple pregnancy;
  • Various injuries;
  • Defects in fetal development;
  • Blood clotting disorders;

Menstruation during pregnancy: reasons

Menstruation and pregnancy are mutually exclusive concepts, however, the presence of scanty monthly discharge can be considered normal if the woman feels well.

  • Conceiving at the very end of the cycle may not affect the overall hormonal background and the uterus ready for menstruation. Most often, spontaneous pregnancy
    , which the woman is not even aware of, but if the fertilized egg manages to gain a foothold, the pregnancy continues.
  • When an embryo implants into the uterine wall, implantation bleeding
    . A small amount of blood is released, which is mistakenly taken for the beginning of the next menstruation.
  • A trivial error in calculations
    , when pregnancy occurs after menstruation, but the woman is sure that conception occurred earlier.
  • A rather rare, but quite probable situation with two mature eggs
    : one of them is fertilized and fixed in the uterus, and the other causes menstruation.
  • Intense sexual intercourse
    may damage the cervix and, consequently, cause slight bleeding.

In the situations described, menstrual bleeding stops in the first trimester and pregnancy proceeds normally until childbirth. However, in exceptional cases, the fetus develops under the same hormonal background: the phases of estrogenic and gestagenic activity alternate monthly, and menstruation occurs. This condition of the body requires medical correction with hormonal drugs to reduce the likelihood of miscarriage.

First trimester

Blood on panties during pregnancy most often occurs in the first trimester. Sometimes a woman may not even be aware of her situation, mistaking bleeding for menstruation. Usually in the early stages this is not a serious pathology and does not require seeing a doctor.

Bloody discharge in the early stages is often harmless

But there are also serious violations. Women who planned a pregnancy in advance should monitor their health. Gynecologists recognize the fourth and fifth, eighth and ninth, twelfth and thirteenth weeks as the most dangerous.

Here are some situations in which this is possible:

  • Implantation bleeding. A few scarlet drops may be a consequence of the implantation of a fertilized egg into the wall of the uterus. Thin capillaries of the endometrium burst when the fertilized egg attaches. No more than 30% of women experience this;
  • Late ovulation and conception at the end of the cycle. The egg has to be implanted when the hormonal background is already changing, that is, right before the endometrium is rejected. Menstruation occurs when fertilization is complete;
  • Ectopic pregnancy: the egg gets stuck in the fallopian tube and does not reach the walls of the uterus;
  • The formation of two fertilized eggs and the rejection of one of them;
  • Bubble drift. Rare pathology of chorion development (significant increase and growth of villi);
  • Frozen pregnancy. The fertilized egg attaches to the affected area of the uterus (fibroids, endometriosis) and dies due to lack of oxygen and nutrients;
  • Anomaly in the development of the fertilized egg: incorrect structure, empty fertilized egg;
  • Hormonal instability. Insufficient estrogen levels can cause bleeding on the days of your expected period. This increases the risk of miscarriage. Most often, this problem affects women who become pregnant on progesterone-containing drugs.

The least dangerous discharges include those that have scant volume and are brown in color. This is possible due to mechanical damage to the mucous membrane: gynecological examination, scraping, inaccurate sexual intercourse or erosion.

Particular attention should be paid to bloody discharge that began after an abdominal injury or was accompanied by malaise: nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness.

Those that are combined with nagging or acute pain in the lower abdomen are also unsafe. Discharge with blood clots should also alert a woman.

Menstruation and pregnancy (video)

Heavy and painful bleeding poses a real threat to the health of the fetus and the pregnant woman herself. In this case, spontaneous abortion is an almost inevitable outcome of events. In addition, menstruation can continue against the background of an ectopic pregnancy, so if certain suspicions arise, it is unacceptable to delay a visit to the gynecologist. The doctor will tell you in detail whether a pregnancy can be carried to term during menstruation and what symptoms really pose a danger to the unborn baby.
